Every August for the last four years, Lorna Luft has called her agents to remind them that it's time to start booking her into a year-end production of the stage version of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas." Since 2004 this theatrical adaptation of the beloved 1954 movie has been a seasonal staple in regional theaters—and even made stops on Broadway in 2008 and 2009. Luft, who played in the show's United Kingdom premiere and other productions, wouldn't miss appearing in it somewhere at the holiday season. After all, the unique performance period always spans her birthday (Nov. 21), Thanksgiving, and Christmas Eve. And since her fellow principals—James Clow (in the Bing Crosby role), Tony Yazbeck (Danny Kaye), Meredith Patterson (Vera-Ellen), and Jill Paice (Rosemary Clooney)—director Marc Bruni, and choreographer Randy Skinner have crisscrossed among various mountings of the show, all know it and one another well. "It's our family," says Luft,...

Every week I’m getting more and more impressed with CBS’s Person of Interest. As a rule of thumb, I much prefer serialised dramas as apposed to procedural (show’s where the story continues week after week instead of singular weekly plots), the reason being; the one-off stories and characters have a tendency to meld together in my mind, most becoming forgotten or meshed together. You start referring to episodes as “the one with the…” a death trap for any show by my reckoning. So far, I haven’t found this to be the case with Person of Interest. I suppose I owe credit (or blame) to Executive Producer J. J. Abrams. His other show Fringe is a mix of serial and procedural and I guess this has slowly worn down my rejection of the procedural format. Of course it doesn’t help when each...

'Billy Elliot,' Original London Cast, Decca BroadwayAfter a three-year wait, the London hit has reached New York and looks to repeat its effervescent success on Broadway. There will be no local cast recording, as the West End version is considered completely representative. Haydn Gwynne, imported for the New York production, is heard here, but the Billy — one of the initial three — is Liam Mower. The group number "Solidarity" is solid; so is "Expressing Yourself." The common wisdom has it that composer Elton John (Lee Hall is the lyricist) writes better when rocking, but he upends that canard on a bonus CD by turning "Electricity" into a superlative show tune.'The Gig,' Original York Theatre Company Cast, Jay RecordsThe musical comedy gods finally smile on Douglas J. Cohen's adaptation of Frank D. Gilroy's film tribute to male bonding and middle-age crises. This long-overdue recording is another step in establishing the tuner,...

Snow will fill the Marquis Theatre this holiday season as Irving Berlin's White Christmas comes to Broadway for a limited run, following productions in San Francisco, Boston, Detroit, Toronto, Los Angeles, and St. Paul, Minn. David Ives has adapted the script from the popular 1954 film, fondly remembered for its timeless spirit and melodies, including the title song — the best selling record in history. Many other Berlin favorites, including "Blue Skies" and "I Love a Piano," will be interpolated into the tale. Ives and the cast describe it as a reinvention rather than a revival. The story concerns two showbiz duos — a male song-and-dance team and a sister act — who fall in love and help save a Vermont inn. The show boasts a full orchestra and a 32-member cast. Back Stage spoke with cast members Stephen Bogardus (Bob Wallace), Kerry O'Malley (Betty Haynes), Jeffry Denman (Phil Davis), and Meredith Patterson...
