Joining the writers room during the fifth season of Gilmore Girls required sitting down with a pen and paper to take notes on all the previous storylines and “lots of coffee,” or so writer Stan Zimmerman reflects in The Girls: From Golden to Gilmore.
In his memoir, to be published by Indigo River Publishing on Feb. 13, Zimmerman chronicles his time working on the series, as well as his journey to finding success as a writer, producer, director and playwright, working on such shows as The Golden Girls and Roseanne. Featuring journal entries throughout, The Girls also details Zimmerman’s relationships with varied stars, including Lily Tomlin, Sandra Bernhard, Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel and the Golden Girls cast.

As much as we try to pretend it's not, television recasting is almost always a big deal. When stage performers get recast in a play, or characters get written out between movie sequels, it's bearable because these types of stories have a natural end point that helps audiences feel some closure about the character who's gone. Yet for TV shows, which encourage binge-watching that blurs the lines between seasons, the change can be jarring and distracting.
The spectrum of effective recasts isn't so much from terrible to great as it is from wildly noticeable to slightly unobtrusive. Whether it's the sudden appearance of scruffy, brown-eyed Daario Naharis on "Game of Thrones," the revolving door of Bobby Drapers on "Mad Men," or the depressing Aunt Viv switch-up on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," recasts usually leave something to be desired.
Despite this, DC's Arrowverse has managed to pull off a couple successful recasts over the years,...

The Brady organization against gun violence is calling on Hollywood writers, directors and producers to examine onscreen gun violence and depictions of gun safety, asking the creative community to sign a pledge that’s already garnered more than 200 signatures of such names as Judd Apatow, Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Jimmy Kimmel and the writers of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”
“Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety,” the Brady pledge states, and goes on to ask writers, directors and producers to, whenever possible, to:

If the first seven episodes of the final season of “Supergirl” showed us anything, it’s that Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) was always meant to be part of the Super Friends. The good news is she’s here now, and thanks to a classic older sister pep talk from Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh), Lena isn’t going anywhere. And now that Kara’s been rescued, Lena will have her best friend back — with no drama attached, according to the showrunners.
“We’re looking at better days,” showrunner Robert Rovner told TheWrap in April. “Lena apologized to Kara in the season opener, and she goes about the first part of the season making amends for that, and is vital to the team in terms of helping them get Supergirl back. And so once Supergirl’s back, it’s their friendship, and [Lena’s] part of the team.

Kelly Olsen is ready to take up the shield
National City’s newest Guardian is coming. Azie Tesfai’s Kelly Olsen will be taking up the mantle from her brother in the back half of the final season of “Supergirl,” and she’s got a brand new look.
To refresh your memory: After James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) exited “Supergirl” in Season 5, fans immediately began hoping his sister Kelly would take the shield, having seen her briefly wield the weapon during “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” At the end of March, the “Supergirl” showrunners made it official, announcing that Tesfai would become Guardian in Season 6. This makes Kelly one-half of an official super couple, as her girlfriend Alex (Chyler Leigh) officially became Sentinel in the season premiere.
Of course, Kelly’s Guardian is going to look a lot different than James’ Guardian. Here’s your official first look at the hero’s new suit and shield.

Jessica Queller knows exactly what she’d like to see
As “Supergirl” nears the halfway point of its sixth and final season, fans are preparing to officially say goodbye to their favorite characters. But some are still holding out some hopes for any spin-off series — including “Supergirl” showrunner Jessica Queller.
In a conversation with TheWrap, co-showrunner Robert Rovner said there are no conversations regarding a spin-off show happening so far — but that doesn’t mean they aren’t open to it. “I wish!” Queller said with a laugh. “Call the bosses!”
And, if the call gets made, Queller knows exactly who she’d like to see in a spin-off. “I’m really attached to the Midvale girls, to the flashback episodes [with] young Kara and young Alex and young Cat Grant. I think that would be a great spin-off,” she said.

It’s been a long road but it’s official: Every one of the Super Friends now knows that Kara Danvers is Supergirl. Last week’s season premiere saw Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) make the decision to tell her girlfriend Kelly (Azie Tesfai) about her sister’s secret, and this week’s episode saw the aftermath of the reveal — but not the reveal itself.
Where just about every other character has had some form of conversation with Kara (Melissa Benoist) about her secret — some long and drawn out, others with a simple whip of her glasses or a jump off a building — the conversation between Alex and Kelly apparently happened off-screen, leaving some fans scratching their heads.
But, according to “Supergirl” showrunners Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner, there is a reason why it wasn’t a big to-do when it came to Kelly. Most of it came down to simply...

