Four years ago, investors gingerly handed over seed money to Lumosity, a startup creating brain games. Today they're happily tossing the same company $32 million. What changed?
Back in 2007, Lumosity was a scrappy startup scrounging for seed money. Today, the San Francisco-based company that creates games to make your brain work better is announcing it’s landed over $32 million in new funding.
What a difference four years make.
“When we first invested, we were concerned this was just a niche area for people with Alzheimer’s or other cognitive problems,” Tim Chang of Norwest Venture Partners tells Fast Company. “But Lumosity has proved there’s universal demand for this among all demographics.”
Indeed, today, over 14 million people in 180 countries either subscribe to Lumosity’s website or have downloaded one of its iPhone apps. And revenues have grown 25% every quarter since its launch.
Other companies, like CogniFit and Posit Science, also compete in this space,...

Chicago – While Alex Gibney’s enraging 2010 documentary “Casino Jack and the United States of Money” brought cinematic immortality to the life of recently imprisoned lobbyist Jack Abramoff, George Hickenlooper’s narrative re-telling transforms the cinema-obsessed criminal into the larger-than-life movie hero of his dreams. I have a sneaking suspicion that Abramoff may love this picture.
Consider the memorable pre-title sequence. Abramoff brushes his teeth in the mirror of a public bathroom, while harboring a stare to rival that of Jake La Motta. It’s not long before he launches into an impassioned and defensive monologue, justifying his outrageous actions while voicing his contempt for the majority of humanity, resigned to living honest yet “mediocre” lives. Like him or not, he is who he is, though the levels of self-deception fueling his self-righteousness are dizzying to say the least.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0

A look at what's new on DVD and Blu-ray today:
"Taxi Driver" (1976)
Directed by Martin Scorsese
Released by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
One can read about the extensive restoration of what many consider to be Martin Scorsese's finest film at The Digital Bits, but if you're a film fan, you might not need convincing to pick up the latest edition of the film about the disillusioned cabbie, which includes all the special features from the previous DVDs of the film (a feature-length making of doc, a score of shorter featurettes) while adding the commentary track between Scorsese and writer Paul Schrader that originally appeared on the 1986 Criterion laser disc. All in all, it's the definitive edition that the film deserves.

Casinos, questionable scruples, and Kevin Spacey: what more could you want from a comedy? Spacey stars as real-life DC lobbyist Jack Abramoff teams up with Barry Pepper, Jon Lovitz, and Kelly Preston in Casino Jack, a comedy about one of the biggest casino scandals of all time. To celebrate the film's April 8th release, JustPressPlay is giving away three copies. To find out how you can win, just keep reading.
The film revolves around Abramoff, an eccentric political mastermind who gets caught up in a
mega-scandal with Michael Scanlon (played by Barry Pepper, also seen in this year’s “True Grit”). While promoting the Indian gambling industry, Jack receives his title nickname, “Casino Jack,” and soon gets caught up with pal Michael in what was “touted as the biggest political impropriety to hit the Beltway since Watergate,” according to the film’s director George Hickenlooper. Isn't it fun watching shady characters rise and fall on the big screen? The best are the scenes of excess, when they're at the top of their game. Y'know, with the wads of cash, private jets and completely unnecessary champagne? It's thrilling to watch, because you know it's all going to come crashing down sooner rather than later.
'Casino Jack,' in theaters this week, is a great "rise and fall" flick, featuring Kevin Spacey in the title role. It's based on the life of super-shady lobbyist Jack Abramoff, a man who let greed and ego get the best of him. Abramoff was incredibly well-connected in Washington, D.C., and even claimed to have helped George W. Bush win the 2000 election by wielding his influence. In his eyes, W. owed him, big time. But when Abramoff became entangled in scandal, his friend in...

Welcome to No Fact Zone’s weekly roundup of cultural references on The Colbert Report. From Darcy to Danger Mouse, String Theory to Shakespeare, we’ve got the keys to this week’s obscure, oddball, and occasionally obscene cultural shout-outs (hey!)
Sveiki Zoners! Wow, what a somber and precarious situation to follow up. I was pleased with how Stephen and the writers handled it. The rest of the week was great, and stayed on point with the events that continued to unfold. Also, as someone married to a man with Lithuanian heritage (not recent, though), the bit on the Lithuanian national perfume was, by far, my favorite clip of the entire week. I never thought Stephen would give me such fodder for family gatherings. What were your favorites this week?

