South African cinema is still catching up to the diversity of the population it represents: a congregation of cultures, languages and religions that got ironed out in the popular imagination by the white supremacist politics of the apartheid era. The country’s significant Cape Muslim, or Cape Malay, population is one demographic that has traditionally received short shrift on screen, a context that makes Amy Jephta’s hearty, fractious family comedy “Barakat” more of a milestone than its relatively modest storytelling might suggest. Following four adult brothers upended by news of their widowed mother’s plans to remarry, the film may skirt cliché in its broad depiction of fragile masculinity versus women’s intuition, but ultimately thrives on its vivid social and linguistic particularities.

It was a calculated risk lock-picker Randal Hendricks (Irshaad Ally) was willing to make. Borrow twenty-five thousand dollars from a loan shark he’s known since childhood (Danny Ross’ Emmie) and flip it to some gangsters willing to give him a deal on drugs. Sell the drugs at a mark-up and he should have enough to get himself and his girlfriend Pam (Monique Rockman) out of their rough Cape Town slum. Like Emmie warned, however, gangsters aren’t to be trusted. So when we meet Randal again months later to discover him a paraplegic being carried to his apartment by a neighbor (Ephram Gordon’s Warren), it’s easy to assume things went south. Now broke, unable to walk, and indebted to a psychopath, the clock on his life begins counting down.

Exclusive: Hot SXSW title Number 37, a Hitchcockian South African crime thriller, is heading to theaters in the U.S. after Dark Star Pictures picked up all North American rights.
The film, which is the directorial debut of Nosipho Dumisa, is to get a fall theatrical release, starting in New York and L.A., followed by an early winter video-on-demand release.
Number 37, which started out as a short film before picking up steam after the festival route, aired as part of the Narrative Feature section at the Austin fest earlier this year.
The plot of the Afrikaans-language pic is an homage to Hitchcock’s Rear Window and centers on Randall, a low-level criminal recently crippled in an illicit deal gone wrong. Cooped up in his apartment in a rough Cape Town neighborhood, he is heavily indebted to a loan shark named Emmie with the clock ticking for him and his girlfriend...

If you’re going to steal, steal from the best. That certainly applies to South African writer-director Nosipho Dumisa, who takes the premise of one of her favorite films, Alfred Hitchcock’s voyeuristic man-in-a-wheelchair thriller Rear Window (1954), and gives it a grittier, much more sanguine spin in her debut feature Number 37. Would that her lead character, Randal Hendricks (Irshaad Ally), followed the same advice. He just borrows and takes from the worst of the worst: First from a loan shark, Emmie (Danny Ross), whose interest charges on late payments are of the life-ending variety. And second, from a bunch of...

When Red Dead Redemption rode into town on the back of its trusty steed, it was one of the greatest moments of the last console generation, and now, Red Dead Redemption 2 (or Red Dead 3, as we believe it’ll be called) is on the horizon, with former Rockstar employee Danny Ross saying in a Reddit Ama that it’s in the works.
When a user asked what Rockstar are working on, Ross replied “Really? Dumbass. Really? Two”. Now, Ross might just be a rude a-hole, but it’s a strange coincidence that the first letter to each word he said add up to read ‘RDR2’. Maybe he’s not such a bad guy after all.
If this is true, then this is a smart move by the team, and great news for all of us. Sure, the GTA series is more of a global phenomenon than Red Dead, but...

This has been a fun year for remembering the glory that is Back to the Future from the commemorative Nike Mag shoes to the impending return of the DeLorean with an all-new electrical model in 2013. Now another cool piece of work is coming in the form of a fantastic new poster from Tim Doyle being released in correlation with Secret Show to the Future 2, a special online streaming event with Anthony Cumia of the Opie & Anthony Show, producer Danny Ross and comedian Joe DeRosa providing Mystery Science Theater 3000 style commentary while watching the sequel. See the cool poster and event details below! Here's Tim Doyle's Back to the Future Part II poster via SlashFilm (click for a larger version): As for the event, since it's a secret show, you won't be able to attend in person, since people are meant to tune in for a special Ustream...

As much as everyone adores the Back to the Future trilogy, it rates pretty high on the unintentional comedy scale. There are flubs, over the top performances and awkward lines of dialogue across all three films making them great to watch with a bunch of friends. This weekend, a special live Ustream broadcast will let you do just that. It's called the Secret Show to the Future 2 and it happens at 10 p.m. Est November 5. In 2008, several members of the Sirius Xm's Opie and Anthony show did the first Secret Show to the Future, where they watched Robert Zemeckis' 1985 film complete with live comedy commentary in the tradition of Mystery Science Theater 3000. This Saturday brings the sequel. Anthony Cumia of the O&A Show, producer Danny Ross and comedian Joe DeRosa, all huge fans of the films, will watch Back to the Future Part II live and provide...

We'd be downright frightened if a more random confluence of talent was announced for a film than "Mall," an adaptation of Eric Bogosian's 2001 novel.
According to Deadline, the film will star Vincent D'Onofrio, Chelsea Handler and Bogosian himself, and be directed by Linkin Park's Joe Hahn, who makes his feature debut. The film revolves around "one crazy day" in a suburban American mall where all hell breaks loose after a guy walks in armed-to-the teeth.
Those not clued in to the multimedia whirlwind that is Bogosian should know that he's most famous for his 1987 play "Talk Radio" about an abrasive radio shock jock who gets assassinated, which was made into a movie (starring Bogosian) directed by Oliver Stone, and had a successful Broadway revival in 2007. He's since gone on to more plays, books, monologues and an acting career, including the villain in "Under Siege 2!"

