In 2017, I ended my marriage of almost 12 years. It wasn’t one big betrayal. No one was a villain, not really. What happened was the oppressive weight of being a wife and mother and the burden of heterosexual marriage broke me. Three years later, in 2020, I realized I wasn’t alone. That the cultural weight of society keeps slipping onto the shoulders of mothers and wives. We are breaking. My book This American Ex Wife examines the way marriage is inherently unequal, and the way our culture defines love as misery,...

George Jones died 10 years ago today, robbing country music of one of its greatest vocalists. While Jelly Roll may not be the answer to the question of “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes,” the Tennessee singer turned in an admirable rendition of “Bartender’s Blues” on Tuesday night during an all-star tribute concert to Jones in Huntsville, Alabama.
Jelly Roll stayed true to Jones’ version of the song, wrapping his raspy voice around the chorus of needing “four walls around me, to hold my life/to keep me from going astray.

From a performance last week on the CMT Music Awards to fronting Lynyrd Skynyrd on their own “Tuesday’s Gone,” Jelly Roll has been making it a habit of stealing the show. That’ll probably be the case when the imposing, face-tattooed country singer-rapper puts his spin on a George Jones song at Still Playin’ Possum: Music and Memories of George Jones, a tribute concert set for April 25 in Huntsville, Alabama.

Keith Whitley would have turned 66 this year. Born July 1st, 1955, in Ashland, Kentucky, the country singer died in 1989 from alcohol poisoning. He was 33. Still, the output from his brief career continues to influence fellow artists and inspire fans. An exhibit dedicated to the performer opened at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in 2019, and it’s not a stretch to include him in any conversation about future induction into the hall.

In 1993, the year that saw the worldly debuts of future stars Scotty McCreery, Kelsea Ballerini and Kane Brown, country music’s reigning royalty included duo Brooks & Dunn, the now-solo Wynonna Judd and newcomer Billy Ray Cyrus. Last year, after Rolling Stone Country published an in-depth report on the culture of sexual harassment and misconduct in the world of country radio, Tennessee legislators introduced Hb 1984/Sb 2130, a bill that would offer full-time employee rights to artists and freelancers concerning sexual harassment. Led by Democrats Rep. Brenda Gilmore and Sen. Jeff Yarbro, it eventually died in the House without ample Republican support — but found new life this week when reintroduced by Rep. Bob Freeman as Hb 387.

Our night in downtown Nashville begins in a bank-turned-tattoo-parlor-turned-Luke Bryan-themed restaurant with a pickup truck dangling over the stage where a band is covering Maren Morris’s “My Church.” The space has six levels, eight bars, numerous light-up “Luke Bryan” signs and more flat screens than a Best Buy. But we are on the roof drinking Coors Light and eating fried sushi.

Nashville, Tenn. -- Mindy McCready's time in Nashville was filled with music, and her memorial service in Music City reflected that.

Maybe it’s because I saw Barry Manilow on Broadway last night (highly recommended), but my Valentine’s Day morning commute was all about the love songs. Now, I don’t normally feel guilt over anything I genuinely enjoy — even if I should — but only on Valentine’s Day would I let myself string these hits together:
Barry Manilow’s “Weekend in New England”: He sounded exactly the same last night, as did the crowd’s collective “Ah” after the first notes. The key change gives me chills.
Air Supply’s “Chances”:
Neil Diamond’s “Hello Again”:...

There were no catfights on Thursday's American Idol. No one stormed off the set. Everyone was on their best behavior as contestants auditioned in Baton Rouge, La.
That's not to say that things didn't get weird. Nicki Minaj nicknamed one contestant "Mushroom" and rubbed her fingers through his hair to bestow her "special powers" on him. (Whenever Minaj speaks, Mariah Carey simply stares off into space, as if she's just trying to find her happy place.) The Idol producers also began a baffling trend of splicing footage of squealing farm animals between the bad auditions.
But there were some bright spots: Burnell Taylor,...

Troy and Rhonda have two young daughters together, born in 2001 and 2002.

Well, we already know how it’ll end, but then again, is that different from any other Lifetime movie? The sweet and simple Garth Brooks song “Unanswered Prayers” is being made into a Lifetime original, the network confirms. Without a Trace’s Eric Close will star as the husband who’s torn between his wife (Samantha Mathis) and what could’ve been with his high school crush (Mädchen Amick), who comes back to town. Brooks is among the executive producers on the film, which will premiere in November. Presumably Lifetime went with “Unanswered Prayers” over the tearjerker “The Dance” because it’s a happier ending.

The tale told in this low-budget, award-winning documentary is so powerful, so compelling, that it overshadows any reservations about the quality of the filmmaking and storytelllng.
Brandon Teena was a Nebraskan teenager, born Teena Brandon, who decided to live her life as a man. Moving to a small town and forging a new identity, she fooled people to a wide extent and even had several girlfriends.
But eventually her secret was revealed, with tragic results; she was raped by two local young men, who one week later killed her, along with two other victims, to prevent her from testifying. Susan Muska and Greta Olafsdottir's chronicle of these events is receiving its theatrical premiere at New York's Film Forum.
The 16mm film is crudely photographed and edited, and deviates little from the talking heads syndrome, but there is no denying the dramatic impact of the story and the tragic central figure who inhabits it.
The film begins in a lighthearted fashion, with testimony from Brandon's various girlfriends who affirm her sensitivity and her qualities as a terrific "boyfriend." We even hear from Brandon's killers, although the filmmakers don't reveal that fact until later on.
Brandon's story turns fateful when the small town of Falls City discovers her true identity, the result of her arrest for petty theft. Particularly incensed are two young men, ex-cons named Thomas Nissen and John Lotter, who are deeply offended at their friend's deception. They brutally beat and rape Brandon, who reports the crime to the local authorities.
She is met with suspicion and outright hostility, however, as evidenced by a chilling audiotape of the interrogation conducted by the local sheriff, who is more accusatory than comforting. One week later, Brandon, 21, is shot to death, together with a pregnant woman friend and another visitor who happened to be at the scene. Nissen and Lotter are arrested, and are now in prison.
Brandon Teena's story is so dizzying in its implications, and touches so many chords, that it has the resonance of a great novel; it has been the subject of several in-depth journalistic pieces, and, not surprisingly, a feature film is in the works.
This extremely low-budget effort, which includes interviews with many of the principals involved as well as audio excerpts from the trial, doesn't do it full justice, and is often confused and scattershot in its storytelling approach. It also relies too heavily on cliched shots of barren rural landscapes and snippets of banal country music. But it nonetheless has a great power, and deserves wide theatrical exposure before its eventual berth on video and public television.
