Lift, a thrilling heist film currently streaming on Netflix, has been directed by F. Gary Gray. The film stars famous faces like Ursula Corbero, Kevin Hart, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and a host of other skilled actors. Much like the concept of the Spanish series Money Heist (2017), Lift focuses on a gang of robbers trying to steal expensive artifacts and sell them in the black market. The team is hell-bent on gaining the right price for a piece of art from the dark web rather than just letting it be sold in any ordinary auction. It is their teamwork that helps them. They managed to succeed in their international art heists, and the expertise of every member adds value to the team. The wonderful cast of the film could, however, not stop the film from having an inadequate plot! Abby, the Interpol agent, joins the team for an unexpected heist to take...

What do you get when you combine Pierce Brosnan, Nick Cannon, and some people called Jamie Chung, Hermione Corfield, Rockmond Dunbar, Rami Jaber, and Mike Angelo? A massive flop, apparently. In a way, it's a shame "The Misfits" bombed back in 2021. The film made a meager $1.5 million on a reported budget of $15 million, but despite the abject box office and even worse reviews, it was at least propelled by decent enough intentions.
Director Renny Harlin, who's also overseeing the upcoming "Strangers" trilogy series, grew up in Finland loving Hollywood action movies and thrillers, and managed to accomplish the impossible by breaking into the U.S. film market and establishing himself as a big name director. Films such as "Die Hard 2," "Cliffhanger," and "The Long Kiss Goodnight" helped cement his standing, but he also proved he had a penchant for horror by directing movies like "A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master,...

The latest Warner Animated DC feature film adapts the 2000-2001 Elseworlds miniseries Batman: The Doom that Came to Gotham. The fun of the Elseworlds comics, and soon the live-action versions under the new artistic regime, is taking the familiar and imagining them in other times and other places. Here, we do back to the early 20th century and overlay it with a dose of Loftcraftian horror.
Cowritten by Mike Mignola and Richard Pace, two men better known for their artistic skills, this story was designed for visual impact, something Troy Nixey did well in print, and the animators from Jase Ricci’s script and co-directed by Sam Liu and Christopher Berkeley, replicate nicely.
Basically, an arctic expedition headed by Bruce Wayne (David Giuntoli), sent to check on a previous team led by Professor Oswald Cobblepot (William Salyers) reveals horrors and a missing professor. The only surviving is Grendon (David Dastmalchian...

Based on a 2001 three-issue comic book miniseries written by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and Richard Pace, Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham is an alternate-world tale that introduced an alternate version of Bruce Wayne and the residents of Gotham to Lovecraftian horrors. It’s the most overtly horrific entry in the animated Batman franchise as well as the strangest.
In the 1920s an expedition led by Bruce Wayne arrives in Antarctica looking for another expedition, this one led by Professor Cobblepot. What he finds instead are mutated creatures and the professor’s undead assistant Grendon whom he brings back to Gotham.

Photo: ‘The Misfits’/The Avenue Entertainment ‘The Misfits’ - A Poor Taste Heist Film 'The Misfits,' not to be confused with the 1961 western-drama film starring Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable, is an outdated and rather poor-taste comedy heist of wannabe misfits. Director Renny Harlin alongside writers Robert Henny (‘Who’s Your Caddy’) and Kurt Wimmer (‘Point Break’), conceived a film with a few attractive criminals, threw them in the Middle East, and wrote jokes with a poor taste of terrorism and stereotypes. The film stars Golden Globe nominee Pierce Brosnan who plays Richard Pace, a playboy, pick-pocketing thief who has a thing for expensive watches. After escaping from prison, he meets a team who classifies themselves as "The Misfits," and honestly, there isn't anything "misfit" about them. Plot: A crew of international do-gooders enlists the aid of a master thief, Richard Pace (Pierce Brosnan) to help them foil a notorious prison magnate (Tim Roth) with ties to international terrorism. Had “The Misfits” been made 22 years earlier — say, in the sweet spot between James Bond globe-trotter “The World Is Not Enough” and the release of Guy Ritchie’s “Snatch” — chances are, audiences would’ve had a pretty good time watching “Die Hard 2” director Renny Harlin’s idea of a cutting-edge heist movie. “The Misfits” stars Pierce Brosnan as one of half a dozen not-so-petty criminals who team up to knock off a for-profit prison in Abu Dhabi, where the guy who built it (Tim Roth) has been stockpiling blood money for terrorists in the form of well-secured gold bars.
But this is 2021, and Harlin — who peaked with “Cliffhanger,” bombed with “Cutthroat Island” and has been treading water ever since — is still making movies for ’90s sensibilities. Even the idea of a team of rule-breakers who pool their talents (all of which seem perfectly suited for breaking the law) to...

Paramount has unveiled an official trailer for an action thriller known as The Misfits, the latest movie from Finnish filmmaker Renny Harlin, who had an epic run in the 90s but hasn't made anything that exciting recently. After being recruited by a group of unconventional thieves, renowned criminal Richard Pace finds himself caught up in an elaborate gold heist that promises to have far-reaching implications on his life and the lives of countless others. Another of these updated takes on "Robin Hood", where corporate Hollywood studios try to tell a story about stealing from the rich and giving to the poor but, huh, for some strange reason they can never get this story right. I wonder why. The Misfits cast includes Pierce Brosnan, Jamie Chung, Rami Jaber, Hermione Corfield, Mike Angelo, Tim Roth, and Nick Cannon. I love me a good heist movie, but it ...