You can’t always go by your first impressions. When the story of uber-lobbyist Jack Abramoff first hit the news, the media seemed to rejoice in having a hiss-able bad guy. The cable news channels loved running the video of his “perp walk” complete with wardrobe by Boris Badenov ( matching black fedora and trench coat ). Early last year we got to know more of the full story with Alex Gibney’s documentary Casino Jack And The United States Of Money. And now the feature drama based on the true story of D.C. corruption has arrived at movie theatres: George Hickenlooper’s Casino Jack with Kevin Spacey in the title role. With this telling we learn much more about the real man behind the scandals ( and late night TV monologue jokes).

Chicago – The halls of the Capitol Building are paved with money. It takes a long time beyond civics class and history to realize that. Kevin Spacey illustrates that concept precisely playing “super lobbyist” and convicted larcenist Jack Abramoff in “Casino Jack”.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Jack Abramoff’s story is a typical eye glazer for the average news consumer, but his actions effect everyone all the time.It is his story as an arch conservative con man, spewing religion while at the same time robbing people blind. And it’s all legal because the guys he has in his pockets make the law.
Basically the story revolves around Abramoff and his partner Michael Scanlon (Barry Pepper), as they set up specific lobbying efforts on behalf of Native American casinos. They use these “retainers” from their clients to peddle influence with key people in Washington, including the new Speaker of the House, Tom Delay...

It's not unusual to hear that Jon Lovitz is the funniest part of a movie. It's more so to discover that that movie isn't a traditional comedy -- it's "Casino Jack," George Hickenlooper's caper-like take on the downfall of Jack Abramoff and the director's last before his death in October at age 47. Lovitz plays Adam Kidan, Abramoff's partner in a scheme to buy a casino cruise line in Florida. Unlike lobbyists Abramoff (played by Kevin Spacey) and his protege Michael Scanlon (Barry Pepper), Kidan is not in the business of self-delusion about his own nature. He's a former mattress salesman with mob ties who likes strippers, cocaine and frank talk, and in a story in which so many of the figures involved have convinced themselves that their greed somehow works toward the greater good, Lovitz's character is a breath of fresh air, an unabashed, amusing sleazebag. I got a...

Barry Pepper seems to be having one of the best years of his career. He’s got two films in theaters right now: the Coen brothers’ True Grit and the Jack Abramoff rise and fall story, Casino Jack. One being a near-masterpiece, guess which one, and the other being a fun satire. In True Grit, he plays a logical and almost likable lead antagonist, but as Michael Scanlon in George Hickenlooper‘s final film, he couldn’t be further from playing logical. Barry Pepper seems to be very comfortable at playing slimy. He did the perfect type of sympathetic slimy in the 25th Hour, and in Casino Jack, he does the same. And to top off having two films in the cineplex at one time, he also recently got to work with Terrence Malick… ever heard of him? Well, Pepper couldn’t talk at great length about that untitled project, but...

If you were to imagine a B-version of Goodfellas in the world of politics, you’d get Casino Jack. George Hickenlooper‘s final film is a a hit-and-mess tale of rise and fall. The story of Jack Abramoff should have been an epic. Abramoff’s story has been served in an enjoyable enough fashion, but it never reaches its fullest potential. This is a fun, minor film at best.
The film chronicles the rise and fall of the D.C. lobbyist and his minions. Here Abramoff being portrayed in an almost lampoonist fashion by Kevin Spacey. Most of the past decade has been a rough and disappointing one for Spacey, after the 1990s seemed made just for him. His filmography got filled with much beloved gems, but then, slowly but surely, got saddled with total mediocracy: Pay it Forward, K-Pax, The Life of David Gale and, who could forget, Edison Force.

When you come across a newsworthy item that strikes your creative fancy and feeds the instinct to turn it into some sort of screenplay is that you are not the only supplicant sipping from this particular muse's font. Jack Abramoff himself would fully appreciate this, both as an unsuccessful Hollywood screenwriter/producer and as a functionally-intellectual piece of human shit. If an idea is good, someone else is probably going to have it, and so you're gonna have to be the first to the finish line with the finished product, or else you're going to be considered derivative and lesser than. A Bug's Life trumped Antz, Dante's Peak edged out Volcano, Capote outcapoted Infamous, Armageddon aerosmithed Deep Impact, Tombstone made Wyatt Earp its huckleberry -- the streets of Hollywood are paved with the corpses of lesser flicks that were released within months of similar tales. Alex Gibney, who has been...

Read our round-table interview with Canadian actor Barry Pepper, who appears in the new biopic ‘Casino Jack.’ The Golden Globe and Emmy Award-nominated star portrays Michael Scanlon, a former communications director, lobbyist and public relations executive. Scanlon pleaded guilty in 2005 to conspiring to bribe a member of Congress and other public officials after committing various financial crimes with his business partner Jack Abramoff. Question (Q): The movie takes a very serious subject and makes it light-hearted. Did that make it interesting as an actor? Barry Pepper (Bp): I think when you research this story, the books that we did, like Heist and various others, you follow this papertrail, you look at [...]...

