Director Corrie Chen has hit a stride in her career where she is able to make projects she really believes in.
Tonight is the premiere of one such example in Sbs/Goalpost Television’s New Gold Mountain, with Chen having directed all four episodes.
Set in 1857 Ballarat, the mini-series looks at the gold rush from the perspective of Chinese miners, with the story unravelling around a murder mystery. The stellar ensemble cast includes Yoson An, Alyssa Sutherland, Christopher James Baker, Dan Spielman, Mabel Li, Leonie Whyman, Sam Wang, Rhys Muldoon, Alison Bell, Chris Masters Mah and Travis Cotton.
Sbs director of content Marshall Heald has called New Gold Mountain the broadcaster’s “most ambitious drama yet”, with producer Kylie du Fresne noting it draws inspiration from Deadwood. The series is dense in detail in terms of costuming and production design, and boasts a diverse cast of around 65 speaking roles, all in multiple languages,...

In Goalpost Pictures’ gold rush drama New Gold Mountain, Alyssa Sutherland plays a widow who overcomes the trauma of an abusive marriage and embarks on a quest for greater independence in 1850s Australia.
While it may be easy to classify her turn as Belle Roberts as a strong female character, the actress told If it was a description she was hoping to avoid.
“I like the attention we put on having much more well-rounded female characters but I get a little bee in my bonnet sometimes when all this focus gets put on these ‘strong female characters’,” she said.
“Women are just strong – that’s how it is.
“All the women in my life are very interesting and compelling people – it’s just taken a while to see the same thing on screen.”

Filmed in Sovereign Hill and around Melbourne and regional Victoria, the epic four-part series from Goalpost Television will air over two weeks, starting October 13 at 9.30pm on Sbs and Sbs On Demand.
Directed by Corrie Chen, New Gold Mountain stars Yoson An, Alyssa Sutherland, Christopher James Baker, Dan Spielman, Mabel Li, Leonie Whyman, Sam Wang, Rhys Muldoon, Alison Bell, Chris Masters Mah and Travis Cotton.

In their third collaboration following Don’s Party and The Club, David Williamson and Bruce Beresford are developing Nearer the Gods, a biopic about Sir Isaac Newton, the eccentric 17th Century English scientist and mathematician.
Adapted from Williamson’s play which was staged by the Queensland Theatre Co. in 2018, the drama laced with humour will trace Newton’s struggles to persuade the sceptical Royal Society to publish his revolutionary discoveries including formulating the laws of motion and universal gravitation.

‘Bilched.’ (Photo credit: Jay Dykes)
After making his screen debut as the star, writer and co-producer of an Australian teenage romantic comedy, Hal Cumpston could not have imagined what would happen next.
Three weeks after production of Bilched wrapped in Sydney, the 19-year-old was contacted by Us talent agency Industry Entertainment, suggesting he audition for one of the lead roles in AMC Studios’ The Walking Dead spin-off.
Cumpston did a selfie and was then asked to go to Los Angeles, where he nailed the role of Silas in the 10-part series which is now shooting in Richmond, Virginia.
Silas is described as a gentle giant, a shy loner who hates the fact that he scares people in the show created by Scott M. Gimple, which focuses on the first generation to grow up during the zombie apocalypse, co-starring Alexa Mansour, Nicolas Cantu, Aliyah Royale and Annet Mahendru.

‘Backtrack Boys.’
Russell Crowe last week urged his 2.73 million Twitter followers to see Backtrack Boys in cinemas, lauding Catherine Scott’s feature documentary as really special and a great story.
A reasonable number of Crowe’s followers did so as Umbrella Entertainment launched the film as an alternate content release, which means exhibitors have the flexibility to run limited sessions.
Meanwhile writer-director Heath Davis’ drama Book Week began its staggered roll-out on eight screens via Bonsai Films.
Backtrack Boys examines a youth program run by rule-breaking jackaroo Bernie Shakeshaft (hailed by Crowe as a “good fella and a bit of a genius”) on the outskirts of Armidale Nsw. Voted as the top feature documentary at the Melbourne International Film Festival, the film collected $24,000 from one session on Saturday and Sunday on 44 screens, and $56,000 including festival screenings.
This opens theatrically in Australia on Thursday.
It’s really special.
Go and see it.

The director of Not Suitable For Children, in cinemas today, is planning a feature version of his Academy Award nominated short film.
Peter Templeman, wrote and directed short film The Saviour, which received an Oscar nomination in 2007.
Templeman told Encore that the story from the original film will take place within the larger story arc about two American mormons who settle the Australian outback and attempt to set up a church.
The director is co-writing the story with Michael Lucas, who yesterday was nominated for an Australian Writer’s Guild award for Not Suitable For Children.

