In the realm of dark musical delights, 2013 has been quite a historic year: legends in their respective genres returned and/or reunited, while others marked the swan songs of their careers; iconic artists turned out some of their finest work, while some innovative up-and-comers set loose fresh and evil earworms on our collective brains. Honestly, it was damn near impossible for me to narrow the list down to just thirteen entries – a mere Top 10 was out of the question – and cutting names felt like chopping off my own extremities (which I'll admit would be an impressive journalistic statement, but could lead to unpleasant side effects I'd rather not deal with). Still, I found a way to make it work. Well... okay, I cheated, actually. More on that later. But for now, let's cycle back through 2013 – definitely a banner year for scary sounds! Fall 2013 has been a damn good season for horror game soundtrack fans, with a variety of entertaining scores coming down the pipe – ranging from purely fun entries like the hard-rocking Zombie Squash to big studio-quality symphonic epics like Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. An even more colorful variety of styles comes together in the soundtrack for Dead Rising 3, the latest entry in Capcom's hit zombie-slaying game series that began as a Dawn of the Dead homage and quickly expanded to World War Z proportions. The third chapter takes the music to the next level, involving not only acclaimed composers like Brian Reitzell (30 Days of Night, Hannibal), Jeremy Soule (Elder Scrolls, the Harry Potter game series) and returning Dead Rising composer Oleksa Lozowchuk, but also a host of talented cyber-rockers including FEARnet fave Celldweller. The standard edition album weighs in at 40 tracks across two CDs, the bulk of which is dedicated to Lozowchuk's score and source cues,...

However lukewarm the reception was for Capcom's 'Remember Me', the majority of the reviewers agreed on one positive point about the game: its soundtrack was remarkable. Its composer, Olivier Deriviere adeptly uses various musical styles and consciously toys with familiar orchestral textures with positive results. As a cohesive soundtrack release, 'Remember Me's' compiled music conjures images of an unmade Philip K. Dick film.
If you've ever listened to a soundtrack before watching a film or playing a game, you often run the risk of spoiling yourself on the pacing and the ebb and flow of the narrative. You can certainly imagine a story play out in your head as you listen to 'Remember Me's' soundtrack, but at the same time, each track can stand on its own. The one exception is the track titled 'Fragments', a repetitive piece that fits well in the context of the game,...

Plus, developer Gaia Interactive's Monster Galaxy soundtrack hits the top 20 on iTunes and renowned composer Howard Shore releases a second volume of his Soul of the Ultimate Nation soundtrack.
This week was nuts with new game music announcements, and I'm going to try to wrap all of them up for you. There's a lot to get through, so let's do this:
Bear McCreary scores shooter Moon Breakers: The Battlestar Galactica and The Walking Dead composer lent his talents to the free-to-play space shooter from developer Imba Entertainment. You can actually grab the Moon Breakers Ep on iTunes now.
You guys really like the Monster Galaxy soundtrack: The 26-track album from composer Jeremy Soule climed the iTunes charts this week. Could it be because publisher Artistry Entertainment is practically giving it away for $0.99?
Lord of the Rings conductor Howard Shore releases Soul of the Ultimate Nation Vol. 2 on July 10th: Shore...

Last week it was all about the 2012 BAFTA Film Awards, and now sees our attention turn to gaming with the announcement of the nominees for the BAFTA Video Game Awards 2012. We were there last year and hope to be covering it again this year. But in the meantime here’s the full list of nominees, featuring the cream of the crop of video gaming.
Personally I hope Uncharted 3 sweeps the board in all the categories its nominated in, and – being a Mario fan – I hope Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 pick up awards… although Dead Space iOS could give them a run for the money in the handheld categories!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim is the latest in a franchise that has dominated the open world RPG. In 2006, Oblivion wowed audiences with it’s huge sprawling vistas and incredible wealth of content. Yet, five years is literally an age in gaming and while we are still using the same hardware, what can be done with it has evolved hugely. So does Skyrim raise the bar for the series or rehash Oblivion’s past glory? Well it is easy to say that Skyrim has improved upon Oblivion in every way.
The most notable upgrade is the new graphics engine Bethesda created for the game. Oblivion may have looked amazing in 2006 but now it looks pretty terrible and Bethesda have addressed this with a stunning graphics engine that squeezes so much more out of your console than you thought possible. There are still graphical limitations due to the huge open world,...

Bethesda Game Studios The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a celebration of fantasy gaming. It operates on a grand scale, but doesn’t lose sight of intimate details; it’s elaborate, but eminently fun and very playable.
The latest installment in the Bethesda Game Studios role-playing series came out in the U.S. Friday for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC after around three years of development. It follows the highly regarded Oblivion chapter, which sold...

The fifth game in The Elder Scrolls series is released tomorrow. You may have heard of it? Skyrim? No, ok maybe you missed it. Well in celebration of this I wanted to highlight one of my favourite aspects of the Elder Scrolls games since Morrowind, and that is the music of Jeremy Soule.
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Soule came to the series in game III, Morrowind and created what has now become The Elder Scrolls Theme. A sweeping epic that stirs the soul and makes you want to reach for a shield and a sword, or a bow and an arrow. Or perhaps raise your hands in anger and shoot lightning from your finger tips. Yes it is epic, but listen to the opening melody, beautifully orchestrated with woodwind and slow strings that pluck at your heart like the harp that is picking out the melody. From there it builds into a heroic,...
