Warner Brothers studio used a cover version of Smith's 1955 composition "Feudin' Banjos" and renamed it "Dueling Banjos" for use in
Deliverance (1972). Banjo player
Eric Weissberg, who recorded "Dueling Banjos" for the movie, said he'd grown up playing that piece and thought it was an old traditional song with no known writer, and nobody bothered to check. Smith sued Warner Brothers for using his song without permission, and won substantial royalties.