The former Australian Prime Minister, who is now the Foreign Affairs Minister, helped Africa-based Sean Taylor get a tourist visa so that he could support his Oscar-nominated actress wife as she attends the awards ceremony next week. Remember that one year (2001) when the list-happy AFI (American Film Institute) decided to compete with the Globes and the Oscars in year end prizes? No, that didn't last long. But there's another AFI, The Australian Film Institute, that has been around for a long time and is in no such danger of being a one-off. This year, they're all about the amazing family crime drama Animal Kingdom which they awarded with a record breaking 18 nominations. Sure, the film is in danger of being way overhyped for people who are coming to it late (which is just about everyone given the sorry state of international distribution for dramas of virtually any kind) but for those who can slough off the "omg" raves, I guarantee you'll think it at least an insinuating and well executed crime drama.

A few days ago, Rhys Muldoon talked about Steven Soderbergh's secret improv movie, filmed in Australia with the cast of Soderbergh's play, Tot Mom.
Now, The Playlist writes that another of Soderbergh's forthcoming projects just signed a slew of all-star cast members. Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender, and Dennis Quaid have all agreed to star in Knockout. The movie, described as a "revenge action-spy thriller," centers around mixed martial arts champion Gina Carano, whose only previous movie-acting credit was Blood and Bone with Michael Jai White.
All four actors will portray members of Carano's special unit. Carano herself is an agent who is betrayed by someone close to her. The rat will most likely be played by either Fassbender or another high-profile male actor, who was not named because his participation is yet to be confirmed. Douglas will play a governement agent, while McGregor will play the owner of a private military group.

Last summer, Steven Soderbergh announced that he may be retiring from filmmaking in a few years. We can only hope that this was said out of disappointment for losing control of Moneyball and so shouldn't be taken seriously.
The next few years will tell whether Soderbergh was speaking in earnest, but in the meantime he's continuing his trend as one of the most versatile and prolific directors working today. He's already laid the foundation for the current indie movement with Sex, Lies, and Videotape. He's done major Hollywood projects like Ocean's Eleven and Erin Brockovich while simultaneously creating experimental works like Schizopolis and Bubble, which he released simultaneously in theaters and on DVD. And of course, he suffered through the six-hour biopic Che, which he cited as a brutally stressful shoot.
Now, The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that the 46-year-old director shot a movie in secret while in Australia.

According to one of the actors in the play he's been directing in Australia, Steven Soderbergh has used the production's cast to shoot a quick 'n' cheap, largely improvised movie that could stand as a third release for him in 2010.Rhys Muldoon, one of the Aussie actors in Tot Mom, which the director worked on late last year with Cate Blanchett's Sydney Theatre Company, has spoken to the Sydney Morning Herald about working on the movie, though he hasn't offered any further details about the untitled pic.Soderbergh never seems satisfied with the lazy, one-film-a-year attitude of some of his peers: in 2009, he released The Girlfriend Experience and The Informant!, plus finally let Che see the projectionist's light outside of festivals and the Us. Now it looks like he really wants to aim for three films made or released in one year - this likely improvised new project, thriller Knock Out and Liberace,...

Steven Soderbergh is a freakin' machine. Just when it seems like he's sick of the whole filmmaking game, he knocks out a little film right under everyone's nose. Last month Soderberg directed a play called Tot Mom for Cate Blanchett's theatre company in Sydney. Based on his own script, the play cast local actors in a drama based on the story of accused infanticide suspect Casey Anthony as presented by CourtTV and CNN personality Nancy Grace. But while working on Tot Mom, Soderbergh reportedly shot an improvised quickie film using much of the same cast. What's it about? Well, um, we don't really know. The Sydney Morning Herald (as noticed by Soderbergh lovers at The Playlist) reveals the existence of the film. Note that the project, which actor Rhys Muldoon says was "pretty much improvised," is reportedly not related to Tot Mom, besides using much of the same cast.

Possession(s), a new Australian short, featured one of the most notable launches in recent memory. To coincide with the film’s release a famous Peter Booth artwork, Painting (Man With Bandaged Head), was sold off in The Deutscher and Hackett Important Fine Art Auction.
The tie-in between the film and the auction comes in the shape of actor Laurence Fuller who used the painting, which he owned, as inspiration for the dark, brooding short. His character Frank, upon seeing the Peter Booth work, becomes embroiled with a sense of obsession; he simply has to own the piece and will do anything to make it so. However, it soon becomes clear that Frank is not the only one consumed by the desire to possess.
Laurence Fuller shines in the lead role and it is easy to see why he is a much sought after young actor. Having attended the Method...