We’ve never been especially shy about our appreciation of Mark Russell’s comics work. Flintstones was hilarious; Snagglepuss Chronicles was groundbreaking; Riddler: Year of the Villain was outstanding and shockingly straightforward; even his first work, God Is Disappointed In You, is some of the smartest, wryest writing you’ll find. In Second Coming (out now in collected edition), Russell and artists Richard Pace and Leonard Kirk took the Christ metaphor so often applied to Superman and stripped out the metaphor.
“Second Coming actually began as two completely different story ideas. One about Christ returning to Earth to be appalled by what’s been done with his teachings and another story about a superhero coming to realize just how few of the world’s problems can be solved with superpowers,” Russell tells us in a conversation about his Ahoy comics work. “But, at some point, it occurred to me that...

Ahoy Comics will step in to publish Second Coming, the satirical series that depicts Jesus Christ returning in modern times as a superhero-in-training. The spoof series from writer Mark Russell and artist Richard Pace was dropped from the March release schedule of Warner-owned DC Comics after its announced premise sparked online protest, pundit fury, and a major CitizenGo petition effort.
The series had been set-up at DC’s Vertigo imprint as a creator-owned project so the property reverted to Russell and Pace when they and DC amicably agreed that the series might be suited to a less-corporate outlet. Ahoy will launch the creator-owned series on July 10 with the first of a six-issue story arc. Award-winning artist Amanda Conner will handle the covers.
Official synopsis: “God commands Earth’s mightiest superhero, Sunstar, to accept Jesus Christ as his roommate and teach him how to use His power in a more powerful way.

Bloodthirsty has been a pretty enjoyable read up to now. Nicely plotted storylines, decent character development, a slightly surreal blend of action and horror all topped off with a side helping of social conscience and political comment. Seriously, what more could you ask for from a funny book? I have especially enjoyed the text pieces that follow the story, all factual and all written about Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans and all by people with a direct connection and link to those events. It gives the fictional events of the story a real world context, a nice and somewhat unique touch.
Although there have been a few little detours along the way, the story arc has essentially shown us the transformation of Virgil from victim to hero, from bystander to do-gooder. It took a tragic event,...

Four issues in and Bloodthirsty has been a great book so far, mixing up a big mish-mash of action, conspiracy, boo hiss bad guys, morally conflicted good guys, and a backdrop that can be both seedy and beautiful. Any one of those elements on their own is interesting, but throwing them all together into a book and making them not only work, but work really well, takes a lot of skill. You would never know Mark Landry is a novice comic book writer as he handles plot, pacing, and character so well. He also has a nice line in cliffhangers, each issue leaving us really wanting to pick up the next to see what is coming.
Last issue saw Virgil further develop into a heroic persona, fuelled by the grief of his brother’s death...

He also has a nice line in cliffhangers, each issue leaving us really wanting to pick up the next to see what is coming.
Last issue saw Virgil further develop into a heroic persona, fuelled by the grief of his brother’s death...

Young woman is raped by a group of men while on vacation. She slowly pulls herself together and seeks out brutal, violent revenge on her attackers.
Infamous film that was infamously bashed by Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel and rightfully so. A curio for some due to the film's reputation, but why bother? It's offensive in its treatment of women. Offensive in its treatment of a retarded character. Offensive in its presentation of an extended rape sequence. Offensive in its horrid production values. Offensive in its amateurish performances. Most offensive in its lack of logic or cringe worthy dialogue. I Spit on Your Grave is just a downright offensive film in every regard whether that's in its violence, in its attitude towards its characters or in the film's lack of technical finesse. An...

The ultimate in feminist revenge gets a Blu-ray release to coincide with the remake of the same. I guess I should cringe when those guys get theirs, but face it those hillbilly rapists deserve all they get. Jennifer Hills (Camille Keaton) travels from the big city to an isolated cabin in the country. She.s going to work on her novel in the secluded location. She asks for directions from gas station manager Johnny (Eron Tabor) and is eyed by Stanley (Anthony Nichols) and Andy (Gunter Kleemann) who hang out at the station. When she finds the cabin, her groceries are delivered by Matthew (Richard Pace), who is a bit slow so she treats him kindly so Matthew develops...

We are very giddy this week because a couple of titles that are near and dear to our hearts will be available for you folks to take home.
While we had gone on ad nauseam about the spectacular second Paranormal Activity demonic home invasion film, you can now watch it in your own house over and over again. Your home surveillance camera videos may never be the same again! We are also treated to not one, but both I Spit on Your Graves - the original from the 1970s and the new remake of a gritty film which may be disturbing to some but nonetheless empowering.
The other titles released this week from our genre may not be as beloved, but they are worth mentioning for the completists out there. Maybe they make better sense when viewed in the safety of one's home.
