Rob Reiner's 1986 film "Stand By Me" still stands as one of the best coming-of-age films of all time. An adaptation of acclaimed horror author Stephen King's "The Body," the film follows a group of friends who go on a hike to find the dead body of a missing boy. The compelling, deeply-moving film stars actors Will Wheaton (Gordie Lachance), River Phoenix (Chris Chambers), Corey Feldman (Teddy Duchamp), and Jerry O'Connell (Vern Tessio).
The movie is highly regarded for its performances, its authentic take on pre-teens and is a small-scale masterpiece. Aside from critical acclaim, "Stand By Me" earned an Oscar nomination for "Best Adapted Screenplay," but its most significant victory was that author Stephen King approved of it. In fact, the King of Horror yearned to have written a scene the way the film's creators conceptualized it.

How’s this for a show about nothing? With their mega-“Seinfeld”-to-Netflix deal, which insiders have valued at $500 million-plus, co-creators Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld continue to make huge money on a show that last aired a new episode during the Clinton administration. Both David and Seinfeld stand to make nine figures each, two people with knowledge of the breakdown told TheWrap. One pegged the windfall between $100-$125 million apiece, while a second told TheWrap it was significantly higher. Representatives for David, Seinfeld, “Seinfeld” studio Castle Rock Entertainment and its parent company Warner Bros., distributor Sony and buyer Netflix all declined to comment on this story. Of course, David, who famously played New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner on the series, and Seinfeld, who played a version of himself, are not the only ones making big bucks. Warner Bros. TV is taking home a big piece of the pie,...

Jane Jenkins, the casting director of “The Princess Bride,” looked at a lot of tall men for the part of the giant Fezzik. But in her mind, there was only one giant who could plausibly haul three people up the Cliffs of Insanity: André the Giant.
In speaking with TheWrap, Jenkins explained how André Roussimoff, better known as André the Giant and quite literally the biggest wrestler in the world, got out of a wrestling match in Tokyo and ended up cast in Rob Reiner’s cult classic comedy “The Princess Bride.” Jenkins and Reiner met with the book’s author William Goldman to find out just what they were dealing with.
“So this Fezzik character, this giant, what are we talking about? Am I looking for a basketball player,” Jenkins recalls asking Goldman. “Oh no, I want a giant like André the Giant,” was his reply, referring to the late star who is the subject of a new HBO documentary produced by Bill Simmons’ Ringer Films titled “André the Giant.”

The first problem was, Jenkins didn’t know who that was. “You don’t know who André the Giant is,” her friend told her at the time. “He is, pardon the pun, a huge wrestler!” (Roussimoff was billed to be 7 feet 4 inches tall.)
Jenkins then tracked down his contact at the World Wrestling Federation (now the WWE) and simply asked to meet him for a movie Reiner was directing. But they learned that André had a conflict with a wrestling match in Tokyo for which he would be paid millions, and unless they were willing to buy it out and match his salary, he was unavailable.
“So we did not have André the Giant,” Jenkins said. “So I proceeded to meet every tall person in L.A. and say ‘if you didn’t duck in through my doorway, you were way too short.'”

Among some of the other potential Fezziks, Jenkins met with Carel Struycken, another 7-footer who was already committed to do a part in “The Witches of Eastwick.” She met a Scottish man who was known as the strongest man in the world, but wasn’t “the tallest man in the world.” And she even met a man she described as being like Ichabod Crane who, when they shook hands, made her own hand feel like “an infant’s hand inside a catcher’s mitt.”
“He said in a British accent, ‘I see there are a lot of fight scenes. I have a rather awkward center of gravity. Would there be a double for me,'” Jenkins recalled. “I don’t think that we can double you,” she responded.
But as if bestowed by Miracle Max himself, André’s fight was canceled, so Reiner and producer Andrew Scheinman dropped everything — literally leaving during an audition — to fly out to Paris and meet the Frenchman. Reiner told TheWrap via email that Scheinman read lines along with André, and Reiner ultimately put all of Fezzik’s lines onto a tape recorder for André to study and learn.

In upcoming HBO doc, Reiner explains that André had auditioned for the part, but upon their first meeting, the filmmaker couldn’t understand a word he said. Reiner also added that André’s sensitive side came to define the cliche of the “gentle giant.”
“André the Giant” airs Tuesday, April 10, on HBO at 10 p.m.

The new deal, shepherded by Alan Horn, follows an aborted attempt several years ago to develop the property as a musical with composer Adam Guettel.
New York – "Inconceivable?" No, "As you wish."
Disney Theatrical Productions has announced plans to collaborate with William Goldman on a stage work based on his 1973 fairy tale, The Princess Bride, and on his screenplay for the beloved 1987 Rob Reiner film that became a cult classic.
The deal was shepherded by Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn, who was involved with the screen version during his tenure at Castle Rock. No timeline or creative team for the show has been announced. Nor has it been decided if the project will be a musical or a play, though given the Disney stage arm's predominant history with musicals, that seems a good bet.

