Steve Harley, singer for the British glam rock act Cockney Rebel and their 1975 hit “Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me),” has died at the age of 73.
Harley’s family confirmed his death in Suffolk, England Sunday in a statement (via The Guardian), “We are devastated to announce that our wonderful husband and father has passed away peacefully at home, with his family by his side. The birdsong from his woodland that he loved so much was singing for him. His home has been filled with the sounds and laughter of his four grandchildren.

One of the more notable features of James Gunn's 2014 film "Guardians of the Galaxy," the tenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was its rockin' soundtrack of familiar 1970s hits. The film's main character, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), was abducted from Earth as a boy and raised among space aliens. One of the only things he kept as a vestige of his life on Earth was a Walkman and a mixtape that was gifted to him by his dying mother. The tape contained "Hooked on a Feeling" by Blue Swede, David Bowie's "Moonage Daydream," The Runaway's "Cherry Bomb," and Rupert Holmes' oft-reviled "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)." Peter Quill's mother had interesting taste. Norman Greenbaum's popular pick "Spirit in the Sky" played in the film's preview and is on its soundtrack record, but isn't actually played in the final cut of the movie.

“Oh! Darling” was released in 1969 on Abbey Road, the last album The Beatles recorded. Written and sung by Paul McCartney, the song was a nod to a more ‘50s sound, despite all the experimental, futuristic work the band had produced in recent years. It’s one of McCartney’s best-performed songs. But John felt he could have done it better.

The Avalanches have teamed with Leon Bridges for their new track “Interstellar Love,” the latest single from the Australian duo’s upcoming album We Will Always Love You.
The track features a sample of Alan Parsons Project’s “Eye in the Sky” and is inspired — like the album itself — by the story of astronomer Carl Sagan and his wife Ann Druyan capturing their romance on tape and sending it into space as part of the Voyager’s Golden Record.
“Leon is an incredible singer, with just the most beautiful voice.

For more than 20 years, Chilean filmmaker Sebastián Lelio has been trying to figure out a way to use the Alan Parsons Project's "Time" in one of his movies. "When I made my first short film in 1996, I tried to buy that song and I couldn't afford it," the filmmaker says of the British art-rock band's 1981 easy-listening hit, a celestial lament about a love affair torn asunder by distance and circumstance. "I have loved it forever. I consider it a masterpiece. It perfectly combines human [connection] with a cosmic backdrop." Told that...

It was 50 years ago today, The Beatles’ last show went through the roof.
The Beatles blasted the London financial district for their last lunchtime concert. The Beatles ended their concert history the way it began. Before the four Beatles were fab, there were five of them and they played to swinging teens during their midday breaks at the famous Cavern Club and the Casbah, an obscure performance space painted in day-glo colors by art students Stuart Sutcliff and John Lennon, in Liverpool. This was before and after the band pulled eight hour live shifts in Hamburg, Germany.
For their last concert, on Jan. 30, 1969, The Beatles took to the roof of Apple headquarters at 3 Savile Row and sang for their last supper, well, lunch. Starting at midday, Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Star and a keyboardist friend they’d known since their early touring days, Billy Preston,...

Back at the beginning of July in the daily Briefs, I started the Official snicks Top 100 Lost Hits of The 80's, spotlighting the 100 greatest minor hits of that decade. The songs you don't hear on any 80's nostalgia show. Songs that missed the top ten, or top twenty ... or top forty, and over the last five months I hope some of these forgotten gems may have rung a long dormant bell, or for younger readers, provided a pop music history lesson.
Here is the complete list, including my favorite lost song of the decade. Thank you for taking this 80's road trip with me ... but it's not over yet! I'll be featuring a new Lost Hit once a week in the Wednesday Briefs, so the history lesson will continue!
Let the countdown commence, and remember ... keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars!

Remember in high school when you and your friends spent that Saturday night trying to sync up "The Wizard of Oz" with Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon? (Press play on the third MGM lion roar, man!) Well, now someone has gone ahead and put the two together on YouTube.
First posted by YouTube user Hisashibeta on April 18, and recently unearthed by the website I Heart Chaos, the clip -- entitled "Dark Side of the Rainbow" -- brings the denizens of Oz together with Pink Floyd. (If you've never seen this and have 101 minutes to kill, watching is highly recommended.)
Of course, the combination is nothing but a coincidence, despite what you may believe.
"It was an American radio guy who pointed it out to me," Alan Parsons, the Dark Side of the Moon audio engineer, told Rolling Stone. "It's such a non-starter, a complete load of eyewash.

