It takes The Matrix about three minutes to become the coolest thing you’ve ever seen. That’s when Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) evades a cop by breaking his arm, punching his throat, and then freezing mid-air so the camera can whip around her before she unleashes a kick that sends him across the room. Three minutes. And everything changed.
But the most impressive part may be the fact that the amazing stuff doesn’t stop there. For the 117 minutes that follow, The Matrix directors Lana and Lilly Wachowski offer an improbable mix of kung fu action, Continental philosophy, and fin de siècle cool. It’s no wonder their movie became a hit in theaters and on video. Nor is it any wonder that so, so many movies and TV shows borrowed from The Matrix, at once cementing the original film’s legacy while also cheapening its effect. In immediate years...

As Italy has ramped up its efforts in the last year to lure in international productions, so too has Rome’s Mia Market been making big strides in attracting global companies and executives to its annual five-day industry confab. The innovative Italian event, which has fast become a top destination in the TV market calendar, is returning for its ninth edition on October 9-13, 2023 and this year looks set to be bigger than ever with top execs from Paramount, Imagine, Banijay and Skybound Entertainment all set to attend.
“We have been prepping for this edition for a while and I think it’s even better than last year because we started working much further in advance,” says Mia director Gaia Tridente of this year’s event, which will be the second one with her at the helm.

It's astonishing to think what an enormous hit Tom Shadyac's film "Bruce Almighty" was when it came out back in 2003. Jim Carrey played Bruce, a mid-level TV reporter who is selfish and a little disappointed with his job. When a rival named Evan (Steve Carell) is promoted above him, Bruce wails to God that life is unfair. Astonishingly, God Almighty (Morgan Freeman) appears to Bruce in order to give him a lesson. For one week, and limited to only a small portion of Buffalo, New York, Bruce will be given the infinite power of the Divine, teaching him that being God isn't as easy as all that. Bruce uses his Godly powers for petty, personal things like parting traffic and increasing the bust size of his girlfriend Grace (Jennifer Aniston).
Naturally, Bruce's cavalier use of power -- and his lazy acumen when it comes to answering prayers -- leads to chaos.

Amazon’s Prime Video has taken worldwide rights to Peter Farrelly’s long awaited “Ricky Stanicky.” The long-gestating film will shoot in Melbourne, Australia where the film’s two stars Zac Efron and John Cena have now arrived.
Ricky Stanicky is the name of an imaginary character invented and perpetuated by three friends over several years so that they have someone to blame for their misbehavior. When their partners become suspicious, they’re forced to hire a washed-up actor to bring Stanicky to life. The move has dire, but hilarious consequences. Cena will play Stanicky.
The film marks a return for Farrelly to the R-rated comedy genre, in which he previously delivered “Something About Mary” and “Hall Pass.”
For Efron, the film is his second with Farrelly who directed his recent “The Greatest Beer Run Ever,” which premiered globally on Apple TV+ last September.

Prime Video has taken the global distribution rights to the latest film from Oscar-winning director Peter Farrelly. “Ricky Stanicky” will be the “Green Book” director’s first R-rated comedy since “Hall Pass” in early 2011; his brother and ’90s-era co-director Bobby Farrelly will not be involved. The picture will star Zac Efron, John Cena and Jermaine Fowler, and will begin production this month in Australia.
The picture concerns three friends who invent a fictional character to avoid unwanted situations but then must hire an actor to portray that fabricated friend when their respective significant others start to smell a rat. Producers include Paul Currie of Footloose Productions and Thorsten Schumacher of Rocket Science in association with John Jacobs of Smart Entertainment. The screenplay was penned by Farrelly, Brian Jarvis and Jim Freeman from an original spec script by Jeff Bushnell and Steve Oedekerk.

Jim Carrey starred in the 2003 film Bruce Almighty which was written by Steven Koren, Mark O’Keefe and Steve Oedekerk. The film was a success at the box office and could’ve had a sequel with Carrey reprising his role but it ended up not getting made.
In an interview with SyFy Wire, Koren and O’Keefe recalled that on the premiere of Bruce Almighty they ran into producer Michael Bostick and pitched him an idea for a sequel. The follow-up story would be called “Brucifer” and would involve Carrey’s Bruce acquiring Satan’s powers.
“[Carrey’s] manager and him wanted to do Brucifer,” Koren said. “We went in and pitched it, but it never quite worked out, because it was later on … It would have been another giant movie and I don’t think they wanted to do it. It just didn’t work out for some reason, but a lot of people loved it,...

