“Knuckles,” the live-action/animated spinoff series currently streaming on Paramount+ and featuring the titular red Echidna warrior (voiced by Idris Elba), kicks things off with an amusing ’90s throwback opening title sequence. We encounter markered animations (done by Picturemill) of the main characters, as they jump across the labels of mixed CDs in a binder and roll by the credits, to the tune of “The Warrior” by Scandal featuring Patty Smyth.
It’s all part of Knuckles getting introduced to the “earth music” of his new protégé, dim-witted deputy sheriff Wade Whipples (Adam Pally), while trying to teach him the ways of Echidna-style fighting.
This marks the first series for Knuckles, based on Sega’s popular Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise, which takes place between the events of the films “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” which introduced Elba. It was created by John Whittington (“Sonic the Hedgehog 2...

As the film landscape’s obsession with cinematic universes continues – hell, there’s even a horror-themed Poohniverse in development – Paramount has its (speedy) sights set on expanding its Sega-assisted Sonic-verse between big-screen sequels. Enter Paramount+ spin-off miniseries Knuckles – another live-action/CGI hybrid production, like the big-screen outings – arriving before this year’s Sonic 3 (set to introduce Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog), expanding the family-friendly franchise with a show focused around the Idris Elba-voiced Echidna.
Die-hard fans looking for mythology deep-dives and tidbits setting up the Blue Blur’s next instalment should, however, temper their expectations. Josh Homme hosted an all-star benefit concert in support of his Sweet Stuff Foundation at the Belasco in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Over the course of the evening, he welcomed friends and collaborators to the stage, including Dave Grohl, Beck, St. Vincent, The Kills, Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Matt Helders of Arctic Monkeys, Jesse Hughes of Eagles of Death Metal, Bill Burr, and more.
Not surprisingly, Grohl provided several highlights. He went head to head against Smith in a drum off, and briefly attempted to sing a duet of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Sound of Silence” with Homme. Later, after joking that he attempted to learn how to play Doja Cat’s “Paint the Town Read” to no avail, he instead debuted an entirely new song he wrote about Homme.

American former professional tennis player John McEnroe has been married twice, first to Tatum O’Neal and then to Patty Smyth. While his volatile marriage to O’Neal produced three children, he has two daughters with his second and current wife. The tennis legend’s first marriage ended acrimoniously, but his marital commitment to Smyth seems destined for happily ever after. On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Pregnancy Really Suits Arnold Schwarzenegger
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a movie star in possession of a comically large body, must be in want of a comically small scene partner. Every muscular action star eventually reaches a point when it’s time to pivot to comedy — and nothing smoothes that transition quite like a pint-sized foil who isn’t afraid to be sassy.
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito struck box office gold in 1988 with “Twins,” a blockbuster comedy that dared audiences to imagine the physically mismatched actors as long lost brothers.

Depeche Mode, the pioneering ‘80s U.K. technopop band, has long had a strong following in Los Angeles — thanks to their exposure on local alternative stalwart Kroq — and now they’re proving a favorite of film and TV creative executives.
The group, consisting of co-founders Martin Gore and vocalist Dave Gahan after the death of keyboardist Andrew Fletcher in May 2022, is on a roll following its 2020 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where they were introduced by Charlize Theron, who called them “the soundtrack of my life.”
Depeche Mode’s new Mute/Columbia Records album, “Memento Mori,” comes out March 24, their first since 2017’s “Spirit” and 15th overall, which will be followed by a year-long tour that launches March 23 in Sacramento and includes a show at L.A.’s Kia Forum on March 28 and four concluding area shows in December, two apiece at Kia and Crypto.com Arena.

You cannot be serious! Legendary tennis player John McEnroe, known for his emotional volatility as much as for his staggering on-court greatness, is stepping into the spotlight once again. This Showtime documentary from director Barney Douglas is an intimate, candid exploration of McEnroe as revealed by the man himself as he walks the New York City streets at night. Featuring home videos and previously unseen footage from his epic matches at the US Open and Wimbledon, McEnroe is a journey into the heart and soul of an athlete whose quest for perfection took him to some very dark places. “Thirty-seven psychologists and psychiatrists didn’t help,” McEnroe notes at one point in the doc, which sees him examine his memory to explore why a need for connection both drove him and nearly broke him. It also features contributions from his children and wife Patty Smyth, to take it beyond a...

Ralph Schuckett, a keyboard player best known as a member of Todd Rundgren’s Utopia as well as an in-demand session player and producer and, later, composer for “Pokemon” and other animation projects, died Sunday at 73.
No cause of death was immediately given, although he was known to have been ill. When a Utopia reunion tour was announced in early 2018, Schuckett was announced as part of the lineup and even met with other members for a publicity photo, but he was forced to withdraw shortly before rehearsals began.
Among his early studio credits prior to joining Utopia were Carole King’s first three albums, including the landmark “Tapestry.”
“Ralph Schuckett was a sweet guy, a great friend, and a very talented cat,” King said in a statement Wednesday morning. “That’s his sparkling piano on ‘Smackwater Jack.’ Rest In Peace and love.”

