Several hundred Animation Guild members and their supporters rallied today in Burbank, loudly demanding a fair contract from the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers.
Carrying signs that say “New deal 4 animation” and “Cartoons are serious business,” the rallygoers chanted, “New contract, new deal,” and “Tag United will never be defeated.” Labor and management last met at the bargaining table on March 2, and will resume talks on Tuesday.
Steve Kaplan, business rep of The Animation Guild, IATSE Local 839, who was supposed to speak at today’s rally, did ot attend because he’s recovering from Covid-19.
Speakers at today’s rally included Michael Miller, IATSE’s 4th international vice president, and Jeanette Moreno King, the guild’s president.
The guild’s current contact had originally been set to expire last July 29, but has been extended several times to allow the on-again, off-again bargaining to continue.

What more can be said about Chuck Norris? The ubiquitous ’80s B star, he made a series of mostly bland actioners that would only come alive if the director brought a little something different to the table, because they certainly weren’t going to work with an actor who has the charisma of a constipated two-by-four. This brings us to Silent Rage (1982), a hybrid sci-fi/horror/kung fu effort that is quite effective when it pushes away from The Hairy One’s usual antics. You want to see Michael Myers karate chopped by Lone Wolf McQuade? Step right up.
Okay he’s not Michael Myers, but he may as well be; Pov shots and the unstoppable killer’s relentless gait definitely harken back to Halloween and even the previous year’s Halloween II in a bid for some of that sweet slasher bread. It worked well enough at the box office,...

Last night, two important precursors for specific technical categories gave out their awards, helping to potentially inform how two Oscar fields may end up turning out. The pair of groups are the Cinema Audio Society, which ties into Best Sound Mixing at the Academy Awards, while the Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists Guild obviously ties into Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars. Did these results clear up any races? Well, they gave us some frontrunners, but I don’t think anything is locked up. Not with how this year has gone, at least. That being said, these were the expected outcomes yesterday, so take that into consideration as well. The Cinema Audio Society (or Cas) top prize went to Bohemian Rhapsody, taking the category of Live Action Motion Picture. The animated winner was Isle of Dogs, while the Documentary victor was Free Solo. This sets up Bohemian Rhapsody to...

In terms of the Oscar race, the popular Freddie Mercury biopic, starring Best Actor favorite Rami Malek, strengthened its frontrunning status. The emotional Live Aid concert footage, in particular, benefits from the thunderous IMAX presentation.

Exclusive: Sentient Entertainment has obtained the feature rights to Losing Clementine, the debut novel from author Ashley Ream. Better Call Saul writer and producer Ann Cherkis has been brought on to adapt the screenplay.
The story follows the exploits of a famed, yet tormented artist as she attempts to get her messy affairs in order en route to her eventual planned suicide, only to be waylaid by the even greater personal chaos of everyone around her.
Sentient President Renee Tab, who recently exec produced the Jennifer Garner thriller Peppermint, is producing this project. Tab also served as a producer on the FX anthology series, Feud: Better and Joan.
“I was turned onto the novel by Gillian Flynn and fell in love with Clementine. It’s so unique to know a woman so brave, so brilliant, so bold and yet so tortured,” said Tab. “The story is heartwarming, thought-provoking, hilarious, captivating and empowering.
