New Delhi, March 11 (Ians) A group of more than 190 current and former world leaders, Nobel laureates, civil society organisations, faith leaders, and health experts in an open letter called on governments to “never again” allow “profiteering and nationalism” to come before the needs of humanity, as it did during the Covid-19 pandemic.
They condemned the vaccine inequality which led to one preventable death every 24 seconds in the first year of the Covid vaccine rollout alone, according to a study published in the Lancet.
It is “a scar on the world’s conscience” that those lives were not saved, the signatories said.
Covid-19 countermeasures were developed and delivered with enormous public funding. Therefore, they are “the people’s vaccines, the people’s tests, and the people’s treatments”, they said.
But instead of distributing Covid-19 vaccines, tests, and treatments based on need, pharmaceutical companies sold doses first to the “richest countries...

Who is Oscar Isaac? He stars as a fictitious '60s folk singer in the new Coen Brothers' film "Inside Llewyn Davis," and although he's made plenty of films you've probably seen, he's seemingly come out of nowhere, so much so that a reporter at Cannes (where the film won the Grand Prix award) asked the actor, "Where have you come from?"
The 33-year-old was born in Guatemala, raised in Miami, and educated at Juilliard. He's been acting for more than 10 years, just in roles that haven't gotten him a lot of attention -- until now.
Even if you remember him from "Drive" or "Robin Hood," you've likely never heard him sing before, but he's actually been singing for years. Before breaking out as an actor, he sang and played lead guitar in the band The Blinking Underdogs.
Since you'll likely be seeing a lot more of Isaac, here's a...

Balibo
Stars: Anthony Lapaglia, Oscar Isaac, Bea Viegas, Michael Stone | Written by Robert Connolly, David Williamson | Directed by Robert Connolly
I was first made aware of the events that Balibo portrays by the Noam Chomsky documentary Manufacturing Consent. In 1975, the Indonesian military invaded East Timor. Five journalists of the Australian media were covering the invasion – which was basically a massacre, during which time over 180,000 were killed – and eventually lost their lives, killed by the Indonesian army (who maintain to this day that the journalists were caught in the crossfire, rather than executed as the coroner’s report states). Days later, another journalist, Roger East, headed out to East Timor to find out what happened to the Balibo Five. Balibo follows East in his quest for truth.
The Chomsky documentary used the East Timor invasion as an example of the Western media’s disproportionate coverage of potentially unpopular stories – that the invasion,...

Campaigning star Jennifer Lopez's humanitarian efforts have been honored by human rights group Amnesty International. The Out Of Sight actress was awarded the Artists for Amnesty prize at the Berlin Film Festival on Wednesday for highlighting the spate of unsolved killings in Mexico in her latest film. Bordertown, which also stars Antonio Banderas and Martin Sheen, sees Lopez play an investigative journalist reporting on a serial killer in the Mexican town of Ciudad Juarez. Amnesty International claims more than 400 unsolved female murders have been committed in Juarez since the killings began in 1993. Lopez described the situation as "one of the world's most shocking and disturbing, underreported crimes against humanity." The actress said she was "very humbled" after being presented with the award by East Timor's Prime Minister Jose Ramos Horta, a Nobel Peace laureate.