We've all had those "Sliding Doors" moments where we wonder what our lives might be like if something went differently. Usually, they come in the form of major life decisions -- promotions, relationships, time spent with loved ones -- but sometimes they're in the form of movies that got away. Reader, I'm having a real "Sliding Doors" moment right now, because I suddenly, desperately need to live in a world where Universal made a "Bruce Almighty" sequel about the devil called, of all things, "Brucifer."
"Bruce Almighty" screenwriters Steve Koren and Mark O'Keefe, who co-wrote the film's script with Steve Oedekerk, recently spoke to SyFy Wire about the 2003 comedy in which Jim Carrey gains the power of God from Morgan Freeman's wise, white-clad deity. During the conversation, they opened up about an ultimately scrapped third film that would've seen TV reporter Bruce (Carrey) headed in, well, a different direction.

The 1994 comedy "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" kicked Jim Carrey's movie career into high gear. Despite Jim Carrey's belief that audiences would either love or hate the movie, the film pulled in 107 million at the box office against a budget of 15 million. This success led to an immediate follow-up reaching theaters one year later. And while filming the sequel, "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls," appears to have been an unpleasant experience for many of the people involved, it was an especially rough one for co-star Simon Callow.
In "Pet Detective," Ace Ventura (Carrey) helps the NFL's Miami Dolphins retrieve their stolen special attraction dolphin from a disgruntled and vengeful ex-player who once cost the team the Super Bowl. In the sequel, the eccentric pet detective returns for a safari in Africa to help relocate Shikaka, the great white bat that is sacred to the fictional Wachati tribe. This time,...

A story about Jim Carrey might make him sound like a cheesy 1980s infomercial psychic telling you to "visualize it, dream it, attain it." But how Jim Carrey-esque of him, after all. Carrey exploded onto the scene in 1994 with "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective." But he'd been plugging away at comedy since the 1970s — first with standup and then small movie roles throughout the 1980s. His profile began to grow with a starring role on Fox's sketch show "In Living Color."
In 1994, Morgan Creek Entertainment put down 450,000 on a lottery ticket with Carrey as the lead in "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective." It was a gamble, as some thought Carrey's over-the-top style might not work. Spoiler alert: It did.
Morgan Creek Entertainment cashed in their lotto ticket to the tune of 100 million at the box office, and Carrey became a bona fide Hollywood A-lister. He had a string of hits including "The Mask...

With hits like Wet Hot American Summer and Arrested Development, Netflix has been riding high on nostalgic rebooting, but Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword Of Destiny shows a more vulnerable side to the streaming service’s original content (we’ll save Fuller House for the TV section). What once was a whimsical callback to acrobatic martial arts has become a repetitive, stone-etched journey that’s heavy on outdated pageantry, and light on mystical amazement.

Steve Oedekerk's 2002 dubbed comedy Kung Pow: Enter the Fist is one of those comedies I'll always have to regret liking when I was around nine-or-ten years old. It's a sophomoric, slappy-happy rip-off of Woody Allen's What's Up, Tiger Lily written with all the sophistication and charm of two middle-school boys riffing on a copy of an old 1970s martial arts feature. It probably had to do with my love of kung fu -- something I still adore today -- and being of the right age. This is all to say, it's one of those black marks in my film-loving life from which I constantly atone for. It didn't make a dent in the box office, but I suppose it had a modern following on home video who clamored up its irreverence in a pre-YouTube era as I did then. Does that warrant the need to have a sequel...

