As Gov. Walker escalates his budget showdown with unions, he's got help from the Fitzgerald family, which runs both houses of the legislature and, lately, the state troopers. Dirk Johnson reports.
To slap down the public unions, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker knew he would need unblinking Republican loyalty, especially from the bosses in the legislature: Scott Fitzgerald, the leader of the state senate; and Jeff Fitzgerald, the speaker of the state house.
The Wisconsin state troopers, as it happened, needed a new chief this month, and the Walker administration determined the ideal candidate for the job was Stephen Fitzgerald-the 68-year-old father of those very same Fitzgerald brothers, who is now sending his team into the field to hunt down wayward Democrats. The job pays nearly $107,000, and will mean a big boost in pension benefits.

Nick Wyman, whose Broadway acting credits include "A Tale of Two Cities," "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," and "The Phantom of the Opera," has held a seat on Actors' Equity Association's national council since 1990, but it's the last five years that have been the most eventful for the union. In 2006, Equity's longtime executive director, Alan Eisenberg, stepped down after 25 years of service. That same year, Patrick Quinn, the popular president of the union, resigned from his elected role as preparations were made for him to succeed Eisenberg. But before he could officially take on the directorship, Quinn died of a heart attack. The seat he vacated and the one he intended to take were filled by two of his longtime friends—Mark Zimmerman and John Connolly, respectively. Their most important task was to provide stability at a time of grieving for Equity.Late last year, Zimmerman and Connolly abruptly left their...

Mark Zimmerman and John Connolly spent the last few years carrying on the work of their late friend Patrick Quinn. When Quinn stepped down as president of Actors' Equity Association in 2006 to become executive director of the union, Zimmerman, then Equity's 1st vice president, stepped into the vacated position. After Quinn died of a heart attack that year before he could assume his new role, Zimmerman helped recruit Connolly, a former president of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, to take the directorship. Quinn, Zimmerman, and Connolly had been close, going back to their days as young actors on the Philadelphia stage. For a grieving organization, it felt appropriate to place Quinn's legacy in the hands of his trusted friends. The torch-bearing came to an abrupt end late last year. On Nov. 30, Equity announced that Connolly had decided not to seek a second term and would step down immediately.

Mark S. Zimmerman, president of Actors' Equity Association, has resigned from position, according to the union, effective immediately. Zimmerman, an actor currently performing in the Broadway company of "West Side Story," explained in a statement that the decision stemmed from his desires to further his acting career and spend more time with his partner. "I didn't go into this business to be a president of a union," he said. "I did it to be an actor. I miss that, and I want to devote my time to doing what I love."First vice president Paige Price will take on Zimmerman's duties until a new president is elected, though she will not take the title of prexy. Zimmerman became president in 2006, after then-president Patrick Quinn resigned to become Equity's executive director. Zimmerman then led the search for a new executive director following Quinn's sudden passing, leading to John Connelly's appointment to...

John Connolly has stepped down as executive director of Actors Equity, the union announced Nov. 30. Carol Waaser has taken over as acting director."I came home to my parent union as Equity's executive director on a mission with two important elements—to help the union regroup after the terrible tragedy of my lifelong friend Patrick Quinn's untimely death, and to move forward the process of change and evolution crucial to Equity's ability to survive and thrive in the changing world of theater and live performance," Connolly said in a statement. "I believe that I've achieved substantial progress in addressing these challenges and I wish Equity well in the next phase of its growth and success." Connolly, a former president of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, took the Equity post in 2007, shortly after the death of Quinn, the former Equity president who had been slated for the executive-director position.
