Calls for pay equity continued at the 26th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards (Cdga), held on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at NeueHouse Hollywood and hosted by Wendi McLendon-Covey. Winners were announced in nine categories, including a new one for excellence in costume illustration. Also new this year was recognition of the primary assistant costume designer, who received an award alongside the head costume designer in each category.
The show marked the debut of the Vanguard Spotlight Award to celebrate an influential performance artist, underlining the breadth of costume design beyond film and television. Costume designer-stylist Shirley Kurata, who styled Billie Eilish’s music video for the Oscar-nominated Barbie song “What Was I Made For?,” presented the award, emphasizing Eilish’s fashion focus on sustainability, individuality and a vegan lifestyle.

From Mary Tyler Moore’s black capri pants to the waist-cinching corsets on Bridgerton, the costumes on television’s hottest shows over the past 70-plus years have influenced what we wear more than viewers may realize. That’s the premise of Hal Rubenstein’s just-released book, which is sure to spawn an escapist deep dive by even the most casual TV fan.
Dressing the Part: Television’s Most Stylish Shows (Harper, $36) explores the costume design of 50 high-profile TV series, from I Love Lucy and The Donna Reed Show in the 1950s, to Downton Abbey, Sex and the City, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and others. But it was Bridgerton that inspired the idea for the book. “Harper wanted to do a book on Bridgerton’s costume design, and my feeling was that it was a period costume show that [didn’t relate yet],” Rubenstein told The Hollywood Reporter. “I thought we would see the ramifications...

In a sign of its strength, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” pulled off an upset in the fantasy/sci-fi race over “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Those films round out the Oscar race for Best Costume Design. The other CDG winner was the contemporary film “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.”

At the 25th Costume Designers Guild Awards (CDGAs) on Feb. 27 at L.A.’s Fairmont Century Plaza, special honorees will include costume designers Deborah L. Scott (Avatar: The Way of Water) and Rachael M. Stanley (Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Ally McBeal); Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Oscar nominee Angela Bassett, who will receive the Spotlight Award; and Bette Midler, who will be recognized with the Distinguished Collaborator Award.
Midler jokes with THR that the Costume Designers Guild award recognizes her “willingness to stand in front of a mirror for hours on end! What could be more delightful?” All kidding aside, Midler continues, “A great costume is like a second skin; you feel as if you belong in it. It’s very freeing because it provides so much information to the audience, and you don’t have to work so hard.”

Four of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the 2023 Oscars reaped bids on January 12 for the Costume Designers Guild Awards.
“Babylon,””Elvis,” and “The Woman King” contend here in the period picture category against “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” and “Don’t Worry Darling,” which rank seventh and 21st in our Oscar odds respectively.
The Oscar frontrunner, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” vies here in the sci-fi/fantasy race against “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Hocus Pocus 2” and “Thor: Love and Thunder.”
Our fifth predicted Oscar nominee, “The Fabelmans,” can take heart that the guild often overlook films that go on to contend at the Academy Awards. Indeed the 2020 Oscar winner for Best Costume Design, “Little Women,” was snubbed by the CDG as were two of the other nominees, “The Irishman” and “Joker.” The guild honored one of the other academy nominees, “Jojo Rabbit.

“Cruella” (Disney),” “Dune” (Warner Bros.), and “Coming 2 America” (Amazon Prime) were the big film winners Wednesday night at the 24th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards. “Cruella” designer and two-time Oscar winner Jenny Beavan won for period; Denis Villeneuve’s epic “Dune” took sci-fi honors for costume designers Jacqueline West and Robert Morgan; and Oscar winner Ruth Carter (“Black Panther”) earned the contemporary prize for “Coming 2 America.”

For years, costume designers have been fighting for pay equity — an issue thrown into sharp relief by the difference in remuneration between the largely female Costume Designers Guild and the predominantly male members of the Art Directors Guild.
But an equally growing concern bubbling away under the surface has been a lack of costume designers’ involvement in the off-screen monetization of their designs. As Variety recently reported, when Disney collaborated with fashion brand Rag & Bone on an officially licensed “Cruella” collection to tie in with the new live-action film, “Cruella” costume designer Jenny Beavan didn’t see a dime. In fact, she didn’t even know a collaboration was in the works until she spotted the news on social media.
Now, costume designers want change. The objective is to be seen as an asset not only to the aesthetic of the film but, more holistically, in marketing, promotion and box office success.

When Darren Barnet first auditioned for his role on Netflix’s Ya series “Never Have I Ever,” the name of his character was just “Paxton Hall.”
But when creators Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher found out that he had Japanese heritage, they asked the actor if he’d be interested in incorporating that into his character. And so, Paxton Hall-Yoshida was born — the good-looking jock with a heart of gold who becomes the object of protagonist Devi Vishwakumar’s (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) affection in the first season of the coming-of-age comedy.
When wardrobe designer Salvador Pérez Jr. heard Barnet speaking Japanese to assistant director Yuko Ogata, Fisher approached him to see if he’d be down to incorporating his heritage into the character. “I was like ‘Let’s do it!'” Barnet told TheWrap in a video-chat interview. “And the next thing I knew, I had a hyphenated Yoshida at the end.