Richard Linklater, the auteur behind films like Dazed and Confused, the Before Sunrise trilogy, and A Scanner Darkly may be walking away from the WB's planned remake of The Incredible Mr. Limpet. The director, who peppers in studio fair like the 2005 Bad News Bears remake between projects he's more passionate about, seems to want to capitalize on the current buzz surrounding his film, Boyhood, to make another more personal film. The writer-director spent 12 years working on Boyhood, literally shooting the film little by little, with the same cast, depicting a true coming-of-age tale.
The film has been getting absolutely sensational reviews since it's limited release last month- scoring 99% on RottenTomatoes with 168 critics having chimed in. The film features a cast that includes frequent Linklater collaborator Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette, and a handful of unknown actors. The reception to this film, which clearly meant a lot to the filmmaker, has seemingly knocked Mr.

You would be forgiven for not instantly recognising the name The Incredible Mr Limpet. It comes from a novel – ‘Mr Limpet’ – written by Theodore Pratt in 1942, about a shy bookkeeper falling off a pier and turning into a fish. Unfazed, he embarks on a life assisting the Us Navy in locating Nazi U-boats during World War II. The novel was adapted into a film in 1964, with Don Knotts in the title role, Arthur Lubin as director, and the story presented in a mix of live-action and animation. Now, phenomenal filmmaker Richard Linklater is bringing Limpet back to the big screen, and it all sounds very exciting.

It's easy to forget that, two decades ago, Jim Carrey was just a talented TV sketch comedian who'd been trying for a decade to break into films. (Remember his roles in "Peggy Sue Got Married," "The Dead Pool," or "Earth Girls Are Easy"? Didn't think so.) But then came "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" (released 20 years ago this week, on February 4, 1994), in which Carrey starred as a hyperactive sleuth tasked with finding the Miami Dolphins' kidnapped mascot, and suddenly, he was an A-list box office draw.
Critics didn't think much of the puerile Ace, whose favorite gag was talking through his butt cheeks. But audiences loved him, enough to make Carrey an overnight star after 10 years of trying, and enough to put the film on permanent rotation on basic cable for the next 20 years.

Listen, I know we’ve all been waiting with bated breath for that The Incredible Mr. Limpet remake to finally get out the door and into theaters. Details have been scarce ever since the project was first announced in the late 90s- first, Kung Pow: Enter the Fist mastermind Steve Oedekerk was ready to direct, with Jim Carrey as the astounding man-fish. Oedekerk stepped down, but the troops were rallied and Brad Bird was offered the gig. Then, Bird caught a glimpse of Mr. Limpet’s new look: a CGI fish with Carrey’s human face transplanted on via mo-cap. He described it thusly: “If you saw this in the water, you would get out of the water and run screaming and tell everyone the world was ending.” Plans for the film fell apart shortly afterward. Then, they fell back together when Enchanted director Kevin Lima boarded the project. Zach Galifianakis was in talks to play a...

No, we’re not just talking about old movies seen within newer movies here; this is extreme stock footage – using the old to create a new narrative, something for fun, or even for the sake of story. Jim Carrey is set to star in the long time coming comedy Ricky Stanicky. THR reported on the film that was re-written and will be directed by Steve Oedekerk (Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls) saying it begins when three teens pull a prank by burning down a house in their neighborhood.
The kids then create a fake person to take the blame named, that’s right —“Ricky Stanicky”—and 20 years later are still using the alibi name to get out of every bad situation. The ensemble comedy is said to be in the same R-rated vein as The Hangover, that’s for now anyways, you know how studios like to get more people in the theater with cuts to make it more PG. It’s nice to hear Carrey back on the comedy wagon with his latest turn in The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and a crazy looking role in the upcoming Kick-Ass 2 sequel.

It seems like Jim Carrey's acting career is about to take off again. I think Kick-Ass 2 is going to give his career a much needed boost. I was hoping he'd start choosing better movie roles, and it's been announced that he's set to star in a new comedy called Ricky Stanicky, which sounds like another good project for him.
The movie will re-team the actor with Steve Oedekerk, who wrote Bruce Almighty and wrote and directed Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. It's been kind of a mixed bag recently for Jim Carrey. On the one hand, his latest comedy, "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone," did an amazing disappearing act at the box office last month. On the other hand, he's been building up a lot of buzz for his scene-stealing role in the upcoming superhero satire "Kick-Ass 2." And on the third hand, he got himself embroiled in controversy yet again thanks to an unabashedly anti-nra skit over on Funny Or Die.
But while Carrey has been up and down recently, he's about to get some big ups, as according to The Hollywood Reporter Carrey has just signed on to headline the new comedy "Ricky Stanicky."
Of course, we use the word "new" here loosely, as "Ricky Stanicky" has been stuck in development hell for years over at Summit. In fact, as far back as 2010, James Franco was attached to headline this farce...

