2022 has been, yet again, another fantastic year for Dtv (or more accurately “direct to market”) movies. There have been some great films on VOD, streaming (yes I’m including streaming premieres this year too) and on digital so, as per previous years here on Nerdly, I’ve compiled a list of My personal top 10 of the best direct-to-market titles of the year, be they VOD, streaming or digital downloads. The only criteria is that we’ve covered the film here on Nerdly And I’ve seen the film myself. This list takes in all the films that never made it to cinemas with the list in order of release date not preference, with the month of release listed alongside each film. And man was this list Hard to cut down to just ten films… as it is each and every year!

Stars: Paul O’Brien, Georgia Walters, Kristy Wordsworth, Teressa Liane, Hafedh Dakhlaoui, Cassandra Magrath, Amy Christian, Natasha Maymon, Amir Aizenstros, Josh Karlik, Luke Davis, Igor Bulanov | Written and Directed by Corey Pearson
Written and directed by Corey Pearson, The Spy Who Never Dies is a quirky action rom-com about an international spy named Brad (Paul O’Brien), who’s sick of saving the world and is looking for more from life, in fact just a “normal” life. A life with no guns, no villains, no recovering plutonium. A serendipitous event (as in Brad stealing a dog post-assassination) has Brad meeting a seemingly normal girl named Veronica (Georgia Walters) a smart, cute, vet. Veronica has a congenital heart condition, any excessive elevation in her adrenaline and heart rate could end her life. On top of that, she is allergic to bees, so a recipe for disaster… probably.

There’s an awkward white-saviour dimension to Corey Pearson’s revenge thriller – but it picks up speed in a tuk-tuk
International assassins are well-placed to thrive in a work-from-home gig economy. That’s the main take-home message of this film, in which an Australian hitman uses an Uber-like phone app to hire sniper backup for a planned shoot-out. That, and the fact that nine years after Gareth Evans’s The Raid stormed its way to international accolades, Indonesia remains a cracking location to shoot an independent action thriller.
One key difference is that while Evans’s film made a star of local martial artist Iko Uwais, this one has imported Home and Away’s Paul O’Brien for lead role of taciturn tactical genius, Ryan “Message Man” Teller. This both introduces an awkward white saviour dimension to the otherwise entertaining revenge plot and invites the sneaking suspicion that Australian writer-director Corey...

Jessica Falkholt in ‘Harmony: The Five Frequencies Saga – Part 1’
Producer, financier, market researcher and distributor Peter Drinkwater is taking an innovative, intensively market research-based approach to creating, producing and marketing Australian and Us films.
Drinkwater’s Cowlick Entertainment Group has set up an investment fund which backed Corey Pearson’s supernatural drama Harmony: The Five Frequencies Saga – Part 1, which opened in Australian cinemas last weekend.
That will be followed by I Am Woman, the Helen Reddy biopic directed by Unjoo Moon, which Goalpost Pictures plans to shoot in Australia, Los Angeles and NY later this year.
Also on Cowlick’s slate is The Stand-In, a romantic comedy which will star Drew Barrymore in the dual roles of a washed-up movie star who is busted for a tax evasion and hires her unemployed, adoring stand-in to do community service in her place.

‘Ladies in Black.’
The Australian titles released in cinemas this year including holdovers will overtake the calendar 2017 total in the next week or so, boosted by Bruce Beresford’s Ladies in Black.
Through the end of September the Oz films and feature docs had grossed $47.8 million, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia (Mpdaa), within spitting distance of last year’s $49.4 million.
After a second weekend drop of just 10 per cent Ladies in Black’s takings have increased by nearly $800,000 to $5.97 million, including $361,000 on Tuesday, so the 1950s-set comedy-drama distributed by Sony is on course to surpass $12 million.
Distributed by Universal Pictures as an alternate content release, Mark Joffe’s biopic Jimmy Barnes: Working Class Boy rang up $823,000, ranking as the year’s second biggest feature doc behind Paul Damian Williams’ Gurrumul, which made $984,000.
