It was definitely an evening of “soul” at the second annual Society of Composers & Lyricists Awards, as the Pixar film “Soul” and the Latvian film “Blizzard of Souls” took the top prizes for outstanding original scores for 2020 films.
The “Soul” composing trio of Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste won for outstanding original score for a studio film, their second such prize in 48 hours after winning the Golden Globe Sunday night. Should it maintain this momentum through other ceremonies in the weeks to come, “Soul” could be the film to beat at Oscar time.
Batiste, music director for TV’s “Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” contributed the jazz material for the story about an aspiring jazz pianist whose life is cut short by an accident. Reznor and Ross wrote the dramatic score. Reznor and Ross, who were also nominated this year for “Mank,” are best known for their Nine...

The team of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross leads all nominees for the second annual Society of Composers and Lyricists Awards, the organization of scorers and songwriters active in visual media.
The composing duo (who won an Oscar 10 years ago for “The Social Network” and an Emmy last year for “Watchmen”) received three nominations. They were cited for outstanding original score for a studio film for both their 2020 films, Netflix’s “Mank” and Disney-Pixar’s “Soul.” They share the “Soul” nod with composer Jon Batiste, who contributed the jazz threaded throughout the film.
Reznor and Ross received a third nomination, for outstanding original song for visual media, for their song “(If Only You Could) Save Me,” written for “Mank.”
Scl’s list is notable for the dominance of women composers in the category of outstanding original score for an independent film — three of the five nominees: Lolita Ritmanis for the...

It’s not every day you get to sit down with a seasoned composer of the industry, and it was with great pleasure I got the chance to talk to Jason Graves, the man behind Far Cry Primal’s composition, as well as many other prolific games such as Dead Space, Tomb Raider’s 2013 reboot and Until Dawn, to name but three.
Primal itself is Ubisoft’s prominent left-turn from the otherwise modern setting the franchise had been routed in to this point. By literally having the game with an onscreen graphic rewinding time from 2016 all the way back to 10,000 BC, it required the team to reevaluate every game mechanic and ability, reworking them for an entirely new time period.
Honestly, whilst the game itself seems to be coming under fire for reusing too many of the same aspects as Far Cry 4, it’s become a personal early highlight of the year,...

Warner Bros. Interactive have released an all new trailer for Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, but instead of focusing on the gameplay, this trailer is all about setting the tone, and establishing the story that gamers will be playing through. Honestly, it's the most interesting this game has looked so far. On top of that, they've also revealed the voice cast you'll be hearing. Come inside to check it out and learn more!
Call me crazy, but for me, the most exciting things about video games are the stories. That's why I gravitate towards more story-focused games and never got into the Fps/multi-player genres. Story is what drives me to keep playing through, and as such, today's newest trailer has me more interested in Shadow of Mordor than before:
Lots of story going on here, and some interesting concepts that haven't really been explored in the Lord of the Rings license.

The short, fan-made video is a tribute to the "Legend of Zelda" hero's first boss fight.
According to creator Phil Summers over at Shamoozle, "Link's Triumph" was the result of a year of hard work for the solo animator. "The goal was to show how an inexperienced and ill equipped Link would go about fumbling through this situation," Summers explains, "and perhaps gaining a bit of confidence along the way."
The video was made with the help of composer Joe Moscareillo, with and assist from GoNintendo's Kevin Cassidy.

All of the Marines who came to Lv-426 are dead. Send more Marines.
Don't go looking for a lot of gameplay in this fast-cut trailer which simply functions as a plot delivery system for February's "Aliens: Colonial Marines."
The new story trailer ties together James Cameron's "Aliens" with Sega/Gearbox's upcoming shooter, which is set after the events of the 1986 film. Typically, with this kind of game the mystery is "what happened to the other troops," but since we know that already, Gearbox has added another pair of mysteries, it seems: how did the Sulaco end up in orbit again and who's the guy in the bag?
With the many callbacks to Cameron's film, it looks like Gearbox is making good on their promise to deliver something that is at least familiar in terms of this particular universe--now let's see how it plays.

It seems like we've been inundating you with posts about soundtracks over the last couple of days (probably because we have--yikes). And here's another one: "Bioshock" composer Garry Schyman is back to compose the music for "Bioshock Infinite."
Irrational Games' Ken Levine announced Schyman's involvement with the sequel during yesterday's Reddit Ama. Per Levine, the Irrational team was happy to bring Schyman back for a third go at the series, saying “We're proud to announce that Garry Schyman, composer of BioShock 1 and 2 has returned to the composer's chair for BioShock Infinite. His score is very different from the first two games, yet very much guided by the same aesthetic principles. We were lucky to have him and I can't wait until you get to hear some of his stuff. He's working in a different, sparer style, but it's awesome.”

Maybe the word “Ocarina” means nothing to you. It is a strange word. It could be the name of some long-lost defunct kingdom from Middle Europe, or perhaps a rare Eastern delicacy invented by Marco Polo to pad out his memoir. But if you’re someone of a certain age and temperament — someone who owned a Nintendo 64, in the long-ago era when videogame consoles were so resolutely un-chic that a major multinational corporation could actually create a controller seems specifically designed for tri-ped sewer mutants — then the word “Ocarina” can’t help but send you senselessly on a memory-spiral into...