Like two butt cheeks clapping together in perfect harmony, resuming a familiar conversation in which no questions need be assed, Jim Carrey will reunite with his Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls and Bruce Almighty director Steve Oedekerk on the upcoming Ricky Stanicky. Described as “an ensemble comedy in the vein of The Hangover” (a logline that should be on anything you intend to sell these days), Ricky Stanicky concerns a trio of ne’er-do-well teens who burn down a house in their neighborhood, then invent a fake culprit—the titular Stanicky—to take the blame. After 20 years of using ...

It's been a couple years since we heard about a comedy called Ricky Stanicky that had James Franco attached to star and Yes Man director Peyton Reed circling. But all that has gone out the window as THR has learned that Jim Carrey has signed on to lead the Summit film, and his Bruce Almighty writer and Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls director Steve Oedekerk is at the helm. The story follows three teens who pull a prank and end up burning down a house in their neighborhood. In order to escape the consequences, they create a fake person to take the blame, Ricky Stanicky, and they're sticking to their story 20 years later. In fact, they've used Ricky Stanicky to get out of a whole slew of other uncomfortable situations, and now their girlfriends and wives want to meet this master of disaster. That's when they hire an out-of-work actor to play the part.

Jim Carrey isn't a washed up actor, but he may play one on the big screen. THR reports that Carrey has decided to take the title role in the Summit Entertainment comedy "Ricky Stanicky." According to Deadline.com, Carrey was circling the project for over a year; his final decision to sign on came when Steve Oedekerk ("Bruce Almighty," "Ace Venture: When Nature Calls") was attached to direct.
Carrey hasn't had luck at the box office of late -- he co-starred in the recent flop "Burt Wonderstone" -- but "Ricky Stanicky" sounds like a hit waiting to happen. The film focuses on a trio of teenage friends who burn down their neighbor's house by mistake and then blame the accident on the fictional Ricky Stanicky. Years later, as adults, the friends must conjure up Stanicky and hire a washed-up actor (Carrey) to play the part. THR compared the concept of "Ricky Stanicky" to "The Hangover.

After a year of going back and forth, Jim Carrey has agreed to play the leading role in Ricky Stanicky, for Summit Entertainment. This announcement comes after Steve Oedekerk (Ace Ventura: Pet Detective) signed on to direct the film, so that might have something to do with Carrey’s decision.
The comedy centers on three male friends who have used an invented friend, Ricky Stanicky, for the past two decades as an excuse to explain their way out of sticky situations. When their spouses demand to meet Stanicky, they hire an actor to portray him.
Reports say that James Franco was once attached to the project. Maybe he decided to leave the project after all those other projects piled up. Regardless, Carrey seems like the right choice for the role.
Carrey recently starred in the Warner Bros. comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. He can be seen coming up in Kick-Ass 2.

Between 2009 and 2012 Jim Carrey only made two live-action films (Mr. Popper's Penguins and I Love You, Phillip Morris), but this year he is making a come back in a major way. In addition to the recently released The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and the upcoming Kick-Ass 2 - which will be in theaters this August - he is also attached to star in Jared Harris' Loomis Fargo and has now added yet another title to his slate, this time reuniting with Steve Oedekerk, with whom he worked on both Bruce Almighty and Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Carrey has come aboard Ricky Stanicky, a long in development comedy that has been gestating over at Summit Entertainment. In addition to directing, Oedekerk will also be doing a re-write of the script, which is described as "as an ensemble comedy in the vein of The Hangover,...