'He had no cell phone, no computer, no TV,' musician Danny Ross recalls of the old-school 'Idol' guitar ace.

Unlike most of the "American Idol" audience, Danny Ross has had a front-row seat to the Casey James show for years now. As owner of the Fort Worth, Texas, blues club the Keys Lounge, Ross has seen the "Idol" finalist grow from a fresh-faced kid to a full-fledged guitar ace, and no, he's not surprised that James now stands on the brink of big-time fame. In fact, Ross always thought James was destined for greatness.
"I've known him for a while, and I always knew there was something about him," Ross told MTV News on Tuesday.
"His mom is a singer, and he'd come sit in when he was a baby-faced kid; we'd have these blues jams. And as he got more proficient,...

It's a bit late in the season for the usual conspiracy theories to arise, but there's something about the way the "American Idol" finale is shaping up that has given Casey James' supporters pause.
"I don't know, I think there's something prejudicial going on, where it just seems like they're stacking the deck against him," said Danny Ross, owner of the Fort Worth blues club Keys Lounge, where the top-three "Idol" finisher has jammed on and off for the past two years. On Wednesday afternoon (May 19), Ross said he thought James did well on Tuesday night's show, but he just couldn't shake the feeling that the show's producers were trying to steer America toward a Lee DeWyze/ Crystal Bowersox showdown.

Dick Wolf's "Law & Order" franchises are seeing major cast changes this year. The recent announcement of S. Epatha Merkerson leaving "Law & Order" comes not long after "Law & Order: Ci" announced three of their leads departing this season. Vincent D'Onofrio, who portrayed Det. Bobby Goren; Kathryn Erbe, who played his partner Alexandra Eames; and Eric Bogosian, who is leaving his role as Capt. Danny Ross were replaced with Saffron Burrows, Jeff Goldblum and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. Merkerson asked producers to be released after the current 20th season. Variety reports that Merkerson made her request before the series was to enter production on the last episode of the season so her character could be given a proper send-off. Merkerson...

"Law & Order: Criminal Intent" is refreshed with the arrival of a new captain in the ninth season. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, known for her recurring role as Anne Cassidy on "Without a Trace" will join the show as the successor of Captain Danny Ross who is leaving after three years in his position. There is no name of the character yet.
Shift in the captain position has been taking place since James Deakins headed the Major Case Squad division and was replaced by Ross in 2006. The casting of Mastrantonio marks the first time a woman is assigned as the captain.
Other four characters are also making an exit from the show as its focus is given to Jeff Goldblum and Saffron Burrows' characters. The regulars who will not be seen in the new season would be Vincent D'Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe, Eric Bogosian and Julianne Nicholson. According to EW, one of...

Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio has joined USA Network's "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," completing the casting transformation on the police procedural for its upcoming ninth season.
She will play the new captain taking over the Major Case Squad on the Wolf Films/Universal Cable Prods. series.
Mastrantonio's character, who comes from a working-class background, succeeds Capt. Danny Ross (Eric Bogosian), who headed the division for the past three years, following the departure of Capt. James Deakins (original cast member Jamey Sheridan).
Mastrantonio is one of two new faces on "L&O: Ci" for next season, joining Saffron Burrows. The hires follow the exit of four regulars on the show: original stars Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe as well as Bogosian and new mom Julianne Nicholson, who is being replaced by Burrows.

"Law & Order: Criminal Intent" is planning dramatic cast changes for next season, with four regulars, including star Vincent D'Onofrio, departing.
D'Onofrio is expected to exit sometime during the series' upcoming ninth season, handing over his badge to Jeff Goldblum as the top detective on the major case squad.
Kathryn Erbe, who, like D'Onofrio, has been with the show since its beginning and plays his long-suffering partner Alex Eames, also will be phased out, as will Eric Bogosian, who plays the force's captain, Danny Ross.
As previously reported, Julianne Nicholson, who played Goldblum's partner but has just had a baby, her second, also is leaving. She's being replaced by British actress Saffron Burrows.
Details about D'Onofrio, Erbe and Bogosian's exit are still unclear as the actors' deals are being worked out. The network only recently renewed the Wolf Films/Universal Cable Prods. series for a ninth season, slated to premiere in late spring with a two-parter.

Television Rating: 3.5/5.0 Chicago – The revolving door of casting in the world of “Law & Order” continues this month when Jeff Goldblum joins the cast of USA Network’s “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” as the new partner for Detective Megan Wheeler (Julianne Nicholson). The season kicks off with a well-paced and intriguing episode featuring the old cast on Sunday, April 19th, 2009 and the new member joins the squad a week later.
“Criminal Intent” has always been an intriguing installment of the Dick Wolf franchise, largely due to what I consider the best performance across all three versions including the original “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” - the work by the great Vincent D’Onofrio. This versatile and unique actor makes decisions that others wouldn’t even consider.
