Jan Haag, who a half-century ago founded the landmark Directing Workshop for Women at the American Film Institute, has died. She was 90.
The remarkable Haag, who also was an actress, painter, poet, novelist, playwright, writer of travel stories and creator of needlepoint canvases, some of which required hundreds of hours to complete, died Monday in Shoreline, Washington, according to the AFI and the Mb Abram agency.
Haag had directed dozens of educational films for the John Tracy Clinic and the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare when she became the first woman accepted into the Academy Intern Program at the AFI in 1970, three years after it was founded by George Stevens Jr.
She was assigned to Paramount’s Harold and Maude (1971), directed by Hal Ashby, then joined the AFI staff in 1971, and among her duties was to administer the nonprofit’s film grant program funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.

"You are the only one stupid enough to show up..." Brutally honest line. A24 has debuted an official trailer for an indie drama titled The Last Movie Star, from writer/director Adam Rifkin. The film stars acting legend Burt Reynolds as acting legend Vic Edwards, an aging movie star who no longer has the same fame he once had. He's invited to a tiny, two-bit film festival in Nashville, and befriends his driver, who reminds him there's more to life than just being famous. The full cast includes Ariel Winter, Clark Duke, Ellar Coltrane, Nikki Blonsky, Kathleen Nolan, as well as Chevy Chase. This premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, but like most Tribeca films, we've never heard of it before now. I'd rather recommend watching The Hero with Sam Elliott instead, both pretty much have the same plot, though The Hero is actually quite good. Here's the first official...

New York City – Taking a well-deserved one more turn around the block, the legendary Burt Reynolds was at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival representing his new film “Dog Years,” directed by Adam Rifkin, and co-starring Chevy Chase and Ariel Winter. The director and three stars were joined on the Red Carpet by festival co-founder Robert De Niro.
“Dog Years” is semi-autobiographical for Reynolds, as he portrays an 80 year old actor who was once one of the biggest stars in movie history. Attending a Nashville film festival retrospective, he is assigned a reticent escort/driver (Winter), and they end up taking a road trip to Knoxville for one last hurrah. The film uses archival footage of Reynold’s actual film career.
