Jeff Goldblum’s iconic assertion in 1993’s Jurassic Park is not just one of the most instantly quotable lines in cinema history; it also neatly sums up the four-billion-year history of life on Earth in four short words (five if you count the none-more-Goldblum “uh” in the middle). Of course, the reality is far from that simple.
Now, 30 years later, the makers of Netflix’s phenomenally successful nature doc Our Planet have joined forces with the technical wizards at Industrial Light & Magic for an ambitious fleshing-out of that gigayears-old story of evolution.
A series nearly five years in the making, Life on Our Planet blends groundbreaking visual effects with state-of-the-art nature photography to tell the epic tale of how life has, indeed, found a way.

Oscar winner Morgan Freeman provides the narration for Netflix’s documentary series Life on Our Planet. The eight-part docuseries just launched a trailer that features a sampling of the many creatures who roamed Earth millions of years ago.
In notes provided by Netflix, producer Dan Tapster explained that they created the look of the dinosaurs by being as scientifically accurate as possible.
“Ultimately, the goal was to keep creative license to a minimum and try instead to have scientific veracity at the heart of each sequence. From an asset design point of view, that’s relatively straightforward since the designs are all based on fossils. However, sometimes there is disagreement amongst the paleontological community, and when that was the case, we always tried to position ourselves with the most widely held view,” stated Tapster.

From raging fires in North America to fatal floods in Germany and famine in Madagascar, the terrifying impact of man-made climate change is clear.
Natural history films are big sellers in global TV markets. But now there appears to be a new willingness from TV types to put uncomfortable truths regarding environmental damage alongside feel-good shots of beautiful beasts and pristine landscapes.
“Big-scale natural history shows have evolved radically in the past decade,” says BBC Studios Productions’ factual chief Tom McDonald. “Ten years ago, any environmental messages tended to be annexed in ‘the making of…’ section hived off at the end of the program.”

It’s been a strange year, but cinema endures. The 2021 British Academy Film and Television Awards took place at the Royal Albert Hall on the 11th of April, 2021. In a first in BAFTA history, four women have been nominated in the Director category, including Nomadland director Chloe Zhao, Sarah Gavron for Rocks, and Shannon Murphy for Babyteeth. Other notable nominees include Promising Young Woman, The Trial of the Chicago 7, The Father, Saint Maud and Minari. It is a diverse line up, and a very unusual time but the red carpets are rolling out, even if they are in living rooms around the world.
Yesterday director Ang Lee was entered into the BAFTA Fellowship, and Noel Clarke was awarded the Outstanding British Contribution to cinema. This evening Edith Bowman and Dermot O’Leary hosted the awards and it was a delight to see Yun-Jung Youn’s incredible win for her role in Minari.

It is the first time in BAFTA history that four women have been nominated in the director category.

Meanwhile, executive director Colin Butfield is a former executive director at international conservation charity the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) who worked with Silverback to conceive and produce the series “Our Planet,” its accompanying digital ‘Halo’ project and “David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet,” on which Hughes was also a director and producer.

Exclusive: All3Media CEO Jane Turton has told Deadline that the production group’s surprise deal to acquire Emmy-winning Our Planet producer Silverback Films gives it immediate access to a small, but elite pool of blue-chip natural history program makers.
Turton said All3Media has been courting Silverback founders Alastair Fothergill and Keith Scholey for years and was “proud” to get the under-the-radar acquisition over the line this week. Although she said All3Media was not looking at “filling gaps” in its portfolio, she admitted that the acquisition takes the company into a new and revered field of content production.
“It’s the right time — there is an enormous appetite for very high-quality natural history and there are very few people who can produce it. There is a huge scarcity factor,” said Turton, who has run All3Media since 2015. “We were keen [to buy Silverback] way back when. I was never quite sure whether...

Production and distribution powerhouse All3Media has acquired leading natural history producer Silverback Films.
Founded in 2012 by Alastair Fothergill and Keith Scholey (right), Silverback Films is the U.K.’s top natural history producer outside of the BBC Natural History Unit, and creates wildlife content for film and TV. Recent credits include the documentary “David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet”, which had a worldwide theatrical release at the end of September before launching on Netflix.
The deal is a tremendous coup for All3Media, which has been on the market for more production acquisitions in the last two years. The company’s portfolio spans 28 companies around the world, with key titles including “Fleabag,” “Call the Midwife” and “Liar.” While All3Media has a number of reputable unscripted production outfits in its wheelhouse, the acquisition of Silverback puts it firmly in the natural history space as a major contender going forward.

“I am David Attenborough, and I am 93.” So begins the latest (and potentially last) documentary that bears his name, as the revered English broadcaster and natural historian looks into the camera and reintroduces himself for the umpteenth time with all of his usual warmth and honesty. But such a pointed hello is enough to establish that “David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet” will be a bit different than “David Attenborough’s Natural Curiosities,” “David Attenborough’s Conquest of the Skies 3D,” and the scads of ecologically minded (and more generically titled) shows graced with his awe, curiosity, and brandied speaking voice.
For one thing, Attenborough is onscreen throughout much of this urgent film, which might surprise viewers who know him as the disembodied narrator of the epic nature series he’s made with the BBC in the Blu-ray era. Beyond that, it’s striking how Attenborough isn’t just...