The beauty of the Internet: You can read that intro when you “search inside this book” on Amazon. Sad news this evening, as writer, screenwriter, and director Nora Ephron has passed away at the age of 71.
It's hard to imagine the modern romantic comedy without the influence of Ephron, whose perceptive and humorous take on how the sexes interact set a template for a generation. It was Ephron's sense of humor that first got her noticed, pairing with (now celebrated writer) Calvin Trillin for a satirical newspaper that caught the eye of New York Post publisher Dorothy Schiff, who offered her a job. This began Ephron's journalism career that saw her write for a variety of publications including New York, Esquire, and The New York Times Magazine. In 1976, Ephron married Carl Bernstein of Watergate fame, and even did a draft of the screenplay for "All The President's Men" that ultimately wasn't used, but again, someone saw her talent and gave her a shot.

More than half the time the two veteran actors were actually chatting in front of a bluescreen and digitally inserted in locales such as Africa, France, Egypt and Hong Kong.I was a devoted fan of Reiner's early in his career when he made such great films as This Is Spinal Tap, The Sure Thing, Stand By Me and The Princess Bride. Chicago – Director Rob Reiner’s career is undeniably a shadow of what it used to be with critical failures like “The Bucket List,” “Alex and Emma,” and “Rumor Has It…” diminishing the fact that this talented man gave us “Stand By Me,” “This is Spinal Tap,” and “The Princess Bride.” “Flipped” certainly doesn’t merit consideration with Reiner’s best but it is closer to form than he has been recently and it’s a film that’s easy to fall at least halfway in love with if not fully flipping head over heels.

Gilbert is a shallow, self-indulgent, and arrogant woman. This person is not going on a journey of self-discovery, whatever the fuck that is. This person is abandoning her life. Chicago – Rob Reiner’s “Flipped” is not merely nostalgic for an era when life seemed simpler and sweeter but for an age when every minor detail meant the world and love was as simple as looking into the eyes of a new neighbor. We all remember the days when the smallest act of kindness or meanness changed everything and, thanks to two very strong central performances, “Flipped” captures the essence of those times in a gentle, sentimental romance.
Working from a script by Reiner & Andrew Scheinman, “Flipped” is a story of two neighbors destined to fall in love that’s told in near-constant narration. As we learn in the opening scene, Juli Baker (Madeline Carroll) fell for Bryce Loski (Callan McAuliffe) the day that he moved in across the street. He's comfortable in any genre, from horror (Misery) and comedy (This Is Spinal Tap) to serious drama (A Few Good Men). Reiner looks to continue his success with Flipped, a sweet and tender adaptation of Wendelin Van Draanen's best-selling young-adult novel. As the film prepares to open, Reiner called FilmCritic.com to discuss narration, music, and his penchant for telling the same story over and over again.Q: Flipped is the first movie since This Is Spinal Tap where you actually receive a writing credit. A: Yeah, well, I basically have written on every single film I've directed. But usually there is other material that it comes from and other writers involved. Whether it's Aaron Sorkin, Nora Ephron,...

If at least one Rob Reiner directed film isn't on your list of favorites, you're not trying hard enough. This is the man who directed The Princess Bride, Stand by Me, A Few Good Men, and Misery. When Harry Met Sally twisted the conventions of the Rom-Com. Whether you love or hate it, its effect on relationships has been palpable. Wry sarcasm tempering bittersweet sentimentality are the mark of Reiner's adaptations. The motherfucker made a good Stephen King film. Twice. But he's lost it. Over the last decade, he's been dropping a steady stream of clunky, misshapen, atrocious romantic-comedies on the market, each more clotting and progressively greasier, like the inside of his own arteries. Paired with his Castle Rock production partner Andrew Scheinman, Reiner decided to try to recapture the magic by trying a little old fashioned romance with the kids by adapting Wendelin Van Draanen's Flipped. It's a blisteringly melodramatic,...

Because it shares a time period and sense of nostalgia with the well-remembered Stand By Me (1986), Flipped has been pegged as an official companion piece for director Rob Reiner. There’s some validity to this, especially since the soundtrack is filled with familiar oldies, which also added to the earlier film’s appeal. But Flipped has a different mindset than Stand by Me, which dealt with boyhood camaraderie. It was adapted (by Reiner and his frequent collaborator Andrew Scheinman) from a popular juvenile novel by Wendelin van Draanen that not only touches on the first stirrings of attraction between a boy…...

Rob Reiner's new film "Flipped" is a beautiful piece of work, simple and sincere and wise, featuring a great ensemble cast ranging from their early teens to their seventies. It's great to see Reiner make a film that is every inch as warm and human and enjoyable as the films he made his name with in the early part of his career. It may be based on a novel, but Reiner wrote the adaptation himself, and his voice as a filmmaker has rarely been this crystal-clear. Reiner and his co-screenwriter Andrew Scheinman retained the unusual structure of the book by Wendelin Van...

Warner Brothers just released the first trailer for the coming age romance set in the 50s called Flipped. The movie is based off the novel of the same name by Wendelin Van Draanen. The film stars Madeline Carroll, Callan McAuliffe, Rebecca De Mornay, Anthony Edwards, John Mahoney, Penelope Ann Miller, Aidan Quinn and Kevin Weisman.
The studio plans to have a limited release of the movie on Aug. 6th (Los Angeles, Sacramento, Austin) and has it scheduled to open nation wide on August 27th. After watching the trailer I am not sure I am the main demo for this movie but I found it sort of charming and fun. I like the period setting and Rob Reiner’s ability to grab your heart in a movie. The young actors look like they know they can handle a lot too which is great.
