Last year, the freshman installment of the Trial & Error TV show ran as a mid-season replacement series, and its ratings were unimpressive. After escaping cancellation, now it has returned as a summer sitcom. With the pressure off will its performance improve, or will the absence of John Lithgow and the smaller seasonal audience prove a life sentence? Will Trial & Error be cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned. *Status update below.

Crime comedy Trial & Error is still without a new home following the cancellation by NBC, and there are no current prospects for a third season. “We are open to an opportunity to continue the series, should one arise in the future,” producing studio Warner Bros. TV said in a statement.
When NBC opted not to pick up a third season last August, the rights reverted back to Wbtv. Since options on the series’ regular cast had not expired yet, Wbtv used the window to shop the show elsewhere, but without success. I hear the options of the cast have expired since then and, should the concept be revived in the future, new deals need to be made with actors, which makes a third season even more unlikely.

Court has officially adjourned for Trial & Error. Sources confirm to TVLine that NBC has formally passed on ordering a third season of the low-rated mockumentary comedy, and Warner Bros.’ efforts to find the show a new home have proved unsuccessful.
The deadline for the Peacock Net to renew the series passed back in August, although the network stopped short of declaring the show dead. Regardless, Warner Bros. began shopping the sitcom to other platforms, to no avail. A Warner Bros. insider, however, says the studio remains open to resurrecting the series, should a suitor step forward.

It’s very possible that Trial & Error‘s Josh Segal and his ragtag legal team have worked their last case, seeing as the NBC comedy’s fate is still up in the air.
But did they manage to pull off one last victory?
In the final two episodes of Trial & Error‘s second season, Josh & Co. exhaust every option to prove that Lavinia Peck-Foster, and not Jesse Ray Beaumont, was responsible for the murder of Lavinia’s brother, Chet.

It seems the Murder Board could be getting erased for good.
The fate of NBC’s mockumentary comedy Trial & Error is up in the air, now that the deadline has passed for the Peacock Net to renew the series for Season 3.
According to our sister site Deadline, production studio Warner Bros. TV will begin shopping the show to other platforms. The contracts for series-regular cast members, meanwhile, have not yet expired, which could raise the likelihood of the series finding a new home.
An NBC source tells TVLine that the network has not formally cancelled the show, despite the renewal deadline having passed.

I have learned that NBC’s option to renew Trial & Error for a third season has lapsed, reverting the rights to the crime comedy back to producing studio Warner Bros TV. I hear the options on the series’ regular cast have not expired yet, and Wbtv will be using the window to shop the show elsewhere.
With its serialized nature — each season following a different murder case — Trial & Error looks better suited for binge viewing on a streaming platform. The comedy’s first season, which was well reviewed, starred John Lithgow, and the current second season, headlined by Kristin Chenoweth, received even stronger reviews (91% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes vs. 86% in Season 1).
On NBC, Trial & Error’s linear ratings have been modest and expectedly slipped from Season 1 to Season 2 as the series moved from in-season to summer. NBC has been double pumping originals, but two weeks and four episodes...

Turning a murder case into anything close to comedy is a tricky proposition, even when the victim is a fictional character. But over the course of two seasons, NBC’s “Trial and Error” has turned that challenge into a jumping-off point; it throws off distinctions of sitcom, parody, and TV legal proceedings and makes a story that’s wholly its own.
Where other shows might make the central attorney at the heart of each case the series’ beating heart, Josh Segal (Nicholas D’Agosto) is more of an idealistic conduit of relative calm around which the future of his law career and the town of East Peck exist in a constant state of flux. After successfully guiding his ragtag group of colleagues through the trial of Larry Henderson (John Lithgow), Josh gets an even bigger challenge: defend the beloved, extravagant Lavinia Peck-Foster (Kristin Chenoweth), who’s charged with killing her husband.

In its first season, the NBC sitcom criminally (pun intended) skated under the radar despite featuring John Lithgow as an earnest accused murderer in a sharp parody of the “The Staircase” true crime documentary. Hopefully, its very solid second season – featuring Kristin Chenoweth as an eccentric heiress in a sharp parody of “The Jinx” – will get more people to realize what they were missing.
East Peck, South Carolina, the fictional town at the heart of “Trial & Error,” feels like a bizarro world Pawnee, Indiana with a heavy drawl. Its citizens are fiercely loyal to the strange idiosyncrasies of their beloved town, and woe betide the stranger who tries to suggest they might know better. “Trial & Error” initially highlighted East Peck’s oddities by bringing in Josh Segal (Nicholas D’Agosto), an optimistic rookie lawyer sent from New York to cover a murder case whose “Northeastern” roots earned him widespread skepticism.

Actor-producer Michael Hitchcock (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) is set for a recurring role opposite Kristin Chenoweth and Nicholas D’Agosto on the upcoming second season of NBC’s anthology comedy series Trial & Error.
Created by Jeff Astrof and Matt Miller, Trial & Error is a spoof of crime documentaries, which follows a case through trial.
Per NBC’s description, the second season of this outrageous fish-out-of-water comedy centers on bright-eyed New York lawyer Josh Segal (D’Agosto), still relatively a newcomer in a tiny southern town, who is sturdily posed for his next big case there. His mission? To defend the eccentric first lady of East Peck, Lavinia Peck-Foster (Chenoweth), known for her flamboyant outfits, large hats and hairless cat, and who suddenly finds herself accused of the bizarre murder of her beloved husband.”
