His nearly 60-year acting career started inauspiciously — with an Air Force training film — but Tom Selleck has soared since then. In a new memoir, You Never Know, the beloved Blue Bloods star looks back at his onscreen legacy. Below, we selected a few excerpts from this entertaining read. He was floored by meeting Farrah Fawcett As a young actor, Selleck booked a Western-themed 1972 commercial for Dubonnet, a wine product. His costar: Farrah Fawcett. I was introduced to my “leading lady.”It was her! I’d seen the Noxzema commercial, and it was her! Let me explain. Joe Namath did a shave-cream commercial where he gets his face caressed and is sung to by a beautiful young woman. How do I say this? I found her performance very impactful. I tried to have my grown-up-adult-been-there-before face on as she smiled, shook my hand, and said, “Hi, I’m Farrah.” Farrah couldn...

When a sitcom reaches a certain level of longevity, it can be easy for writers to take their audience for granted. Storylines get lightly reworked, if not recycled wholesale. Cheap ratings are scored by having a significant character get married (call it the "Rhoda boost"). And there's no better way to guarantee the maximum amount of eyeballs than to have a major celebrity play themselves within the world of our favorite characters.
This typically works. Who can forget the time Bobby Brady faked a serious illness to earn a bedside visit from Joe Namath on "The Brady Bunch," or the time that pint-sized prankster Arnold Jackson pulled the same trick to get Muhammad Ali up to the Drummond's penthouse on "Diff'rent Strokes?" These are memorable episodes to be sure, but there's nothing more to them than the cameo.

Before he started filling up the nation's drug store book racks with tawdry tales of romance and suspense, Sidney Sheldon was one of Hollywood and Broadway's most prolific writers. He could write comedies, musicals, musical-comedies, mysteries, dramas, thrillers ... just about everything short of slasher flicks (though he probably would've knocked out one of those had they been a thing during his 1940s - '60s heyday). Clearly, he had an ear for what worked, and he wasn't just knocking out quickie programmers. He won a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for the Cary Grant-Myrna Loy-Shirley Temple screwball hit "The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer," and earned a Best Musical Tony for the Gwen Verdon-led Broadway smash "Redhead."
And when television came calling, rather than turn up his nose as many of his established film and theater colleagues did during the medium's early days, he enthusiastically picked up the phone.

As they were writing the pilot script for their new Max comedy series “Bookie,” co-creators Chuck Lorre and Nick Bakay thought it would be fun to add a real-life Hollywood star playing a version of themself as an inveterate gambler. The series stars stand-up comedian Sebastian Maniscalco as Los Angeles sports betting bookie, so it made sense that his character might run into a few high-roller celebrities during his travels.
In early drafts of that Lorre and Bakay script, the character was left as a “Tbd” — to be determined. But Lorre couldn’t shake an idea he had for who might be perfect for the role: “It should be Charlie,” he tells Variety. “I remember Charlie was very much engaged in in sports betting and he would tell me stories about it all the time. You know, when things were good.”

Aaron Rodgers’ weekly slot on Pat McAfee’s YouTube show is often a newsmaking draw, but Wednesday’s edition reached a whole new level as the quarterback confirmed his “intention” to play for the New York Jets.
The daily show drew just shy of 500,000 concurrent live viewers today, an audience several times the size of that for ESPN or other cable TV networks on a typical weekday. During the NFL’s free agency period, the destiny of Rodgers has been a major storyline as the 39-year-old kept the sports world and New York City in suspense for weeks about whether he would head to New York, stay with the Green Bay Packers, or just retire. Some have compared Wednesday’s silence-breaking interview with LeBron James’ widely hyped revelation in 2010 that he would “take his talents to South Beach” and play with the Miami Heat, a move famously packaged for TV as The Decision.

Len Dawson, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback who led the team to a now legendary Super Bowl victory in 1970 and would later establish a successful and long-running career as a sports broadcaster for, among others, NBC and HBO, died today in Kansas City just more than 10 days after entering hospice care. He was 87.
His death was announced by his family. In a statement to Kansas City’s Kmbc, where Dawson had previously worked as a sports broadcaster, the family said, “With wife Linda at his side, it is with much sadness that we inform you of the passing of our beloved Len Dawson. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother and friend. Len was always grateful and many times overwhelmed by the countless bonds he made during his football and broadcast careers. When it comes to ’90s TV, you might remember the familiar notes of your favorite theme song, the original series that have been rebooted since (or are soon to be), or maybe your favorite sitcoms. And it was on those comedies that we saw plenty of A-listers making some very memorable cameos. As TV Insider is launching the new Throwback section, we’re taking a look back at our favorites. Who can forget Joe Namath on The Simpsons lecturing about caring for your car? Or RuPaul on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, insisting that the titular character (played by Melissa Joan Hart) needed to sign a release form while giving her a makeover? Kobe Bryant stopped by Sister, Sister to film a commercial, while Ray Charles got quite a bit of applause when he appeared on The Nanny. Over on Friends, the friends got distracted when Billy Crystal and Robin Williams...

Super Bowl Lv drew 96.4 million total multiplatform viewers on Sunday, when 2021’s big game aired on CBS. That all-in tally was the lowest since 2007. It includes a ton of platforms: the CBS Television Network (which brought in 91.629 million of those viewers), CBS Sports and NFL digital properties, Buccaneers and Chiefs mobile properties, Verizon Media mobile properties and ESPN Deportes television and digital properties.
Despite the marquee quarterback matchup, Super Bowl Lv was a pretty boring game. It was mostly noncompetitive, and the Kansas City Chiefs played sloppily. Tom Brady, who was named the game’s Mvp, threw for just 201 yards in the winning effort. He had three touchdown passes (two to former New England Patriots teammate Rob Gronkowski) to zero interceptions. That was more than enough for the comfortable 31-9 victory.

It’s been nearly half a century since her tragic death at 27 from an accidental heroin overdose, but Janis Joplin’s life and music are still hugely resonant. In her landmark new biography, Janis, writer Holly George-Warren cites Pink, Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga, and Lucinda Williams among the many artists who have been influenced by the first female rock star’s courageous passion, earthy, genre-defying sound, and self-emptying vocal power. Joplin was a white kid from a small town in Texas who fell in love with the blues and went...

Actress Carol Lynley, whose popularity in the 1960s and ’70s grew with films Return to Peyton Place, Under the Yum Yum Tree and Bunny Lake is Missing, as well as TV appearances in some of the most watched series of the era while peaking with 1972’s disaster film classic The Poseidon Adventure, died Tuesday after suffering a heart attack at her home in Pacific Palisades, CA. She was 77.
Her death was announced by her friend, the actor Trent Dolan.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of a moment that forever changed television coverage of the National Football League – it is the anniversary of the infamous “Heidi Game.”
The contest pitted the New York Jets against the Oakland Raiders, two bitter rivals in the American Football League, the upstart league in the pre-nfl merger era. The Jets, led by quarterback Joe Namath, took a 32-29 lead in the hard-fought game with less than a minute to play.
That’s when trouble ensued. NBC-tv, which was televising the game, had scheduled a presentation of Heidi, the tale of a young girl’s adventures in the Swiss Alps, for 7 Pm Et. That was usually considered a safe time slot for regular programming, given that most pro football games ran about an hour per half in that era.
But this Jets/Raiders game ran slower than expected, and exceeded its scheduled three-hour time slot.
