Stephen Colbert bid farewell to several 2016 presidential tributes felled by the Iowa caucuses on the latest installment of The Late Show's riotous Hunger Games send-up, "Hungry for Power Games."
First up, Republican candidate Rand Paul, whose early campaign gimmicks included a series of viral videos in which he burned and shredded the United States tax code. Taking a page from Paul's "book of heavy-handed metaphors," Colbert dropped a portrait of the Kentucky senator in a toaster and cackled, "Goodbye Rand, you're toast!" One of the best parts of the 2016 presidential campaign has been Stephen Colbert's take on the hopeful candidates we've lost along the way. As "Julius Flickerman," brother of Hunger Games' Caesar Flickerman, Colbert dons a fantastic wig and jacket and raises a glass of various alcoholic drinks to toast those who have dropped out of the race in the "Hungry for Power Games." After the "Iowa Cornucopia Bloodbath" saw the departure of three wannabe presidents (well, four, but Rick Santorum announced he was leaving after Late Show was taped ... which means maybe we'll get another "Hungry for Power Games" segment tonight!), Colbert had an embarrassment of riches: Rand Paul, from District 12; Martin O'Malley, from District Abs; and Mike Huckabee, from Huckadistrict.

Though a winner still hadn't officially been named in Iowa's Democratic caucuses, that didn't stop Hillary Clinton from seemingly declaring victory as her neck and neck battle with rival Bernie Sanders drew to a close Monday night. The former secretary of state took the stage to address her supporters and breathe "a big sigh of relief," despite a narrow margin of victory. NBC News reported that Clinton was marked as the "apparent winner" by the Iowa Democratic Party Chair, but Sanders has yet to concede to the former secretary of state in the "historically close" race. Thanks to FCC regulations, everyone who's running for president is entitled to 12 minutes and 5 seconds of free airtime on NBC this week, to match what Donald Trump got when he hosted Saturday Night Live. The American people might have thought that Bernie Sanders’ campaign was a one-debate-and-done deal, but whaddaya know, after his strong showing in SNL's last democratic debate the polls came in and they were nearly unanimous: America needs Bernie. Or rather, America needs Larry David’s impression of Bernie. The show brought David back for the cold open — and a brief appearance as a heckler during Trump’s monologue — proving that America's favorite curmudgeon can really upstage anyone, even Kate McKinnon’s finely-tuned Hillary, even Donald Trump at his Trumpiest, and, well, Martin O'Malley who? (Sorry, Taran Killam.) Hey, even if Sanders never gets the presidency, David can certainly fund a few home renovations with this SNL cash.

Democratic presidential candidate Martin O'Malley will be the first to insist that he is not Tommy Carcetti, despite the ample parallels between his own rise from Baltimore mayor to Maryland governor, and the assumptions of many Baltimoreans that Carcetti, like so many of the show's characters, has an obvious real-life inspiration. Yet sometimes O'Malley can't even help himself from inviting the comparison, like he did last night at a campaign event in Philadelphia, where he joined an Irish band onstage to play guitar and sing The Pogues' "Body of an American," which "The Wire" used several times as the anthem sung by cops at police wakes. Now, the song predates "The Wire," and Carcetti isn't actually involved in any of the scenes where it plays, but even so, it's hard to watch that Vine and not think O'Malley's having a bit of fun with all the assumptions about his fictional counterpart.

Mark Cherry trial. In ratings news, Happy Endings continues its steady rise, this week up 17%.David Krumholtz is finalizing a deal to play the other lead opposite Michael Urie in the CBS pilot Partners. David has done plenty in Hollywood (including playing Mr. Universe in Serenity), but to me he'll always be Wednesday's first love in Addams Family Values. Apparently, there's nothing like a potential hurricane to get nervous governors to demand people get the hell out of places. First, an exasperated Chris Christie assured New Jerseyans at the shore that they were tan enough already, and today, Maryland's Martin O'Malley pleaded with CNN's Wolf Blitzer to get reporter Chris Lawrence out of the water along the Maryland shore.

New York - Discovery Communications employees returned to the company's headquarters in Silver Spring, Md. on Thursday - a day after a hostage crisis had shut it down.
Sources said the building was open for business Thursday after police had secured it late Wednesday and security forces made sure to rid it of explosives.
An overnight sweep of the Discovery building turned up "a number of items that were disrupted by the bomb squad, including two backpacks and two boxes," local TV station ABC 7 and news site Tbd.com reported.
Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley in a statement praised Montgomery County police and the Discovery corporate team. "I also want to commend Discovery CEO David Zaslav and the employees of Discovery for executing their crisis plan flawlessly and for remaining calm during this crisis," the statement said.

Wall Street caused the Bp disaster. Short-termism is the problem. The Benefit Corporation is a solution.
The Old Rules
For public companies, decisions are driven by the quarterly earnings call. Meet the numbers, keep your job. Beat the numbers, collect your bonus. The rules of this game are stunningly simple. And they are backed by the force of law.
U.S. corporate law states that the legal obligation of the directors and officers of a company is to serve the interests of shareholders. Period. Full stop. This is true even when serving the interests of shareholders comes at the expense of its workers, community, or the environment. This is why we have a race to the bottom for the lowest wages or most lax environmental standards. This is why safety corners are cut willfully, egregiously, and repetitively; this is how mountains of Bbb loans become Aaa at a scale too...