Silverback Films made a splash last year with Emmy-winning natural history hit “Our Planet,” which quickly became Netflix’s most-watched docuseries soon after launching.
Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, the ground-breaking series mixed jaw-dropping scenes of nature with an urgent reminder to viewers that everything they are witnessing on screen is imperilled by human activity.
This month, Silverback returns with feature documentary “David Attenborough: A Life On Our Planet.”
Billed as Attenborough’s witness statement to the world, it documents the famed 94-year-old naturalist’s life in filmmaking, the destructive impact of humans on the natural world — and his vision for change to save the planet.
Backed by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the film has a theatrical release around the world from Sept. 28, and will then launch globally on Netflix this autumn, and is also accompanied by a book.

Disney+ finally launched in the UK during the last week of March with a fairly robust library that included a massive collection of The Simpsons from its recently-acquired Fox catalogue, but there was a little rough with the smooth, as the streaming service decided to include just two episodes of its flagship Star Wars live-action series, The Mandalorian, and there were some clear discrepancies between the bonuses of being a Us and UK subscriber – there hasn’t yet been a peep out of Disney+ on the whereabouts of Frozen 2, nor has there yet been any news of a premiere date for Pixar’s Onward or Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Also in the wind is the possibility that Marvel’s Black Widow, which has been removed from the theatrical release schedule due to the Covid-19 pandemic, might end up streaming on Disney+. As it stands, this...

Of the two Disneynature nature documentaries that arrive on Disney + on April 3, “Dolphin Reef” is the shorter and breezier of the two, and the one that doesn’t carry the news value of having Meghan Markle as a narrator, the way “Elephant” does. The film has also followed a meandering path to its release, coming out two years ago in France under the title “Blue” and changing its narrator from Cecile de France (for the French version) to Owen Wilson to Natalie Portman along the way.
And yet despite the delays and detours, “Dolphin Reef” is a satisfying entry in the Disneynature slate, albeit one where the dolphins in the title are upstaged by some of their supporting cast, and the reef itself is even more spectacular than the creatures who get the most screen time.

Out of the vast universe of nature documentaries, I don’t think I’m alone in finding films about life under the sea to occupy a special place. The very fact that they exist, of course, is amazing — though when you watch one, part of the wonder is that you’re not thinking about how aquamarine filmmakers actually hovered in the ocean depths to shoot this stuff. Jacques Cousteau, the pioneer of the genre, liked to place himself at the center of things, but the creators of “Dolphin Reef,” a Disneynature doc that drops on Disney Plus on April 3, simply get out of the way and let the ancient creatures of the sea seduce us with their surreal evolutionary form-follows-function wild splendor.
Shot around an idyllic chain of small Polynesian islands, “Dolphin Reef” does indeed trace the rituals, movements, and sheer shining beauty of a pod of bottlenose Pacific dolphins.

Natalie Portman has signed on to narrate Dolphin Reef, the next feature film from Disneynature. The pic will have its debut on Disney+, Disney’s new streaming service that launches November 12.
Dolphin Reef will continue Disneynature’s storytelling style as the film introduces Echo, a young Pacific bottlenose dolphin who can’t quite decide if it’s time to grow up and take on new responsibilities. Dolphin society is tricky, and the coral reef that Echo and his family call home depends on all of its inhabitants to keep it healthy. But Echo has a tough time resisting the many adventures the ocean has to offer.

In terms of scope, production time and — very likely — budget, Netflix’s “Our Planet” is one of the most ambitious projects from the streaming service to date. Narrated by David Attenborough and made available worldwide on April 5, the goal of the eight-part series is to capture diverse habitats across the globe and highlight the struggles of local wildlife as animals try to cope with climate change that threatens their existence.
To accompany the show, Netflix and the wildlife production company Silverback Films worked in tandem with the World Wildlife Fund to create an interactive website where viewers can watch added content and discover ways to help the cause of environmentalism.
The pricy project was filmed over four years in 50 countries, capturing tens of thousands of hours of footage in roughly 3,500 filming days from 600 photographers and filmmakers using some of the world’s most technologically advanced camera systems. Out of that massive crew,...

This eight-part Netflix series gives audiences a look at the wonders of the natural world, with narrator David Attenborough introducing us to various wildlife habitats. But there’s also a strong focus on the effects of climate change on those habitats. “We’d become very concerned by the way the natural world seems to be falling apart,” Scholey says, “so we wanted to have a really strong environmental story in there.”
The series aims to not only shed light on the problem, but offer fixes to it too. “The thing I always found most frustrating is that people think it’s unsolvable,...

As its poster promises, <em>Blue</em> features plenty of adorable gray dolphins swimming, diving, back-flipping, hunting and feasting on schools of fish with what look like permanent grins on their faces. But this latest Disneynature effort has more going for it than just the cute factor — most notably superb 4K cinematography that’s so vivid and crisp, you might as well be staring at a giant aquarium.
Directed by Keith Scholey (with Alastair Fothergill receiving a co-director credit), the documentary follows the titular animals as they do their thing around the world (the film was shot in a dozen locations ranging ...

Netflix continues to round out its slate of original non-fiction programming, this time with one of its biggest documentary projects yet. The streaming video service has ordered the eight-part nature docu-series Our Planet from the creators of BBC’s Planet Earth.
Filmed in Ultra HD 4K, Our Planet will explore remote parts of world and feature rare animals almost never seen by human eyes. The series will be produced by Silverback Films, with Alastair Fothergill and Keith Scholey leading the project. The filmmaking duo previously developed the documentaries Planet Earth, Blue Planet, and Frozen Planet for BBC, which later aired in the U.S. on the Discovery Channel.
Additionally, wildlife conservation organization WWF will assist in the creation of Netflix’s Our Planet series. WWF will provide the Silverback team access to protected habitats for filming purposes. The organization will also work with the production company to develop Our Planet-inspired multimedia content for various platforms.