(Warning: Major spoilers ahead for the season six premiere of “Supergirl”)
The final season of “Supergirl” is starting off on a rough note for Supergirl herself. The final moments of the premiere saw Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) returned once again to the Phantom Zone, this time at the hands of Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer). And so the question for the beginning of this final season is simple: can the Super Friends get her back?
The odds may not be as dire as they seem. After all, they finally have a full team in their corner. Lena (Katie McGrath) is in on Kara’s secret now and making peace with it, simultaneously making Lena an invaluable, full-time asset to the team. And, based on the final moments of the premiere, Kelly Olsen will soon be in the know as well. Because now it’s official: Kelly is the last to know that Kara Danvers is Supergirl.

“Supergirl” is officially hanging up her cape.
In a joint decision, the CW and producers Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions have announced that the upcoming sixth season of “Supergirl” will be its last.
Production on the “Supergirl” curtain call is set to begin later this month, and the writers have already started developing storylines for the final 20 episodes, according to sources. The network is aiming to premiere the sixth and final season sometime in 2021.
News of “Supergirl”‘s demise also comes almost exactly four months after the season 5 finale. The series originally debuted on CBS back in Oct. 2015, before moving to CW from season 2 onward.
The most recent season continued to star Melissa Benoist as the titular heroine, who also happens to be Superman’s cousin. She addressed the show’s end via social media.

“Supergirl” will conclude with its upcoming sixth season, The CW announced Tuesday.
The broadcast network says that the creative team behind the Melissa Benoist-led superhero series — which will be the first “Arrowverse” series to come to an end since “Arrow” itself did last spring — “has started developing the storylines for the final 20 episodes” and Season 6 will begin production later this month.
“Supergirl” premiered in October 2015 on CBS before moving over to The CW for its second season the following fall. The CW plans to premiere the sixth and final season, which was pushed from the fall schedule due to Covid-related production delays, sometime in 2021.
Along with Benoist, Season 5 of “Supergirl” starred Chyler Leigh, Katie McGrath, Jesse Rath, Nicole Maines, Azie Tesfai, Andrea Brooks, Julie Gonzalo, Staz Nair and David Harewood, with guest star Jon Cryer.
Here’s the description for that batch of episodes, which ended in May:

Supergirl will be taking her last flight. The CW and producers Warner Bros TV and Berlanti Productions just announced that the drama series starring Melissa Benoist will conclude with the upcoming sixth season, set for premiere on the CW in 2021. It is the second series from the CW’s DC Arrowverse to come to an end following Arrow, which wrapped its eight-year run last season.
Production on all 2020-21 broadcast series was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. Additionally, Supergirl had been targeting a later start of production to accommodate the pregnancy of star Benoist. I hear the series is slated to begin filming in Vancouver next week, pending a deal with the local unions to comply with SAG’s testing guidelines, which has been a sticking point for a number of Hollywood productions there. The series would initially be filming around Benoist who would join the production later, I have heard.

Exclusive: Carly Wray, whose credits include Watchmen and Westworld, has closed an exclusive multi-year overall deal with Warner Bros Television.
Deadline understands that the deal is in the high seven figures across three years. Warner Bros beat out a number of other suitors for the agreement, which is understood to have closed just before the studio shut down production in March.
It comes as Wray’s previous overall deal with HBO expired at the end of last year. The new agreement will allow Wray to develop, write and produce for the premium cable network but will also broaden out the opportunities to include streaming service HBO Max as well as third-party networks and digital platforms.
Most recently, Wray worked on Westworld, the sci-fi drama from Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, and Damon Lindelof’s adaptation of Watchmen, which she was also a co-exec producer.

Supergirl is getting serious tonight. While half of the episode "Reality Bytes" is dedicated to crimes committed in a virtual world, the other half is grounded in the real-life issue of violence against trans people—an issue important to both Nia Nal and the actress and activist who plays her, Nicole Maines. Nia, also known as Dreamer, is TV's first trans superhero, and in tonight's episode, she comes up against a man who thinks the world doesn't need a superhero like her, and it causes her to spring into action in a way we haven't seen her do before. As Maines told us, it's a whole new side of the character. Showrunners Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller...

