Love may actually be all around, but it was mostly a white Christmas when it came to 2003 rom-com “Love Actually.”
Writer-director Richard Curtis reflected on the beloved classic film, saying the lack of diversity makes him “feel uncomfortable and a bit stupid” two decades later.
“There are things you’d change but, thank God, society is changing, so my film is bound, in some moments, to feel out of date,” Curtis said in a interview with Diane Sawyer for ABC’s 20th-anniversary special “The Laughter & Secrets of Love Actually: 20 Years Later” (via Entertainment Weekly).
Curtis continued, “The lack of diversity makes me feel uncomfortable and a bit stupid. You know, I think there are sort of three plots that have sort of bosses and people who work for them.”
The film focused on 10 separate love stories, with Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Laura Linney, Bill Nighy, Liam Neeson, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Alan Rickman,...

Listen is a film that will make you cry, but more importantly, it will just make you really angry. Angry at the system it portrays, as a film that shines a harsh light on the social services industry, and a labyrinthine process. Yet the film doesn’t judge the individuals, but the system they’re placed within. To mark the release of this moving film, we had the pleasure in speaking to two of the film’s leads, Lúcia Moniz & Sophia Myles. We discussed their knowledge of the world they inhabited in this film, and on themes director Ana Rocha is portraying. What transpires here is a fascinating chat with two talented actresses, that go into depth about their roles and careers. Be sure to watch the full interview below.
Synopsis
In the London suburbs, Bela and Jota face serious difficulties when “social services” raise concerns about the safety of their three children.

Lúcia Moniz is a Portuguese mother pitted against social services in this deeply moving piece of social-realist cinema
The Portuguese actor Lúcia Moniz is maybe still best known as the woman Colin Firth falls for in Love Actually. Now she stars in this sombre, angry social-realist drama from the Portuguese film-maker Ana Rocha (a London Film School graduate), which sees Brexit Britain through European eyes. There are some implausibilities and untied plot strands, but also something scary and overwhelmingly sad.
Moniz and Ruben Garcia play Bela and Jota, a Portuguese couple with three children in a London council flat who have fallen on hard times. Bela makes some money cleaning houses but Jota is angry and depressed at not having been paid for timber-yard work. Their daughter Lu (Maisie Sly) is deaf, her hearing aid has stopped working, and suddenly the family are in the abyss of poverty. Bela is...

Marco Pontecorvo’s account of the Virgin Mary’s radiant appearance in 1917 Portugal finds little space for doubt, nor drama
Picking fault with faith films on dramatic grounds is like objecting to explicit sex scenes for being “boring”. Believers may well be swept away by this glossy account of the 1917 Miracle of the Sun in Fátima, Portugal – witnessed by 30,000 people and already the subject of feature films in 1952 and 2009. But given the inherent lack of drama in the kind of unbreakable faith on display here, anyone wishing to tell the story needs to work much harder than this laboured treatment to wring any nuance, conflict or indeed true sublimity from it.
To be fair, director Marco Pontecorvo – son of The Battle of Algiers’ Gillo – doesn’t disgrace himself on the latter front. There’s an undeniable sacred frisson as Mediterreanean winds caress the olive trees and invisible feet flatten the saltgrass,...

In 1999, opera legend Andrea Bocelli sang at the Academy Awards with Celine Dion when their duet of “The Prayer” was up for a best song Oscar. Twenty-two years later, Bocelli has another shot at boosting a theme song to a nomination as “Gratia Plena,” which he recorded for the movie “Fatima,” enters the race. Composer Paolo Buonvino (“Medici: Masters of Florence”), who wrote the new song, will also contend for his “Fatima” score.
“Fatima” is directed by Marco Pontecorvo and stars Harvey Keitel and Sônia Braga alongside Joaquim de Almeida, Goran Visnjic and Lúcia Moniz.
Below, Bocelli and Buonvino speak exclusively with Variety about crafting the music of “Fatima” and the importance of the film’s message.
What was it like collaborating with Paolo Buonvino for the realization of the song “Gratia Plena”?
Bocelli: It has been a very interesting one. As soon as he composed “Gratia Plena,” he wanted me to hear it.

Before she moved to the U.K. to take an M.A. in filmmaking in 2010, Ana Rocha left behind a long and respectable acting career in her native Portugal. This year sees the first fruits of that career change with her directorial debut “Listen,” which premieres Tuesday at the Venice Film Festival, competing in the Horizons section. Shot last summer in London’s East End, the film deals with the little-known issue of forced adoptions and tells the story an immigrant couple, played by Lúcia Moniz and Ruben Garcia, whose deaf daughter (newcomer Maisie Sly) comes to the attentions of social services after a misunderstanding at school.

