Exclusive: CAA just signed Matthew Michael Carnahan, the main writer who adapted the Max Brooks novel World War Z, the upcoming Marc Forster-directed thriller that stars Brad Pitt and a helluva lot of zombies (and subsequent scribes). He also scripted The Snowman, an adaptation of the Jo Nesbo novel that Martin Scorsese is producing for Working Title. He previously scripted the screen adaptation of the classic British miniseries State Of Play, The Kingdom, and Lions For Lambs. Carnahan left Wme, the latest in rather bruising poaching battles between those agencies. Carnahan is currently rewriting Code Name Sasha for New Regency and soon will show bro Joe Carnahan that he’s not the only helmer in the Carnahan clan when he makes his directing debut with his script Violent Talent, with Garrett Hedlund attached to star. Wme and CAA are representing the film’s distribution rights (awkward). Carnahan is still...

Southland‘s Ben McKenzie has been cast as the male lead in the CBS drama pilot The Advocates. True Blood alumna Brit Morgan also has been cast in the pilot, written by Bruno Heller and directed by David Nutter. For McKenzie, the casting is in second position to Southland, which is currently airing its fifth season. The critically praised cop show, which originated on NBC, has never been a big ratings performer and is once again on the bubble, but it has been a prestige series for TNT, which has not made a decision on its future. Both The Advocates and Southland are produced by Warner Bros. TV. Advocates centers on lawyer Shannon Carter and ex-con Henry Bird (McKenzie) who team up as “victim advocates,” going to the very edge of the law to right wrongs and fight for the underdog. It's times like these we don't mind working on the weekend as the latest news coming out of Afm has one of the best films we've seen all year, Eduardo Sanchez's Lovely Molly (review here), finding domestic distribution with Image Entertainment. The deal comes as Content Film sells international territories at Afm, and we couldn't be happier that our Stateside readers at least are assured of seeing this one sooner rather than later.
Per Deadline the deal is high six figures, and the plan is to release theatrically next spring. Image acquisitions vice president Mark Ward called the film “a return and evolution to the genre that [Eduardo] created” with Blair Witch. “We look forward to partnering with Haxan and Amber to maximize the truly robust transmedia marketing campaign they’ve put together to make the film a huge success.” (Haxan Films’ Robin Cowie and Gregg Hale produced Lovely Molly...

Content has acquired foreign rights on Lovely Molly, the genre film written and directed by Blair Witch Project‘s Eduardo Sanchez. A domestic distribution deal is coming. Lovely Molly made its debut in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto Film Festival last month. The title character (Gretchen Lodge) is a newlywed who returns to her long abandoned family home and is hit with scary reminders of her nightmarish childhood that quickly color her new life. The film’s produced by Robin Cowie, Gregg Hale, Jane Fleming, and Mark Ordesky. The intention is to employ the same kind of viral marketing that helped turned Blair Witch into such a big hit. “We were shocked by Gretchen Lodge’s extraordinary performance,...
