Divisive comic Andrew Dice Clay is determined to revive his career, and he may have finally secured a path to glory. The Las Vegas stand-up is set to star in a six-episode, half-hour series for Showtime that Variety claims will use Clay’s “rags-to-riches-to-rags trajectory” as “fodder” for the show.
A semi-autobiographical scripted series – there’s an oxymoron – Clay will shoot this summer in Vegas and follow the once-famous superstar as he tries to maintain a family life whilst rebuilding his failing career.
The show was created by writer Scot Armstrong (The Hangover Part II) and Fox 21 TV Studios, with Fox execs apparently funding a presentation for Showtime out of their own pockets. Both Clay and Armstrong will executive produce the series along with Daybreakers‘ duo Sean and Bryan Furst, Richard Shepard and Bruce Rubenstein.

Exclusive: Hot off an acclaimed performance in Woody Allen’s new film Blue Jasmine, Andrew Dice Clay has signed with Resolution. The agency will try to help him capitalize on a surprise breakout performance in Jasmine, which this past weekend had the biggest opening per-screen average of Allen’s career. While Clay stars opposite strong thesps Cate Blanchett, Alec Baldwin, Sally Hawkins, Peter Sarsgaard and Bobby Cannavale, critics have been singling him out for praise for his performance as a working stiff ruined by a white-collar crook. Clay showed acting promise early on in his stint on Michael Mann’s Crime Story TV series opposite the late Dennis Farina, but all that got overshadowed when his stand-up act began selling out stadiums. Clay most recently played himself in a story arc in the final season of HBO’s Entourage. It was that work that inspired Allen to cast him in Blue Jasmine.

About two and a half years ago, Andrew Dice Clay reached rock bottom. "My career was in the fucking toilet," says the veteran comedian. "I wasn't earning enough to make my monthly nut, and I had a bunch of lawsuits against me I can't talk about." Desperate for cash, the notoriously foul-mouthed entertainer decided that his only option was to try his luck in Las Vegas. "I used to be a big gambler," he says. "I could win or lose $500,000 to $700,00 within hours."