The 40-year-old comedian and presenter accessorized with a yellow metal clutch, and piled on the Chopard diamonds, including a necklace featuring 78.46-carats of marquise-cut diamonds and 46.33-carats of round-shaped diamonds. As for her glam, Kaling (mom to 2-year-old daughter Katherine Swati) chose sultry metallic brown eye shadow, a matching glossy lip and loose curls.

Mindy Kaling has always been a style unicorn, on and off screen. The Mindy Project star has spent the past six seasons incorporating bright colors and mixed patterns into her looks, with the guidance of the show's costume designer, Salvador Perez. It may be the show's last hoorah, but that doesn't mean the style has to stop. Consider this your time to find wardrobe inspiration to last a lifetime. After six seasons, it's hard to imagine Mindy's character without Salvador's designs. Initially, however, the designer turned the offer down—multiple times. In an interview with E! News, Mindy shared that it took a lot of convincing to bring Salvador on board. The funny girl had to...

Shooting the final season of The Mindy Project may be bittersweet for the cast, but Mindy Kaling’s pregnancy has made it that little bit more fun.
“It’s fun for me because I like to eat and she’s in a great mode for that right now,” Kaling’s costar and director Ike Barinholtz told reporters at the PaleyFest preview of the show’s sixth and last season. “Oh God, me and her and David Stassen just ate a bag of Tapatio Doritos last week. Whatever she wants to eat were going to jump on board.”

Say it ain't so! Our beloved Mindy Project is nearing its end, but E! News caught up with Mindy Kaling and the show's costume designer, Salvador Perez, to talk fashion and final goodbyes. "It's getting a little sentimental and sad actually," Kaling confessed about the last month of shooting. However, fashion fans will certainly have something to look forward to during the show's last hoorah. "Sal is pulling out all the stops for the last few episodes for costumes," Kaling added. In fact, while supporting Perez at his costume exhibit at the Paley Center last night, Kaling couldn't help but think back to when she first convinced him to design costumes...

Mindy Kaling’s hopes for “The Mindy Project” were rather simple at the beginning: Let it be funny. Now that the comedy has hit 100 episodes as of Tuesday, Kaling believes she she has accomplished that goal.
“I don’t think I’ve changed that much. I was certainly more nervous when we started just because I wanted to stay on the air,” Kaling told IndieWire. “I didn’t know how densely packed with jokes it would be. I’m really proud of that. Coming from ‘The Office,’ I knew that you can’t really predict what is going to work and what isn’t at the very beginning. You have to just let the show reveal itself to you as it airs.”

There are 19,000 members of the Television Academy who vote on the Primetime Emmy Awards. Here are just a few of Los Angeles locations where, over the last few months, they might have found their votes courted by networks and studios:
The Silver Lake Dog Park A fashion show at the Grove A popular 3rd Street lunch spot A pop-up screening room hosted in an Airstream trailer Election Day polling places A cemetery
In fact, since the beginning of Emmy campaign season (an ill-defined period of time) it’s been a circus of events and stunts meant to get voters’ attention. (In fact, there was a literal carnival, courtesy of Fox, for “Grease: Live.”) Looking at the calendar of an Academy member, there was hardly a single night in May and June that didn’t include at least one “For Your Consideration” event, and sometimes multiple ones clashed for attention.

We're having some major '80s flashbacks. Major League Baseball's official Twitter account has treated fans to a hilarious video starring a few players from the Kansas City Royals. What goes down in said video? Oh you know, just a few bros posing together in some throwback all-denim looks for a photo shoot of awkward family pics. No big deal. nullRoyals' teammates Eric Hosmer, Lorenzo Cain, Jarrod Dyson and Salvador Perez go from chilling on the field in their uniforms to hitting a dressing room to change into tight, high-waisted jeans, white turtlenecks, and denim, button-up shirts. We have to admit: the 2015 World Series champs look pretty damn good. It's not...

Mindy Kaling totally stunned while presenting at the 2016 Costume Designers Guild Awards on Tuesday night, but she kept it real beforehand, proving it's not all glitz and glam ahead of stepping onto a red carpet. There’s no denying it: Mindy’s mom style is perfect. From the moment she comes home from the hospital in a star-print jumpsuit and braids, she is making mommyhood look like a delectable lifestyle brand. Costume designer Salvador Perez is not kidding around. That jumpsuit is some thousand-dollar Vivienne Westwood, for instance. (Though it can be yours today in select sizes for $445 on TheOutnet.com. You’re welcome.) I would 1,000 percent read Mindy’s mommy blog and gladly shell out for her subsequent book of stolen recipes.Danny, however, is taking his daddy style in a little bit of a different direction, “babyproofing” the house by getting rid of the TV and internet, among other things. “Hey, did you find my gun?” Mindy asks innocently.