Patty Smyth joined Jimmy Fallon Wednesday to mark the end of the President Donald Trump era with an updated version of her hit “Goodbye to You.”
Fallon kicked off the Fall 2020 rendition: “Four years with you in charge went so very slow/Now the time has come for us to let you go/You tweeted ‘Fraud,’ ‘Stop The Count,’ ‘Fake News’/Pennsylvania must hurt so bad to lose/It’s not a pity to say…”
That’s when Smyth popped up to hit the chorus: “Goodbye to you! Goodbye to you-ouuu!”
From there, Fallon and Smyth traded lyrics. While they were both in Fallon’s “Tonight Show” studio at 30 Rock, the duet-ing duo stayed socially distanced.
Like: “Will we ever see a president like we saw in you?/Stare directly at the sun/toilet paper on your show.”
And: “Ignored Fauci and fell for Kim Jong-un/Said you’d shoot someone on Fifth Avenue.

We adore Netflix's Glow for its depiction of female friendship, its powerhouse cast, and of course, its unapologetically '80s soundtrack. Season two opened with Patty Smyth's energetic anthem "Warrior" playing to the electrifying neon pink title sequence. The nostalgic '80s music was here to stay. In fact, the show even blessed fans this season with original kitschy '80s-inspired music videos, which showcased, besides ludicrous lyrics, songstress Kate Nash's (who plays Rhonda) vocals.
While not all of season two's songs are from the '80s - Aretha Franklin's emotional '70s ballad "You're All I Need To Get By" is in the mix - most featured tracks pay homage to the neon-covered decade. There's something about moody lyrics set to drum machines and poppy synths that puts you in a sing-along mood, you know? From Run-dmc's upbeat "It's Like That" to Starship's "Nothing's Going to Stop Us Now,...

Music makes such a huge difference when it comes to enjoying TV’s top shows, on a level that goes well beyond a theme song. Great composers create an aural language that’s as tangible and essential as the actors or sets on screen, aided by music supervisors who discover undiscovered tracks as well as essential classic gems —without which the show’s most powerful moments would have no impact.
Even the Television Academy agrees: For this first time, this year the Emmy Awards handed out a prize for outstanding music supervision. Susan Jacobs won the award for the “Big Little Lies” episode “You Get What You Need.”
There were so many shows that changed the way music was used on television this year — whether it was Tom Petty’s “American Girl” becoming a shout of protest, an obscure Elvis Presley cover becoming one of our favorite tunes of the year,...

Billy Joel made a strong statement against the growing neo-Nazi and white nationalism movement on Monday night, taking the stage at New York’s Madison Square Garden wearing a yellow Star of David.
The 68-year-old hitmaker, who was born to Jewish parents and describes himself as culturally Jewish, donned the patch on both the lapel and back of his suit blazer — a reference to the yellow stars Jews were forced to wear during the Holocaust.
It was a surprisingly political statement from Joel, who previously told Rolling Stone that he found being lectured about political views at a concert to be a turnoff.

Tennis champion John McEnroe admits in his upcoming memoir that his then-teenage sons stole marijuana from his personal stash.
But Seriously — McEnroe’s second memoir — releases on June 27 and details his difficult transition from tennis champion to full-time father and broadcaster. In it, he writes that his second wife, Patty Smyth, had previously encouraged him to stop smoking pot.
He ignored her request, and writes that he only stopped once he was embroiled in a courtroom battle with ex-wife Tatum O’Neal. It was during the custody battle that he learned his older kids had been stealing from his personal supply.

Back at the beginning of July in the daily Briefs, I started the Official snicks Top 100 Lost Hits of The 80's, spotlighting the 100 greatest minor hits of that decade. The songs you don't hear on any 80's nostalgia show. Songs that missed the top ten, or top twenty ... or top forty, and over the last five months I hope some of these forgotten gems may have rung a long dormant bell, or for younger readers, provided a pop music history lesson.
Here is the complete list, including my favorite lost song of the decade. Thank you for taking this 80's road trip with me ... but it's not over yet! I'll be featuring a new Lost Hit once a week in the Wednesday Briefs, so the history lesson will continue!
Let the countdown commence, and remember ... keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars!

A music boss wants to turn Natalie Portman into a pop star, after an April Fool's Day prank created a storm of publicity.
On Tuesday Rob Hitt, the head of Independent label I Surrender, circulated the false story that Portman had signed a deal with the company to make an album that was "Patty Smyth, but folksier".
Hitt even created a forged MySpace page to accompany the tale.
And after a wave of support and interest from music fans and Portman devotees, Hitt has decided to call for the actress to try her hand at music for real.
He tells the New York Daily News, "We got so much positive feedback, let's see what she's got."...
