What is this? Sex-oriented movies with believable psychodramatics, made by a committed artist with taste and talent? Joe Sarno’s pictures still aren’t suitable for grandma, but he’s way, way above the exploitation grindhouse competition of his day. His ’60s B&W pictures are not only watchable, they’re involving. Restored to pre-print condition, they’re — how can I best put this? — artistically respectable.

It all started with Exposed. I’m not sure what brought this 1971 Swedish sexploitation film to the suggestion portion of my Netflix account (presumably the roster of Jess Franco films recently added), but after reading the description, I figured it was worth a shot: “A pretty young teen finds her innocence lost when an unguarded night of revelry yields shameful secrets, and a stack of nude pictures that could ruin her life. But to get her hands on the negatives, she’ll have to expose herself even further.” That is indeed the basic plot of the film, which plays out exactly as one would expect for such fare. But what was unexpected while watching Exposed (also known as the much less enticing Diary of a Rape), was the 21-year-old star of the film. Her name is Christina Lindberg.

Fantastic Fest is touted as the largest genre film fest, from experience, I can tell you the Austin week-long event still feels like an intimate gathering, for fans who love of horror, sci-fi, experimental, foreign, action, animated and just straight-up gnarly film. This Friday, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation will be released. It’s the fifth film in the iconic franchise, but sadly stands as only the third film of its director Christopher McQuarrie in 15 years since he got behind the camera. That’s a real shame, because Christopher McQuarrie is Hollywood’s best-kept secret when he really should be their pride and joy.
Christopher McQuarrie was so damn hot in the mid-90s. He wrote the script for the classic The Usual Suspects and came home with an Oscar. He ended up using that clout to get his feature-directing debut made with the criminally underrated The Way of the Gun, released in 2000. The film failed both critically and commercially – a domestic gross of $6 million, and a worldwide gross of only $13 million against a $21 million budget – and McQuarrie went from insider to outcast in Hollywood.
Fast forward eight years and McQuarrie had only...

The doe-eyed , baby-faced Swedish actress Christina Lindberg is best known for starring as Frigga in the 1974 rape and revenge classic Thriller, A Cruel Picture, which was released in the U.S. under the title They Call Her One Eye. Born in 1950, the voluptuous Ms Lindberg was an incredibly popular nude model in men’s magazines before beginning her movie career, which lasted from about 1970 to 1975. Her debut was the 1971 hit Maid In Sweden followed by more successful “soft-core” sex dramas such as Anita The Swedish Nymph, Exposed, Campus Swingers, Swedish Wildcats, Young Playthings and a dozen or so more. She went to Japan in 1973 and co-starred in Sex And Fury and Sex In Japan. Otherwise all of her movies were made in Sweden where she has lived her entire life. Christina refused to act in the hardcore sex films that began to dominate the industry by the mid-1970’s and...

Joe Sarno may be, in the words of performance artist Annie Sprinkle, "the Ingmar Bergman of porn," but A Life in Dirty Movies doesn't dwell on his accomplishments as a pioneering sexploitation moviemaker. Instead, director Wiktor Ericsson makes Sarno's career (Confessions of a Young American Housewife, The Wall of Flesh, All the Sins of Sodom) of secondary importance to his relationship with wife Peggy Steffans. Ericsson's focus on Sarno's marriage is striking since Sarno himself, then 89 and a month away from death, focused much of his energy on a never-realized return to the softcore pornography he mastered in the 1970s. Sarno's work is generally unexamined here but presented in an uncritically positive light. For example, Sarno objects to hardcore porn...

Astro City # 12
Written by Kurt Busiek
Art by Graham Nolan
Published by DC/Wildstorm comics
Having a villain as the main character is something Astro City has indulged in before, on occasion, usually in the form of stories of redemption, like the early classic The Tarnished Angel. Issue 12 of the current series, The Deep Dark Woods, pulls a similar move, but the name of the game this time around isn’t redemption but addiction.
Our protagonist is Fred Glosman, a small time hood who works for various “theme gangs” in Astro City, addicted to the clothes and style of running with the likes of the Sweet Adelines or the Menagerie Gang. But of course, Fred falls in love and tries to go straight for his wife and child, but the lure of crime keeps calling him back.

His is a classical show business tale, sort of similar to the Ruby Keeler / Bebe Daniels switch found in the classic musical 42nd Street: when Deep Throat's original male lead didn't show up on the set, filmmaker Gerard Damiano had lighting director Reems to step in as an unknown (and later come back a star). The film's plot revolved around a doctor (played by Reems) who discovers that...

“I wonder what the meanest, foulest, rottenest, woodsiest sex crime ever was?”
Fred Lincoln was a giant in the adult film industry, directing and acting in hundreds of porno films from the early 70’s up until about 5 five years ago when his health began to decline. We Are Movie Geeks doesn’t cover porn, but like his costar David Hess (who died in October of 2011), Lincoln would have gone done in history as one of the slimiest degenerates in the movies if he had appeared in nothing except the 1972 rape and revenge classic Last House On The Left where he played the repellent villain Weasel Padowski (a name he sometimes used as a pseudonym for his porn directing). Director Wes Craven’s first film was one of the most notorious movies ever made, offending nearly everyone who saw it, and 40 years later, it hasn’t lost any of its edge.