In 1952, Warner Bros. released a version of “The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima” that boasted, “To the best of human knowledge, and according to the testimony of 100,000 witnesses … This Is A True Story!” That film, hokey in some ways, inspirational in others, purported to be a fact-based account of a faith-based story, one that occurred in 1917 against the backdrop of a world war, wherein three Portuguese shepherd children experienced several visits by the Virgin Mary, who bestowed certain insights upon them before unleashing a spectacular solar light show so as to convince all those assembled.
Director Marco Pontecorvo revisits these events in the superficially suspicious “Fatima,” which arrives at a moment when faith and facts find themselves in direct opposition, when claims of “fake news” render the very notion of “a true story” all but meaningless. The film releases in theaters and on demand amid a global crisis — not just the pandemic,...

Religious movies seem to target a specific audience most of the time, but with a superb cast, Fátima promises to cross that line.
Many people are aware of the mystery of Fatima, surrounding visions of the Virgin Mary in 1917 Portugal, whether they're practicing Christians or not.
Even the faithless often find suggestions of miracles worthy of discussion, and Fatima has been igniting such conversations for a century.
In 1917, during the first World War that ravaged Europe, three young children in Fátima, Portugal, claimed they had encountered the Virgin Mary while tending to their sheep.
Via prophetic visions, the Virgin suggested that if sinners do not repent, then a war far worse than that they were suffering would be thrust upon them. But the details were secret, not to be revealed until they're explicitly told they could reveal them.
Whether you're six or sixty, a vision is a frightening thing. To...

Bob and Jeanne Berney’s Picturehouse will open Marco Pontecorvo’s Fatima in theaters and direct to home (PVOD) throughout North America on Aug. 28.

"What do you want from us?" Picturehouse has debuted an official Us trailer for an indie drama based on a true story titled Fatima. A powerful and uplifting drama about the power of faith, Fatima tells the story of a 10-year-old shepherd and her two young cousins in Fátima, Portugal (Google Maps) in 1917, who report seeing visions of the Virgin Mary. Their revelations inspire believers but anger officials of both the Church and the secular government, who try to force them to recant their story. “Love Actually” fans outside the U.K. finally get to catch up with all of their favorite characters from the Christmas tearjerker, almost fifteen years after its 2003 release. The 15-minute special originally aired in the U.K. in March as part of Red Nose Day, an international day of giving organized by the charity Comic Relief.
Spoilers Ahead for the “Love Actually” reunion:

The special opens with Juliet and Peter (Keira Knightley and Chiwetel Ejiofor) finishing up a screening of “Love Actually,” which presumably they’ve been watching on repeat every two hours since the last time we saw them. When bearded Mark (Andrew Lincoln) shows up to disrupt their now fifteen-year marriage yet again with his poster board confessions, it turns out he’s only there to brag that he married Kate Moss.

The Love Actually Red Nose Day Special already aired on Thursday, May 25 on NBC, but in case you missed it, the short is now available to watch online! The script for the short was written by Richard Curtis and it wonderfully revisits the characters of the classic 2003 film Love Actually. It shows us what our favorite characters are up to in 2017. It's a pretty great reunion special that I think fans of the original film will enjoy and appreciate.
Love Actually is one of my favorite romantic comedies and I thought this was a real treat. The cast that returns includes Hugh Grant, Martine McCutcheon, Keira Knightley, Andrew Lincoln, Colin Firth, Lucia Moniz, Liam Neeson, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Olivia Olson, Bill Nighy, Marcus Brigstocke and Rowan Atkinson. Patrick Dempsey also shows up. When talking about the special, Curtis had this to say:

However you might feel about “Love Actually,” it’s not often you get a cast like Hugh Grant, Martine McCutcheon, Keira Knightley, Andrew Lincoln, Colin Firth, Lucia Moniz, Liam Neeson, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Olivia Olson, Bill Nighy, Marcus Brigstocke, and Rowan Atkinson. And all those players have returned for the film’s sequel, which aired in the U.K. in March and in the U.S. last night as part of the Red Nose Day special.

Once again, love actually is all around. NBC's Red Nose Day special aired tonight, giving us the Love Actually sequel we've been waiting months for, ever since it aired in the UK on their Red Nose Day in March. Fortunately for those of us who watch the 2003 film every year and could probably recite the entire thing if you'd like us to, the reunion did not disappoint, despite a few missing faces. Juliet (Kiera Knightley) found Mark (Andrew Lincoln) outside her door once again, this time with a beard and married to Kate Moss.Jamie (Colin Firth) and Aurelia (Lucia Moniz) were revealed to have three kids with another on the way, though Jamie didn't know that because his Portuguese wasn't...

Fans of Love Actually finally got to see their favorite characters 14 years after the release of the beloved rom com -- and it turns out not a lot has really changed.
The star-studded cast reunited for Red Nose Day Actually, a short sequel to the celebrated comedy that looked at how some of the film's cutest couples have been living out their lives.
As it turns out, Juliet (Keira Knightley) is still married to Peter (Chiwetel Ejiofor), and she's still getting unsettling, quasi-romantic cue card visits from Mark (Andrew Lincoln), who has since tied the knot with supermodel Kate Moss (who plays herself).
