If you’re hoping for drama at this year’s Academy Awards, we suggest looking somewhere other than the Best Director race. Gold Derby’s Oscar Experts from major media outlets unanimously predict that there’s a “near zero” chance Christopher Nolan (“Oppenheimer”) won’t be taking home this trophy. The filmmaker has already claimed precursor prizes at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, and is also the favorite at the upcoming BAFTAs and DGA Awards.
For the record, Nolan’s fellow nominees in the director category are Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”), Jonathan Glazer (“The Zone of Interest”), Martin Scorsese (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Justine Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”). Not making an appearance in this race is Greta Gerwig (“Barbie”), who was shockingly snubbed on nominations morning — though she is nominated as a screenwriter.

Bobby Rivers, who was known for hosting Food Network’s “Top 5” and VH1’s “Watch Bobby Rivers” celebrity talk show, died Tuesday in Minneapolis at the age of 70.
Wisn 12, the network Rivers joined as the city of Milwakee’s first Black film critic on television, confirmed the news. The TV host’s sister Betsy also confirmed his death via Facebook.
“Bobby passed away last night and is no longer in any pain,” she wrote Wednesday.
Upon graduation from Marquette University in the 1970s, Rivers began his career at Milwaukee radio station Wqfm where he was hired as a morning newsman. After he grew in popularity as an on-air personality, Rivers was let go from the network in July 1978. Over 1000 listeners signed three separate petitions to the station to keep Rivers, who renegotiated his contract and stayed on for another year.

Disgraced ex-congressman George Santos may have been expelled from the House of Representatives on Dec. 1 by a vote of 311-114 — but that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the story for the alleged serial grifter and sometimes drag queen from New York. HBO Films has already optioned The Fabulist, a book about Santos’ rise and fall, for adaptation, with Frank Rich and Mike Makowsky (HBO’s Bad Education) attached to executive produce and Makowsky set to write. As for Santos, public opinion seems to think he’ll find a future on Dancing with the Stars — so much so that the show trended on X alongside news of his historic expulsion.
Asked if he would consider competing on the show that has featured the likes of Sean Spicer and House majority leader Tom DeLay (indicted on charges of conspiring to violate political fundraising law), Santos told reporters, “Today, I...

For the 20 years of predicting hundreds of awards shows, Gold Derby has not made a mistake in calculating scores for an event. However, for Tuesday’s Tony Awards nominations, Jordan Donica (“Camelot”) accidentally did not have his name checked as a nominee for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. That caused our score report to be inaccurate by one slot, so please accept our apologies for the mistake.

Parker Posey in Daisy von Scherler Mayer's Party Girl. Michelle Williams (“The Fabelmans”) was the front-runner for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars when we thought that was where she would be competing, so it was a surprise when it was announced that she’d be campaigning as a lead actress instead. Before “The Fabelmans” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, Paul Dano was the presumptive favorite to win Best Supporting Actor for his role in Steven Spielberg‘s semiautobiographical drama. But there has been a major shift in the forecasts of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed. Dano has lost a little bit of ground, slipping down to second place, while his co-star Judd Hirsch has skyrocketed to third place.

Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) has taken over the lead in our Oscar Experts’ predictions for Best Actor. This follows his film’s premieres at the Venice Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival, both of which ended in lengthy standing ovations. Fraser is also the recipient of a tribute award at the Toronto fest, which could be just the start of his awards journey.
Fraser stars in the film as a 600-pound man trying to reconnect with his teenage daughter after abandoning his family. The film is directed by Darren Aronofsky and has been met with generally positive, though not glowing reviews — 64 on MetaCritic, 78 fresh on Rotten Tomatoes — but Fraser’s performance has been called “fully and radiantly human,” “a confident leap forward,” and “a truly great comeback performance.”

With the 2022 Tony Awards nomination announcement just days away, Broadway watchers are scrambling to finalize their predictions after a stellar season on the rialto. To help guide us through the ups and downs of the major Tony categories, I am joined by Michael Musto, Brian Lipton (Cititour) and my Gold Derby colleague David Buchanan for a heated debate. Which productions and performers will receive happy news on Monday, May 9 when nominations are announced? Watch our 2022 Tony Awards slugfest above with final nominations predictions.
With “The Lehman Trilogy” far out front in the Best Play race, I wonder aloud how many other plays from the dynamite first half of the season will make the cut this year. “I think this is one season, based on the buzz, where they are going to remember things that are close,” suggests Musto. Normally Tony voters prefer shows which are still open, and still generating income.

It looks like Penelope Cruz could get her fourth Oscar nomination with the help of the filmmaker who got her her very first. As of this writing the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from major media outlets rank her third in the race for Best Actress for “Parallel Mothers,” the latest film from Pedro Almodovar, who directed her to a Best Actress bid for “Volver” 15 years ago. That now puts her ahead of Lady Gaga (“House of Gucci”) and Jennifer Hudson (“Respect”) and right behind front-runner Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”) and strong challenger Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”).
In “Volver” (2006), Cruz played Raimunda, whose late mother returns from the dead with unfinished business. After that awards breakthrough she won Best Supporting Actress for “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” (2008) and was nominated again for Best Supporting Actress for the movie musical “Nine” (2009), so she racked up all three of her nominations in...

After winning four Emmys for “Game of Thrones,” Peter Dinklage might finally get his first shot at the Oscars. He stars as the title character in “Cyrano,” an adaptation of the stage musical of the same name, which itself was based on the 19th century play “Cyrano de Bergerac.” Since the film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on September 2, Dinklage has been rising in our Best Actor odds, based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. As of this writing he’s in position for a nomination, ranked fifth with 19/2 odds.
DISCUSSEmmy nominees who you think could end up Oscar nominees
Dinklage’s performance as the title character, who pines for Roxanne (Haley Bennett) but feels unworthy of her due to his appearance, has been described as “dashing” and “poignant,” and he “confirms his charisma, vigor and versatility.” It doesn’t hurt that the film is helmed by Joe Wright,...

If there’s one thing we should know by now, it’s never to underestimate Olivia Colman at an awards show. She was a surprise Oscar winner for “The Favourite,” and she was recently a surprise Emmy winner for “The Crown.” Well, she’s got another chance at Oscar for her role in Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s directorial debut, “The Lost Daughter,” and she’s been gradually climbing in our odds.
As of this writing Colman ranks seventh for Best Actress with 14/1 odds based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users. So she’s not quite among the top five predicted nominees yet, but there’s still a very long runway between now and the Oscar nominations in January, and it has taken less than a month for Colman to ascend from hardly being in the conversation at all. The Netflix film doesn’t open until December, and...

There have been many documentaries about the gay liberation movement, equal rights and same-sex liberties for the queer community and the underrepresented and often obscured plight of transgender individuals, many of them tied to the decades-long AIDS crisis. But there has never been a doc that encapsulates all of them at once that also manages to be uplifting and non-foreboding as well — until “Pride.”
FX’s six-episode nonfiction series “Pride” covers these issues and much more. Beginning with the 1950s through current day, it often eschews a standard talking-heads approach (all well worth hearing) to narrow down its narrative, sometimes even framing people in side-view versus head-on, to create an extra sense of vulnerability.
“Everybody had the desire and the goal to give voice to people who hadn’t normally been spotlighted in these films,” says editor Rosella Tursi, who worked on the back three episodes, which cover the ’80s to 2020s.
