If you listen closely, every year around October 1st you’ll start to hear things go bump in the night… but don’t worry, instead of g-g-g-ghoooosts it’s mostly just the sound of props department interns who have been made to stay late and dig out boxes of bat bunting, dry ice machines and facepaint ready for another round of Halloween TV specials.
Halloween episodes are now a spooky season staple on both sides of the pond, but while the US has been producing Halloween hits like It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and The Flintstones’ ‘A Haunted House is Not A Home’ since the early 1960s, the American tradition didn’t properly catch on in the UK until the 1970s.
Dig through the archives, and – while a couple of spooky stories were read out on Jackanory in the late 1960s, including Doctor Who’s own Jon Pertwee’s memorable reading of Ghoulies,...

K.T. Oslin, the first female songwriter to win the CMA Award for Song of the Year, for her 1987 hit “80’s Ladies,” died Monday at 78. Oslin had been battling Parkinson’s disease and was diagnosed with Covid-19 last week, according to her friend, the journalist Robert K. Oermann, who confirmed her death.
Oslin, born Kay Toinette Oslin in Arkansas, was 45 when she released her chart-topping debut country album, 1987’s 80’s Ladies — a remarkable feat then for a woman in country music and a near impossibility today. Along with the Top 10 title track,...

Ty Herndon doesn’t particularly have any doubts about his singing ability — these days, it’s more the song itself that can prove intimidating for the Alabama native. The latest to make him feel that way is one that should give pause to any singer with a shred of self-awareness: “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” the Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin tune turned into a massive 1991 hit by Bonnie Raitt.

Los Angeles—For the 50th episode of its genre-swapping performance show, “Crossroads,” Cmt turned to two female performers at the top of their game: Katy Perry and Kacey Musgraves. (Spoiler Alert: Stop reading now if you don't know the songs they performed) The taping, which took place Friday night (18) at Sony Studios, served as a precursor for what to expect when the two acts tour together this summer, as well as showed that the bridge between Musgraves’ traditional county tunes and Perry’s power pop isn’t as long a one as it might seem. That’s, in part, because Perry came prepared to cross the divide into country and seemed eager to show off her singer/songwriter side. For sure, she’s done that before in her ballads, such as “Not Like The Movies” or “Unconditionally,” but she’s best known for her uptempo, fun confections. Also notable about...

The diver-turned-actor is now Britain's greatest action hero. Here's five of his finest performances
Since he fell into acting almost by chance in the late 90s, Jason Statham's career has been steadily on the up.
These days he can stake a claim to being Britain's greatest action hero – but, as his new film Hummingbird demonstrates, there's more to his range than fighting, shooting, driving fast cars and delivering Schwarzenegger-esque one-liners.
Here are five of our favourite Jason Statham moments from film – but what are we missing? Let us know in the thread below.
1. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Guy Ritchie cast the Stath in his first film after seeing him selling things out of a suitcase on the streets of London – and cast him as Bacon, a cockney wideboy who sells things out of a suitcase on the streets of London.

You may find the new Ben Stiller movie The Watch strangely familiar. But that's not necessarily a good thing
You might be forgiven for thinking that you've seen The Watch before. Not because Ben Stiller's character is the same uptight blowhard that he has played in everything for the past 15 years, or because Richard Ayoade is basically just Moss from The It Crowd again, or because Vince Vaughn remains content to sit back and bibble out the same directionless patter that has been his stock in trade for what seems like centuries.
No. The reason is because, once you've scraped away all the sex jokes and clanging Costco product placement, you're basically left with Dad's Army. Both are essentially stories about a group of ill-prepared middle-aged incompetents trying to escape the monotony of their day-to-day lives by fudging together a defence against an enemy they don't fully understand. With The Watch,...

Bringing together multiple components of genre filmmaking, the British feature Jack Falls found a recipe for success by winning best action film at the 2011 London Independent Film Festival.
It's the final part of a trilogy, each based on a graphic novel written by director Paul Tanter and illustrated by Oscar Alvarado.
More details, plus reaction from the filmmakers and a trailer for Jack Falls, are included below.
Tanter, who attended the festival, said: "I'm thrilled to accept this award from the Liff. The competition within independent film has never been better, and we are honoured to have not only been included amongst those selected, but to have won the award too."
All three films are shot in a Sin City style - using splashes of colour against high-contrast black and white - with comic book undertones that reflect the trilogy's origins.

This week, HeyUGuys were lucky enough to be invited to the May Fair hotel in London for the premiere of British gangster flick Jack Falls. The concluding part of a trilogy, the film is released on DVD and Blu-ray this Monday.
Adapted from the graphic novels written by Paul Tanter (who makes his directorial debut here) it’s a visually ambitious film with a narrative scope which clearly extends beyond its modest budget.
Before the screening, we had the opportunity to chat to some of the figures from behind and in front of the camera (and in some cases, both).
Co- star Alan Ford (aka Bricktop in Snatch) on why the Brit’s love the gangster genre:
It’s nothing new. People have always liked the villains from that type of world, going right back to Bill Sykes in Oliver Twist.
Does he ever tire of being offered roles as the bad guy?...

Tenuous link? Maybe. But then I'd argue that those two Tom Baker stories are made up of three strong parts and a weak final one, whereas Terminus works on the reverse principle in most fans' eyes: an excellent first part goes steadily downhill into a runaround that's so dull it could be hosted by Mike Reid at the local Tory Party Conference (well, in 1983 anyway). Although "G-g-g-g-g-g-gooooo!!!" is a pretty appropriate phrase to bellow at Cameron and his cronies.

Jack Says is a Kalimasu and Lucky Strike co-production, which was released in 2008. Shot partially in London, Jack Says has already spawned two sequels and this crime noir thriller offers some interesting interactions, but little in the way of thrills. Currently being distributed by Your Indie Films in North America, Jack Says is worth a mention, especially some of the camera techniques, but the film is not completely satisfying.
The film begins with Jack (Simon Phillips) tied to a chair while being flambéed by the Guv'Nor (Mike Reid) with questionable metaphors. Several minutes later Jack wakes up with no memory of previous events and a bloody head wound. Much of the film from here on in follows Jack as he tries to restore his memories with an address and a Polaroid picture of naked breasts. Instead, Jack finds an ex-girlfriend and...
