Exclusive: Alibi Media has snapped up film rights to Juan Gabriel Vásquez’s acclaimed 2014 novel The Sound of Things Falling, tapping House of Gucci screenwriter Roberto Bentivegna to direct the project as his first feature, from his own script.
The novel published by Penguin Group imprint Riverhead Books follows Antonio Yammara, who after being injured in a shootout and witnessing the murder of the mysterious Ricardo Laverde, decides to find out who his friend really was, beginning a journey into the dark heart of Colombia’s drug trade. What follows is an investigation into a dead man’s past, and a pilgrimage to unlock that most elusive thing: the truth.

The Bridge, the Shine America-Fox International Channels co-produced adaptation of the Scandinavian crime drama series Bron, represents what Rich Ross described as “a perfect example” of the Fox units’ concerted push into scripted fare. The Shine America CEO made his remarks Thursday local time during his keynote at the Australian Subscription Television and Radio Association conference in Sydney. Ross showed a two-minute clip of the remake, Shine’s first U.S. drama series, which stars Demián Bichir and Diane Kruger and is set to debut on FX in July and internationally on Fic entertainment channels. Ross called The Bridge an ideal mating of “international talent with terrific content formatted from another territory”. Shine America is launching Shine Hispanic & Latin America, a new division that will develop and produce original Spanish-language content for the U.S. and Latin American marketplaces. Veteran Colombian TV producer and executive Cristina Palacio has been named president of the new division, reporting to Shine America CEO Rich Ross. Palacio, most recently the founder and President of Colombian-based TV production company Be-tv, will oversee new Shine America offices in Miami, Fla., and Bogota, Colombia, with programming distributed through Shine International. “With Shine Hispanic & Latin America we are looking to further develop and distribute both scripted and un-scripted programming to the rapidly growing Spanish-language marketplace,” says Ross. “Cristina’s vast experience in production and distribution make her the ideal person to lead our new team.” Last fall, Shine America produced its first Spanish-language series Minuto Para Ganar, a Spanish-language version of NBC’s Minute It Win It, for MundoFox.