On Tuesday The Washington Post ran a short update on Jack Abramoff, who’s out of federal prison and on probation for the next three years. The article reported that he was leaving his workplace of the past six months, Tov Pizza in Baltimore. I remember my shock months ago upon first learning he’d taken a minimum wage job, but based on the man’s now toxic reputation and his unsavoriness as represented in the late George Hickenlooper’s Casino Jack, I realize I shouldn’t be surprised. Casino Jack stars Kevin Spacey as the man at the heart of 21stcentury America’s most resonant political scandal. He’s everyone’s favorite K Street boogeyman, “super lobbyist” Jack Abramoff. Casino Jack
Starring Kevin Spacey and Barry Pepper
Directed by George Hickenlooper
Rated R
Casino Jack is a quirky drama that chronicles the real life events surrounding well-known DC lobbyist Jack Abramoff, that took place between 2003 and 2005. Many of us may remember when the scandal broke, then labeled “the biggest political impropriety to hit the Beltway since Watergate.” Abramoff and partner Michael Scanlon were found guilty of three criminal felony counts related to defrauding American Indian tribes and public officials. Fascinated by this icon of greed and corruption, director George Hickenlooper set out to unearth the man behind the outrage, and in doing so, discovered the sheer hypocrisy of the American political system.
Kevin Spacey is positively electric as Jack Abramoff, who the film defines as a man torn between wanting the most out of the American dream, and an intense religious foundation and the desire to benefit the world.

Kevin Spacey has been nominated twice for an Oscar for American Beauty in 1999 and before that for his role as Roger 'Verbal' Kint in Bryan Singer's The Usual Suspects. Oh, and he also won the Oscar both of those times. However, it's now been over ten years since Spacey was nominated for an Oscar and as far as 2010 goes he's only got one opportunity, his role as Jack Abramoff in the recently deceased George Hickenlooper's Casino Jack, which finally hits theaters in New York and Los Angeles this coming Friday. Most people will recognize Casino Jack as that movie that got Rachelle Lafevre unceremoniously booted off of Twilight: Eclipse, but film fans will know that this is their next chance to see Kevin Spacey on the big screen. With co-stars Jon Lovitz, Kelly Preston and Barry Pepper, Jack might turn out to be one of the better movies of 2010. This clip shows off Spacey.s Jack Abramoff and his partner in crime Michael Scanlon putting around a quiet tarmac and shouting quotes from Jerry Maguire. It doesn.t give you much of a look into the greed and corruption bred by these two men, but you at least get the idea that all they seem to care about is money, which eventually leads to their downfall. As you may recall, Abramoff was sentenced to six years in prison for defrauding Indian tribes that offered him money due to his powerful...

Fresh from its purchase by Ato Pictures at Tiff, George Hickenlooper’s Casino Jack has a new trailer.
The film looks to be a fast and loose comedy about a “super lobbyist” played by Kevin Spacey. Touting some weak jokes and the always-dubious title card “based on true events” here it is:

Starring Kevin Spacey, Barry Pepper, Kelly Preston and “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” actress, Rachelle Lefevre, comes the new trailer for Casino Jack.
Based on the true story of Jack Abramoff, the American lobbyist and inspired by the documentary Casino Jack and the United States of Money, released earlier this year, the trailer looks slick to say the least. Kevin Spacey appears to be ideally cast as capitalist-turned-lobbyist Abramoff, who is currently serving six years in prison following a guilty plea to charges of conspiracy, honest services fraud, and tax evasion in 2006. Check out the trailer below courtesy of Apple and let us know your thoughts:

A new trailer has been released for Kevin Spacey's new film Casino Jack in which he plays disgraced ’super lobbyist’ Jack Abramoff. The film was recently picked up by Ato Pictures at Tiff.
This story is a pretty serious subject matter, but the trailer shows that there is going to be some humor in it to lighten the mood. According to this trailer there are going to be lots of other movie quotes quoted in this film.
Not sure what to think about his one, but I'm pretty sure I'll wait for it to come out on DVD.

• Toronto Report #2
Clint Eastwood's Hereafter considers the possibility of an afterlife with tenderness, beauty and a gentle tact. I was surprised how enthralling I found it. I don't believe in woo-woo, but there's no woo-woo anywhere to be seen. It doesn't even properly suppose an afterlife, but only the possibility of consciousness after apparent death. This is plausible. Many near-death survivors report the same memories, of the white light, the waiting figures and a feeling of peace.
The subject lends itself to sensationalizing and psychic baloney. Eastwood has made a film for sensitive, intelligent people who are naturally curious about what happens when the shutters close. He tells three primary stories. Their three central characters meet at the end, but please don't leap to conclusions. This is not one of those package endings where all the threads come together in a Coincidence that makes everything clear. They meet in...