Vampire Ecstasy
Stars: Nadia Henkowa, Anke Syring, Ulrike Butz, Nico Wolferstetter | Written and Directed by Joseph W. Sarno
The horror genre is known to be one of the most liberal forms of movie making, it’s willing to take risks and to allow the more unsavoury side of cinema into its realm. I know many will read that and not agree, pulling examples out of their hats to show the PG-13 box office hits to say “this is hardly risk taking”, but this is not the point. Historically and outside of the Hollywood mainstream horror is never afraid to push the boundaries. This is why at times we hit on the stranger of films, like for example Vampire Ecstasy, an adventure into the world of sexploitation (and not one of the best).
The basic story, and only story to Vampire Ecstasy, is a group of young girls are invited to...

Gary Oldman as Jackie Flannery in State Of Grace (Phil Joanou, 1990, USA):
Long considered one of the most talented actors in cinema, it’s very strange that his outstanding acting as the younger brother of Ed Harris’ local crime boss in this underrated film doesn’t get talked about nearly enough when discussing Oldman’s body of work. This is a must-see performance for all Oldman fans. For the record, State Of Grace is a far better Irish mob film than The Departed (Martin Scorsese, 2006, USA), primarily because it contains much better acting across the board. Oldman was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Tomas Alfredson, 2011, UK/France).
Other notable Gary Oldman performances: Prick Up Your Ears (Stephen Frears, 1987, USA), Dracula (Francis Ford Coppola, 1992, USA), True Romance (Tony Scott, 1993, USA), Leon: The Professional (Luc Besson, 1994, France), Air Force One (Wolfgang Petersen, 1997, USA), The Contender (Rod Lurie,...

Former "One Day at a Time" star Mackenzie Phillips has had a difficult few years, between a stint on Vh1's "Celebrity Rehab" and being in the media spotlight over an alleged sexual relationship with her famous father. But she’s intent on moving forward.
In her latest effort, Phillips is getting somewhat of a makeover thanks to Own's "Extreme Clutter." On Part 2 of the show's Season 2 premiere, which airs Jan. 2, organization expert Peter Walsh visits the actress to help her gain control of her home. It's crowded with material representations of painful memories that stem from years of substance abuse and emotional family upheaval.
"I think it's the last vestige of the junkie I used to be," Phillips says of her cluttered home in this exclusive video interview. "But why am I hanging onto the past?"

Ahead of Review's book club on The Hours, Michael Cunningham explains how discovering Virginia Woolf as a teenager inspired him to write his novel about her life – and how his mother provided a surprising solution when he got stuck
Virginia Woolf was great fun at parties. I want to tell you that up front, because Woolf, who died 70 years ago this year, is so often portrayed as the Dark Lady of English letters, all glowery and sad, looking balefully on from a crepuscular corner of literary history with a stone lodged in her pocket.
She did, of course, have her darker interludes. More on that in a moment. But first I'd like to announce, to anyone who might not know, that she, when not sunk in her periodic depressions, was the person one most hoped would come to the party; the one who could speak amusingly on just about any...

Us film producer who became an innovative London cinema owner
David Stone, who has died aged 78, played significant roles both in radical Us film-making of the 1960s and in Britain's golden age of arthouse cinemas in the 1970s. In 1974, David and his wife, Barbara, acquired the former Classic cinema, at Notting Hill Gate, west London, which they transformed and renamed the Gate. They opened their own distribution company, Cinegate, whose first acquisition was three films by the young German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder: The Merchant of Four Seasons (1971); The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (1972); and Fear Eats the Soul (1974). The first Fassbinder films to be shown in Britain, these brought the Gate instant critical and box-office success at its opening in September that year.
The Gate often enjoyed success with films others had passed over, including La Cage Aux Folles (1978), and Woody Allen's Annie Hall (1977) and Manhattan...

Today is Valentine's Day, which means... next to nothing unless you want it to, really. I remember hearing all about kindly St.Valentine who gave poor girls money anonymously so they could have a dowry and get married but apparently that's a load of shit. Also: has nothing to do with flowers or greeting cards and everything to do with random acts of kindness which is absolutely not one of the messages that has persisted in the face of overpriced dinners and flowers. There are actually 14 recorded Saints called Valentine and not one of them still has a feast day on the Roman Catholic calender or the Greek Orthodox calender. Basically, you can make up anything you want as a "Valentine's day tradition" and no one can prove you wrong. I'm not saying I dislike Valentine's Day, I appreciate any excuse for chocolate and flowers, but I'd appreciate if the...

Obviously the big news today is that there was a football game played yesterday and this one team won it and the other team lost. And that all the performers seemed to be on a mission to out-do each other in the field of embarrassing moments in front of the nation. It just got worse as the night went on, to the point where it was almost funny if it hadn't been so painful. In my opinion, the whole mess probably wasn't worth the hangover some of y'all are sporting today, although I wasn't around for the live chat so maybe that part was. But that's all in the past and right now we're looking to the future. Specifically, to the immediate future involving what's on television tonight. Here's your Monday night TV:

Peter Walsh's new show 'Enough Already!' is like 'Hoarders' Lite. Instead of creeping into squeamish territory -- rats, cats and who knows what else -- Walsh sticks strictly to clutter. But that's not to say clutter can't get grossly out of control.
Walsh visits families that have been affected by clutter and are in need of help for whatever reason -- and really, who isn't? -- and literally transforms their lives. Whether they save old things that belonged to a deceased family member, or just collect a lot of collections, Walsh says simply, "Everyone struggles with their stuff."
So the big questions are: Are you happy with the way you live? Are you happy with the stuff in your home? See what other things Walsh asks to diagnose his clients and hopefully help liberate them from the power of their "stuff.