Normally I'm not a fan of these gimmicky wedding videos, but this one happens to have a tangential relationship to the sports and it's a bit of a slow day. Also, I need a break between racism posts. Anywho, here's former Chicago Bulls announcer Ray Clay giving the "lineup" for the Jaquette wedding. Clay rose to fame when the Michael Jordan-era Bulls were dominating the NBA, and he's also the only person in history to use an Alan Parsons Project song tastefully.
Here's the video, which is a few days old. Maybe The Office can turn it into a storyline? Is that show still on?

The sequel to "Anchorman" hasn't even started filming yet, but the movie has already spawned multiple teaser trailers.
The Channel 4 Action News team -- the four male members of it, anyway -- will be back in 2013 in "Anchorman: The Legend Continues." The two teasers, which you can watch below, feature Will Ferrell, David Koechner, Paul Rudd and Steve Carell reprising their characters, with '70s threads and facial hair mostly intact. Christina Applegate, however, isn't around.
We are a little curious, though, as to when the sequel takes place. The end of "Anchorman" flashed forward to Ron (Ferrell) and Veronica (Applegate) anchoring a national news show, but judging by the continued presence of Ron's trademark red suit, part two will still cover the '70s.
But we're probably overthinking things a little. Better for now to watch these four guys be inappropriately funny while the Alan Parsons Project's "Sirius" plays.

This past weekend, a new teaser trailer for Adam McKay’s highly anticipated comedy sequel Anchorman 2 played in theaters, but not many people got to check it out because it was attached to The Dictator and paying movie ticket prices and sitting through over an hour of Sacha Baron Cohen’s stale act just to see a few seconds of Anchorman goodness wasn’t a proposition for the weak at heart. But everybody who missed out can stop crying and start rejoicing, because not only has that teaser trailer now hit the net, but there’s also an alternate version of said trailer being hosted over at Funny or Die. Both trailers have a similar set-up: the guys strike iconic poses, get a chance to riff a funny line, and liberal use is made of that Alan Parsons Project song that Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat used to come out to in the ’80s and the Chicago...

Birthday Shoutouts! Jonah Hill is 28, and Alan Parsons is 63. The Alan Parsons Project was a hugely underrated group in the 70's and 80's. Here's my top five: 5. "Games People Play," 4. "Time" 3. "Don't Answer Me," 2. Eye In The Sky," 1. "Prime Time," which also had a music video that scared the crap out of Wee Snicks.
HBO has canceled Hung, Bored To Death, and How To Make It In America, and in a welcome but somewhat surprising move, has renewed Enlightened for a second season. In ratings news, the season finale of Terra Nova was up slightly, while Fear Factor tumbled 30% from last week. Below you can see gay friends Daniel and James do something really disgusting.
In a move that guarantees that whatever little interest I had in X Factor will be completely snuffed out, Steve Jones will apparently not be...

Captain Kirk is headed back to space.
William Shatner, the Emmy winning TV icon, announced the track listing and details for his new space-inspired cover album, Searching For Major Tom. The album will feature a large number of heavy metal covers, as well as songs by U2, Frank Sinatra, Queen and Pink Floyd.
Shatner has had a storied music career, producing confusing, parodied yet somehow enlightening song covers and original bits over the past 40+ years. His first album, The Transformed Man, raised eyebrows with its bizarre covers, which, in what would become his trademark style, boasted dramatic readings of lyrics over music. HIs best known track was a recording of Sonny & Cher's "Mr. Tambourine Man." Check out Urlesque's ranking of his ten best cover songs here.
Shatner announced the album via Twitter back in February.

To think his career began by making tea and coffee at Abbey Road studios over 40 years ago, is almost unimaginable. But that's how veteran engineer, producer and recording artist Alan Parsons first started finely tuning his ears to the elements of great sound. Where do you go when your first music industry gig is with the Beatles? As he shares on this boomitude.com podcast, it isn't something you forget all too easily and in his case, it was just the beginning of a long and fruitful road marked with significant sonic guideposts. Alan is a unique artist in that he is an innately proficient recording engineer, producer and musician with a three tiered career that has made music history on each level. As the engineer of one of the most sonic-centric and best selling recordings of all time, Pink...
