Graduate of Amherst College and Rhodes scholar at Oxford University. Best known for his contribution to most of the Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers musicals at RKO in the 1930s (under contract, 1934-1940). Also frequently brought in (uncredited) as a 'script doctor', repairing or improving the work of other screenwriters.
