Glynis Johns, the upbeat leading lady with the British charm who starred as the spirited feminist mother Winifred Banks in Mary Poppins, has died. She was 100.
Johns lived in West Hollywood and died Thursday of natural causes at an assisted living facility in the area, her manager, Mitch Clem, told The Hollywood Reporter.
A multitalented actress, dancer, pianist and singer, Johns earned a best supporting actress Oscar nomination for playing the widowed saloon and hotel owner Mrs. Firth in Fred Zinnemann’s Australia-set The Sundowners (1960).
Plus, she memorably sang “Send in the Clowns,” which Stephen Sondheim wrote just for her, in her Tony Award-winning performance as Desiree Armfeldt in the original 1973 production of A Little Night Music.

Francesca Cappucci, who spent more than a decade as a popular entertainment and music reporter at Kabc-tv in Los Angeles, has died. She was 64.
Cappucci died March 30 at Huntington Hospital in Pasadena after being diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic lung cancer in July, her older son, Ian Lyndon, told The Hollywood Reporter. She never smoked and “was an advocate for wellness and ran and exercised every day, that’s why [her illness] was such a shock,” he said.
Out of the blue, Quentin Tarantino named the glamorous Italian movie star wife of Leonardo DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton after her in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019).
Cappucci and the filmmaker never met, Ian said, and she was “blown away” when she and his brother, Will, saw the movie on the big screen for the first time. (The character was played by Chilean actress Lorenza Izzo.)

Critics of the Hollywood film and TV industry like to joke that the business loves nothing more than to give itself awards. Yet industry pundits will have the last laugh when the Critics Choice Assn. holds its popular 27th annual awards gala. Originally scheduled for Jan. 9, the show has been postponed due to Covid-19 concerns. A statement from the organization states that they are “in regular communication with L.A. County Public Health officials, and we are currently working diligently to find a new date during the upcoming awards season in which to host our annual gala in-person with everyone’s safety and health remaining our top priority.”
What started as an untelevised event decades ago during which membership awarded their top picks in a multitude of film categories (television awards have only been included since 2011), the evening is now a full-fledged star-studded affair that will be broadcast on both the CW and TBS.

Valerie Harper, the multiple-Emmy-winning sitcom star whose role as the somewhat neurotic Rhoda Morgenstern made her one of television’s biggest and most beloved actors in the 1970s, died today. She was 80 and had been suffering from various cancers for a number of years.
Her family told Kabc-tv entertainment reporter George Pennacchio that Harper had been in a coma for a while before succumbing,
The veteran TV and stage actress was best known for playing sidekick Rhoda Morgenstern on CBS The Mary Tyler Moore Show, then taking the character into her own popular spinoff, Rhoda.
She also starred in the 1980s sitcom, Valerie, which — thanks to some head-butting over creative control with the show producers – saw Harper’s character killed off as an explanation for her exiting the show. It then morphed into Valerie’s Family and later was retitled The Hogan Family.
Harper also had recurring roles on The Office and The Simpsons.

If your real mom isn’t going to cheer you on during your debut on “Dancing With the Stars,” the next best thing is probably Allison Janney.
Tonya Harding was lucky enough to have the “I, Tonya” star as her special guest at the live season 26 premiere of “DWTS: Athletes” Monday night. You know, the actress who won a best supporting actress Oscar in March for her portrayal of the former Olympic skater’s mother, Lavona Golden.
Janney cheered on Harding during her performance alongside her companion for the evening, actress Mckenna Grace, who played a younger version of Harding in “I, Tonya,” and the film’s screenwriter, Steven Rogers.

“I, Tonya” starred Margot Robbie in the titular role and followed the skater’s personal life and career before and after the 1994 attack on rival Nancy Kerrigan, and Harding’s ex-husband Jeff Gillooly’s (Sebastian Stan) involvement in the hit.

The Heat is a brilliant move at getting people into theaters, and the best part of that statement is that by “people,” I mean women (and those they’ll bring with them). It’s a brilliant move because the movie industry is trying like hell to put off the death of theaters, and they are changing their game in a variety of ways as desperation sets in.
For decades, we’ve known how and where to go for half-baked “pulls.” For men, we put Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzeneggar, or giant robots in a film, and release a trailer that offers little in the way of plot description, and a lot of explosions. For women, we pick a hot guy and have a woman cry in the trailer. Of course, there are variants. We might have a really stupid comedy involving a bunch of guys who are probably stoned, and a scantily-clad babe on the poster…...