A Christopher Nolan blockbuster ”interstellar voyage to the furthest reaches of our scientific understanding” of course! The Les Miserables actress is in final talks to reunite with her Dark Knight Rises director for his highly anticipated and annoyingly secretive film Interstellar, based on the theories of theoretical physicist (and time travel enthusiast) Kip Thorne. Believe it or not, but James Franco doesn't always do everything he winds up committed to, and a couple years back you might recall he signed up to star in "Ricky Stanicky." He had just wrapped "127 Hours," but even so, the movie seemed a long way off and it seems it wound up stalling, even though the script placed on the 2010 Black List. But alas, it has come back to life with a slightly surprising new star. Jim Carrey has now boarded the movie, and, even more, his old pal Steve Oedekerk (the guy who wrote and directed "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls," and penned "Bruce Almighty") will direct the flick. And oh yeah, Oedekerk will also rewrite the script by Jeff Bushell, that centers on a couple of pals who use a made-up friend as a means to get away from their spouses, for nearly two decades. However, when...

Jim Carrey will re-team with Steve Oedekerk on the comedy Ricky Stanicky at Summit Entertainment. It was a well thought out decision. Carrey has been orbiting this one for about a year, and finally came aboard when his Ace Ventura: Pet Detective cohort Steve Oedekerk signed on. The comedy is about a group of guys who as teens created a pretend scapegoat, Ricky Stanicky, to blame things on. It is a perennial success, until their wives insist on meeting Stanicky. Carrey, last seen in Burt Wonderstone, has been taking to the web to make a Hee Haw parody about gun control that has driven the conservatives crazy. Pretty clever stuff, if you ask me.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about comedy script Ricky Stanicky. Back in 2010, James Franco agreed to star in the proposed film, but has since dropped out to make 73,000 other movies and write some poetry or whatever. Things appear to be moving again, as Steve Oedekerk is on to direct and has lured old mucker Jim Carrey for the lead.Summit Entertainment is backing this one, which has a script by Jeff Bushell and follows three male friends who invent the titular Mr Stanicky as a way to get out of family time and to explain away any tricky situations. For those of you who know your Oscar Wilde, think Mr Bunbury in The Importance Of Being Earnest.Yet after 20 years of this ruse apparently working, trouble strikes when their other halves demand to meet the mystery man, and they must scramble to find an actor that can portray him.

It's curious that a director as idiosyncratic and...well, just plain weird as Tim Burton has become one of Hollywood's A-listers. But from 1989's "Batman" to 2010's billion-dollar-grossing "Alice in Wonderland," the helmer has managed to turn his dark, gothic imagination into something that genuinely captures the hearts and minds of the general public. Indeed, even films like "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and the upcoming "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," which are produced by Burton, show that he, like Alfred Hitchcock before him, has become one of the few directors who's a true brand name, with audiences knowing what they can expect when they purchase a ticket.
But despite his success, Burton, like every filmmaker, isn't necessarily able to get everything he wants made. The path of his career has been littered with a number of projects that either didn't get made at all, or got made with radically different interpretations and visions to them.

A film based on the flexible, stretchable toy "Stretch Armstrong" is still alive - but it has changed studios and lost its star says Reuters.
Three years ago came word that Universal Pictures was creating "Stretch Armstrong 3D", a project based on the toy that would use a script by Steve Oedekerk ("Bruce Almighty") and be produced by Brian Grazer.
The toy was launched in the 70's and was a 13-inch, blond-haired, bulky muscled figure in a speedo whose limbs could be stretched to nearly four feet. Naturally an actor who looked nothing like it, "Twilight" hunk Taylor Lautner, was confirmed to be starring in the film approximately two years ago.
The project was one of over a half dozen projects Universal and Hasbro were developing together, the first being the big-budget "Battleship" opening in May. Last Summer it appeared as if Universal was essentially culling all its Hasbro game...

"Cowboys & Aliens," the big-budget blockbuster film starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, hits theaters today. Many fans are likely aware that the film has been billed as based on a graphic novel, like so many other recent blockbusters. But what they may not be aware of is just how tangled and torturous a path it was for "Cowboys & Aliens" to reach the big-screen, and how very different its origins are from other comic book films.
To shed some light on that, we're taking a look at the trail this property blazed all the way to the Wild West of Hollywood.
"Cowboys & Aliens" is the brainchild of Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, co-owner of Platinum Studios, a multimedia company. Rosenberg himself has his roots firmly embedded in the comic book industry, being one of the founders of Malibu Comics in 1986, an independent publisher which secured its place in comics history both by serving...
