I don’t need to inform anyone that mainstream Hollywood entertainment is still in the grips of a franchise and IP based fervor. Mega franchises, sequels, reboots, requels, remakes – all of these have been the lion’s share of high profile releases for well over a decade now. Everything from the most recognizable franchises in film history to more niche pop cultural artifacts have been resurrected, dusted off, and had a new coat of paint air-brushed on.
Every day across social media the online film community seems to litigate “the state” of Hollywood.
Superhero fatigue. Franchise fatigue. You know the discourse. Personally, I take as much of a nonchalant attitude with all this stuff as I can. I have my peccadillos. I have my areas of agreement regarding “the state” of Hollywood. But at the end of the day I’m just…a dude. A dude who just wants to...

Filmmaker Kyra Elise Gardner’s examination of the Child’s Play franchise comes from a personal place in Living with Chucky, debuting on Screambox and Digital on April 4, 2023.
Kyra Elise Gardner is the daughter of Tony Gardner, one of the most prominent and integral special effects artists in the “Chucky” franchise. For the Gardners, Chucky is family.
And the Chucky films, well, they’re often about family as well.
The filmmaker’s familial relationship with the killer Good Guy doll, voiced by Brad Dourif, fittingly coincided with the horror icon unexpectedly finding himself a family in Bride of Chucky. Bride, penned by Don Mancini and directed by Ronny Yu, gave series protagonist Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent) a much-needed rest and instead introduced franchise mainstay Tiffany Valentine (Jennifer Tilly), opening up new layers to Chucky in the process.

Don Mancini’s Curse of Chucky had its world premiere at the 2013 Fantasia Film Festival back in early August. As part of the event, the writer-director and stars of the film sat down for interviews about the project. What follows is the interview conducted with actors Fiona Dourif, Danielle Bisutti, and Chantal Quesnelle. The interview was put on the back burner for a couple of months until its Blu-ray and DVD release today, October 8, due to a major spoiler revealed during the conversation. Readers have been warned!
Edgar Chaput: This is obviously a very iconic franchise. For each of you, what were your initial feelings and impressions when the possibility came about that you might be in the new Chucky movie with the original creator. no less?
Chantal Quesnelle: I screamed when I got the call from my agent. I went “Oh my God!” I was over the moon.

The foul mouthed devil doll makes a return that is sure to delight fans. Especially since Brad Dourif reprises the role (in more ways than one) and even makes it a family affair as his daughter plays a role. There are plenty of shout outs to the series that are sure to please, but after the last two sequels this film may seem quaint. The doorbell rings and wheelchair confined Nica (Fiona Dourif) takes the delivery of a large package that turns out to be a Good Guys doll (uh oh! But they were so cool in the 80s). Her mother Sarah (Chantal Quesnelle) is creeped out the doll and pitches it in the trash. Later that night, Sarah...

With the state of Don Mancini’s Child’s Play franchise floating in a weird flux due to Seed Of Chucky‘s confusing, ridiculous, and off-putting conclusion, Curse Of Chucky came with mixed emotions – but a new hope. This was Mancini’s chance to atone for Glen/Glenda’s sins, and as more and more information started to leak on Chucky’s latest killing spree, fans started to see promise. Gone were the Franken-Chucky scars, sporting a clean new look, which also suggested no Tiffany, no Glen/Glenda, and again, if trailers and such were to be believed, no Andy Barclay. New victims, new story, and the removal of everything we hated – Curse Of Chucky had every inclination of getting back to the dark, true horror Chucky started with. Seed of who?

It’s been twenty-five years since Charles Lee Ray first possessed a Good Guy doll in a Chicago toy store whilst on the run from the cops and in that time we’ve had a further four Child’s Play movies – the last almost ten years ago (has it really been that long?) – each of which has successively watered down the creepy tale of Chucky, taking the series from its tongue-in-cheek slasher beginnings to a mocking parody of its very own franchise. Thankfully Curse of Chucky, from series creator Don Mancini, returns to the “fun and fear” formula which made the original film such a success.

Nine years after Seed of Chucky, everyone’s favorite flame-haired, dungaree-clad “Good Guy” doll returns, and this time round, he’s all set to massacre a brand new family. Directed by Chucky creator Don Mancini, this latest chapter in the adventures of Charles ‘Chucky’ Lee Ray marks an attempt to ditch the overt splatter-comedy of Bride and Seed, and return the franchise to its horror roots. Chucky’s back – and he’s scary again.
Fiona Dourif, daughter of voice-of-Chucky Brad Dourif, is excellent as the film’s protagonist. Confined to a wheelchair, paraplegic Nica lives alone with her mentally unstable mother (Chantal Quesnelle) in a large, conventionally creepy mansion. The film opens as Nica receives an anonymous package. At first, she’s simply mystified to discover Chucky inside – but before long, Nica’s mother winds up dead, lying in a pool of blood, in an apparent suicide. Nica’s overbearing sister Barb (Danielle Bisutti) arrives,...
