In 1982, "Cheers" premiered and started one of the great runs in TV history, staying on-air for 11 seasons and 275 episodes — not bad for a show that almost crashed and burned in its first season. Of course, I, being born in 1988, missed most of that run. But I've always been aware of the series' massive influence and lasting legacy as one of the finest sitcoms ever made. "Cheers" maintains that standing 30 years after the final episode aired.
Aired on May 20, 1993, "One for the Road" quickly became the second-highest-rated series finale of all time, just losing out to CBS's "M*A*S*H" series finale. But it wasn't just the people watching from home that made the end of "Cheers" so momentous. As Upi reported at the time, "Thousands gathered at bars and parties across the nation to watch." In other words, the 90-minute finale episode was somewhat of a national moment.

The NBC comedy Cheers had a number of memorable guest stars. There were celebrities like Alex Trebek and Tip O’Neill. There were actors who would become well known for other roles like Harry Anderson and John Mahoney. In fact, Mahoney guest starred on Cheers when another actor bailed forcing the Cheers producers to recast.

Cheers writer Ken Levine discussed the show’s celebrity guest stars on an episode of his Hollywood & Levine podcast. Here’s why Mahoney had to fill in at the last minute.
The original Sy Flembeck guest star on ‘Cheers’ got really nervous
Levine didn’t out the original actor for the part, but he shared how nervous he was. This was a season 11 episode so Cheers must have been daunting. Levine was entirely sympathetic to the nervous actor, and did his best...

The NBC comedy Cheers attracted several guest stars playing themselves. These were public figures like baseball player Wade Boggs and of course Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek. One of the first guest stars in season 1 was politician Tip O’Neill. He was a good sport, but refused to do one joke the writers had written.

Cheers writer Ken Levine revealed the lost Tip O’Neill scene on an episode of his Hollywood & Levine podcast. Here’s the scene that was missing from season 1, episode 18, “No Contest.”
The history of politicians as ‘Cheers’ guest stars
Long before Joint Chiefs Chairman William J. Crowe appeared in season 7, O’Neill came into Cheers as a guest star for a drink. Levine explained who O’Neill was in 1983.
“For Cheers, we got Thomas ‘Tip’ O’Neill as our stunt casting in season 1,” Levine said on Hollywood & Levine.

Dan Lauria will play former Speaker of the House Thomas “Tip” O’Neill in the upcoming biopic Reagan.
He’ll play opposite Dennis Quaid, who plays the 40th president.
Dan Lauria as Tip O’Neill
In a statement, director Sean McNamara said, “He and Dennis have the chemistry needed to portray Reagan and O’Neill as two politicians who were respectful adversaries.”
In Washington, the 1980s friendship between Reagan and O’Neill has long been viewed as a contrast to recent decades, as partisan rifts have gotten more personal.
Others in the case include Penelope Ann Miller as Nancy Reagan, Mena Suvari as Jane Wyman, Kevin Dillon as Jack Warner and Jon Voight as a fictional Kgb agent who tracks Reagan over the course of 40 years. Howard Klausner and Jonas McCord wrote the script.
Reagan is scheduled for a 2023 release, with shooting already completed.

A video spot of Rudy Giuliani hawking MyPillow products elicited ridicule and a bit of wonder of what has happened to the man once known as America’s Mayor, but it’s hardly anything new for a political figure to give in to the temptations of commercial endorsements.
The spot was part of Giuliani’s Common Sense podcast, this one centered on the latest fascination with UFOs.
“I’ve been sleeping on MyPillows for some time,” Giuliani said on his show, posted on YouTube. “I love them, simply the very best pillows ever made. But I just found out they also have a wide assortment of other incredible products. Like their mattress toppers, sheets, towels.” Then Giuliani held up footwear as he said, “And slippers! And more!”