Supergirl becomes the third Arrowverse series to reach its 100th episode this weekend. And as is typical when a show hits this milestone, it’ll celebrate with a special outing that’ll both get nostalgic for what’s already happened and look ahead to what’s to come. Titled “It’s a Super Life,” this It’s a Wonderful Life takeoff will see Mister Mxyzptlk return and offer the Girl of Steel the chance to see how her life could’ve been had she made different choices. And, according to guest star Jeremy Jordan, the episode will really act as the end of a chapter for Supergirl.
Jordan has returned to the show as Winn Schott for the past three episodes and he spoke to EW about how much of a pleasure it was to shoot the 100th. He promised that “It’s a Super Life” is something of a...

Supergirl becomes the third Arrowverse series to reach its 100th episode next week, with – as is TV tradition – the milestone instalment of season 5 being marked with a very special storyline that’ll cast a nostalgic eye on the Girl of Steel’s journey so far. Specifically, three former stars of the show will be making a comeback for the hour.
Titled “It’s a Super Life,” you probably don’t need me to tell you that the episode will be a take-off on It’s a Wonderful Life, with Mr. Mxyzptlk returning to National City – with a new face, as Thomas Lennon is replacing season 2’s Peter Gadiot – to give Kara an offer she can’t refuse. And that offer is to go back in time and see if she can fix the mistakes of her past, including telling Lena Luthor her secret before Lex did and ruined their friendship.

Following Arrow and The Flash, Supergirl becomes the third Arrowverse series to hit 100 episodes next weekend, with the very special “It’s a Super Life.” As the title makes clear, the milestone installment of season 5 will draw inspiration from It’s a Wonderful Life, with a regenerated Mister Mxyzptlk allowing Kara the chance to view how her life could’ve gone if she had made different choices.
In other words, this is a way for the show to take a nostalgic look back at the Girl of Steel’s journey over the past five years, as well as getting a few old faces back for the occasion. Exclusive: The magical menace called Mxyzptlk is returning to National City. Thomas Lennon (The State) is set to recur as the mercurial trickster in the fifth season of the CW’s Supergirl.
Mxyzptlk, aka “Mxy,” is the impish, reality-bending trickster from the 5th Dimension, who previously visited National City to woo Kara Danvers, aka Supergirl, but created chaos in the process. British actor Peter Gadiot portrayed Mxyzptlk for that two-part Season 2 adventure, but the transition to Lennon is smoothed by the character’s handy reputation as a shape-shifter with an unpredictable nature.
Mxyzptlk (it’s pronounced “miks-yez-pit-əl-ik”) has a history of mischief dating back to 1944 in the pages of DC Comics, where the most familiar version of the character is as an eccentric, levitating imp with a purple-and-orange ensemble and matching bowler. Often portrayed as an exasperating pest to Superman, Mxyzptlk is daft but also dangerous given the Kryptonian vulnerability to magic.

Fox has given a put pilot commitment to Chain of Command, a one-hour drama from writer April Fitzsimmons, Jamie Lee Curtis, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. TV where Berlanti Prods is under a deal.
Written by Fitzsimmons from a story by Fitzsimmons and Curtis, Chain of Command revolves around a young Air Force investigator with radical crime-solving methodology who returns to her hometown to join a military task force that doesn’t want her, a family who has traumatized her, and must confront the secrets that drove her away.
Fitzsimmons and Curtis executive produce with Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter for Berlanti Prods. The project is a co-production of Warner Bros. TV and Fox Entertainment in association with Berlanti Productions.
At this point, there is no deal for Curtis to act but that is considered a possibility down the road.

Now that I sit back and think about it, I’ve really come to realize how past Arrowverse crossovers just haven’t affected Supergirl in the same way they have other DC TV series. More often than not, Kara Zor-El pops over to Earth-1 and helps her superhero friends dispatch whatever the threat may be, before going back home to Earth-38. But in the case of its sister shows, we’ve seen Legends of Tomorrow‘s Martin Stein meet his demise, not to mention Arrow‘s Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoak joining The Flash‘s Barry Allen and Iris West for a double wedding.
Obviously, that’ll soon change because “Crisis on Infinite Earths” will very much live up to its comic book counterpart which saw the multiverse concept thrown out the window in favor of one, streamlined universe. Actually, viewers more adept with the source material have been expecting...