Kevin Spacey will star in a new crime thriller called Bagman, which covers political corruption in the United States and this trailer shows politicians at their worst. Loosely based on a true story Spacey plays Jack Abramoff a "hustler" and swindler of First Nations People who offer casino projects on their tribal lands (Trailer). However, scandal and greed swindle the tribes out of profits as Abramoff proves that "democracy is...non-existent" (Trailer). View an early trailer for Bagman until the film releases in 2010 or early 2011.
A partial synopsis for the Bagman here:
"Lobbyists are known for being slick, charismatic, fast-talking schemers. But none are good as Jack Abramoff (Kevin Spacey). There’s nothing he won’t do to take care of his gorgeous wife Pam (Kelly Preston) and their beautiful kids. Pam joins Jack’s dad Frank in telling Jack to slow down, to be more careful. But they don...

George Hickenlooper made a pretty great decision when he cast Kevin Spacey as the lead in Casino Jack, the story of disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Now he's making a few more good choices as he rounds out the cast. Barry Pepper, Kelly Preston and Twilight's Rachell Lafevre have all been cast in supporting roles in the film, which is set to come out in March of next year. According to a press release from the producers, Pepper will play Abramoff's protege Michael Scanlon, Lafevre Scanlon's love interest, and Preston will appear as Abramoff's wife Pam. Hard to say between Pepper and Preston which has the juicier part; both of them will get to play off Spacey in full-on creep mode, which must be fun for any actor. Filming starts in May in Toronto, presumably not long after Lafevre wraps work on the Twilight sequel New Moon.

Variety posted casting news regarding George Hickenlooper's new film Casino Jack saying Kevin Spacey has signed on to star as the title character, disgraced Washington power broker Jack Abramoff. However, a trip over to IMDb reveals this must be old news and they even have several more names attached to the project. The true story-based thriller was written by Norman Snider and will feature Spacey as the once high-powered lobbyist whose bribery schemes and fraudulent dealings with Indian casinos ultimately landed him in prison. Filming is set to begin this month in Toronto, which leads me to believe the names on IMDb may actually be correct, but considering the site's track record on films in production take the following bit of news as rumor until otherwise confirmed. IMDb lists Hayden Christensen, David Cross, Christian Campbell, Christian Campbell and Jeffrey R. Smith as members of the cast. Christensen is listed as playing Michael Scanlon,...

Kevin Spacey will play the disgraced Washington power broker Jack Abramoff in the thriller, yes thriller, "Casino Jack."
George Hickenlooper ("Dogtown," "Factory Girl") is attached to direct from an original screenplay by Norman Snider ("Dead Ringers").
The film will tell Abramoff's fall from grace as a once high-powered lobbyist brought down by his fraudulent dealings with Indian casinos.
Hayden Christensen is in talks to star as Michael Scanlon, a former communications director who plead guilty to corruption charges in connection with Abramoff.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Kevin Spacey is currently in Washington D.C., paying a visit to Federal Prison so he can meet with ex-lobbyist and scandal magnet Jack Abramoff. Is Spacey somehow involved in one of Jack's frauds? Nope, it's research for a role in his latest film, with his director George Hickenlooper also tagging along.
The two of them are shooting a script by Dead Ringers writer Norman Snider called Casino Jack (which was Abramoff's nickname). They've been negotiating for weeks to get face time with the imprisoned Abramoff, who is apparently a Kevin Spacey fan. That's cute.
The film is likely to cause a bit of a stir if marketed right: it's a Goodfellas-style thriller about Abramoff's corrupt stint in Washington, wheeling and dealing with members of the Bush administration. The film supposedly even involves figures such as Karl Rove, and most likely Tom DeLay as well.

- It was on my radar and then suddenly the little blip on the screen disappeared. Originally Casino Jack, a documentary film on Jack Abramoff and directed by Alex Gibney was “a few months away from completion” and already acquired by Magnolia Films. How odd is it that Production Weekly announces that George Hickenlooper is making an indie drama going by the same title and which would feature Kevin Spacey as businessman/con man Abramoff and Hayden Christensen would play Michael Scanlon, Abramof's co-conspirator. My guess is that the documentary film, which would be Gibney's first since his Oscar win will be going by its (better) original title of "Burning Down the House". The doc goes into the murky world of political lobbying, featuring Abramoff who was sent to prison after being convicted on a series of criminal felony counts relating to his lobbying activities. Here is a reminder on