NBC has given a put pilot order to “TriBeCa,” a family drama from Greg Berlanti and “Supergirl” showrunners Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner, TheWrap has learned.
Based on the Korean series “Sky Castle” from Jtbc, the one-hour drama is described as a sophisticated family drama set in New York’s most expensive Zip code. The series explores the inner lives of a group of families and the lengths they will go to ensure their children succeed, regardless of the cost.
A put pilot commitment means that the network has agreed to air the pilot, but does not guarantee the project will go to series. If the network chooses not to air the pilot, it will owe a financial penalty to the studio.

In the Supergirl Season 4 finale, we first heard whispers of Leviathan. In the episode's final moments, an older woman approached Eve, telling her that: "Leviathan is everywhere. Leviathan is everyone. And Leviathan is coming." For her part, Eve looked terrified, the scene suggesting she has been under Leviathan's control for a long while.

In the view of this writer, Supergirl has yet to recapture the glory of its first two seasons. The show has had its ups and downs in the time since, but bright spots such as Jon Cryer’s incredible performances as Lex Luthor aren’t always enough to make up for the producers going full-on Lisa Simpson by using their prime time slot as a political soapbox.
If you don’t believe me, then take a gander at the comments section of pretty much any Supergirl discussion on social media, and you’ll see at least a few people expressing discontent with the heavily political direction. As I’ve said in the past, having a strong moral center isn’t necessarily mutually exclusive with whichever way you lean on the political spectrum, something Hollywood would care to take note of.

Whenever any TV series endures for an extended period of time, it’s only expected that not every member of the cast stick it out until the end. Case in point: only Tom Welling and Allison Mack appeared in all ten seasons of Smallville, with most of their colleagues moving on to other projects before the journey to becoming Superman reached its conclusion.
Staying on the subject of shows focused on Kryptonians, Supergirl is about to lose another longtime member of its own cast, that being Mehcad Brooks. Having been around since the pilot episode originally aired, we fully expect for fans to lament the departure of the Arrowverse’s iteration of James Olsen, who also suited up as the Guardian.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Brooks will bounce at some point during the first half of season 5. Details are being kept under wraps, but the door is said to be left open for his return.

The “circle of life,” The Lion King taught us, means that as one Supergirl actor returns, one must exit. Or something to that effect.
On the heels of the news that Jeremy Jordan will be returning as Winn for a spell in the second half of Season 5, EW.com is reporting that original cast member Mehcad Brooks will be leaving the CW series this fall.

Kara Danvers gets a new look in Supergirl Season 5. Now the CW has provided a hi-res look at Sdcc 2019.
Supergirl Season 5 will be flying onto our media screens before we know it, and the Woman of Steel has a whole new look. No, we're not talking about Kara's new bangs (though they are noteworthy). We're referring to the new costume Supergirl will have in the upcoming season, recently previewed by Melissa Benoist on the actress' Instagram page. Check it out...

Yep, Supergirl is trading in the skirt for some pants, which, frankly, are probably much more comfortable during those high-flying adventures (not to mention during the Vancouver winter). Benoist previously mentioned the new costume in an interview with Kevin Smith conducted a few days ago...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains key details about tonight’s Season 4 finale of Supergirl on The CW.
The Season 4 finale of Supergirl packed quite a punch tonight as Melissa Benoist’s Girl of Steel finally squared off against Lex Luthor, the malevolent mastermind of Metropolis as played here by returning guest star Jon Cryer with condescending sneer and big-brain brio. The returning guest star had hinted in recent days that the finale would not only reveal the staggering breadth of Luthor’s evil plans but also illuminate the true depths of his hatred for Superman, Supergirl and all things Kryptonian. The episode, “The Quest for Peace,” (directed by Jesse Warn off a script by Rob Wright & Derek Simon) certainly delivered on that front. “He’s evil, I knew that, you knew that, but I was surprised at how far he takes it with his plans.”

Even though Supergirl has rightfully placed much of the focus on the titular character herself, I can’t help admitting that it’s gifted us with what have arguably been some of the best interpretations of Superman and Lex Luthor in live action. In my view, Tyler Hoechlin’s Man of Steel radiates the good-heartedness and wisdom the icon is known for, while Jon Cryer is downright diabolical and perfect as his archenemy. I’d go as far to say that Cryer is the second best Lex ever, right behind Smallville‘s Michael Rosenbaum.
Of course, we’ve learned of the storied history shared between the Arrowverse’s Superman and Lex Luthor, but we’ve never actually seen them in the same room. While speaking at Fan Expo Dallas though, Tyler Hoechlin stated that he’d very much like to remedy that situation if given the opportunity:
