If you wish to be a writer, write. Quentin Tarantino has always considered himself a writer first and a filmmaker second. With his long-rumored tenth and final film on the horizon, and his newfound life as a family man, Tarantino is finally starting to wind down the purring motors of his director mind in order to transition to a more sedentary lifestyle as an author. Speaking to Rolling Stone's Peter Travers when his ninth film,"Once Upon A Time in Hollywood," was nominated for 10 Oscars in 2020, Tarantino shared his vision for the next phase of his career.
"I kind of feel this is the time for the third act [of my life] to just lean a little bit more into the literary, which would be good as a new father, as a new husband," he reflected. "I can be a little bit more of a homebody, and become a little bit more of a man of letters.

Quentin Tarantino is one of the most knowledgable film geeks in the world, so it’s no surprise he has some fond–and colorful–memories of going to the movies when he was a kid.
Appearing on Friday’s episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, Quentin Tarantino recalled catching the western 100 Rifles at the cinema. 100 Rifles stars the great Jim Brown, sex symbol Raquel Welch and Burt Reynolds, who was originally signed on to play George Spahn in Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood before dying in 2018.
Tarantino isn’t even a big fan of 100 Rifles–he once called it “mediocre”–but that particular cinemagoing experience left a major mark on the young Quentin. It was, he recalled, the first time he ever heard the phrase “suck my dick!”. It should be noted that that line isn’t in the movie but rather was shouted by a fellow moviegoer.

Part of a unique Hollywood household with three stars on the walk of fame, the much-loved character actor, currently starring in The Artist’s Wife, veers characteristically off-script to reflect on his storied 60-year career
“Wait a minute, let me tell you about this first,” says Bruce Dern, embarking on what I think is his fifth discursive anecdote in six sentences. “Did you ever see Once Upon a Time in Hollywood? Do you remember when Brad Pitt comes in and tries to wake me up?” he asks.
You mean when Pitt (playing the fictional stuntman Cliff Booth) visits your character?...

Quentin Tarantino loves movies. He says he won’t be making them soon, but that doesn’t diminish his appreciation for the art of motion pictures. The Pulp Fiction director signed a two-book deal with Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, to do a deep dive into what he loves most about Hollywood, according to Deadline: 1960s and ‘70s cinema. Tarantino will write a Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood novelization and give an overview of his favorite period in film with Cinema Speculation.
Tarantino also loves books. He got grounded for shoplifting Elmore Leonard’s novel The Switch when he was 15, according to Quentin Tarantino: The Pocket Essential Guide (2004) by D.K. Holm. Leonard’s influence is all over Tarantino’s works, and the filmmaker is paying it forward. “In the ’70s, movie novelizations were the first adult books I grew up reading,” Tarantino said in a statement via Deadline.

Aging like a fine wine (aka the opposite of too many whiskey sours), Quentin Tarantino’s latest film Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood continues to blossom like one of the director’s finest works over a year after release. Now, as the filmmaker looks towards wrapping up his career behind the camera with perhaps one final film, he has suggested he would get more into writing, and he’s now confirmed that desire by signing a two-film book deal.
Tarantino has inked the deal with HarperCollins and first up will be an expansion of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood with a new novel. Said to offer “a fresh, playful and shocking departure from the film,” according to the publisher, it will arrive as a mass market paperback, akin to the director’s pulp paperback favorites, alongside e-book and digital audio editions, this coming summer. Quentin Tarantino has signed a two book deal with Harper, the HarperCollins imprint. First up is Tarantino’s first work of fiction, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, a novel to be published next summer that breathes new life into the characters and the premise of a film that got 10 Oscar nominations and won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Brad Pitt. Tarantino has long been infatuated with the movie novelizations he read voraciously growing up, paperbacks that accompanied a film’s release. He has set in that tradition a book that teases out the characters played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Pitt. Appropriately, the throwback novel will start as a Harper Perennial mass market paperback, alongside e-book and digital audio editions. A deluxe hardcover edition will follow in the fall.

During his opening monologue at the Golden Globes last month, Ricky Gervais announced, “It was a big year for pedophile movies — ‘Surviving R. Kelly.’ ‘Leaving Neverland.’ (pause) ‘The Two Popes.'” The audience erupted in laughter but I felt sick to my stomach. What about “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” a film that went on to win three of the top awards that night, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy?
Quentin Tarantino’s new movie includes Timothy Olyphant in a supporting role as James Stacy, an actor on the real-life Western TV show “Lancer” (starring Leonardo DiCaprio’s fictional Rick Dalton in the film) who was a serial pedophile. Thanks to the critical, box office and award-winning success of writer/director Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon A Time In... Hollywood", actor Brad Pitt who plays movie stunt double, bodyguard 'Cliff Booth' in the film, is open to reprising his character for an extended episode, 'streaming mini-series', featuring new content and character backstories:
"...I look at a mini-series where you can spend much more time on characters and story and explore angles you don't always get to do in films", said Pitt.
"So much of these films end up on the cutting room floor because they just don't fit in that box.
"That's why I think it's interesting that Tarantino previously took 'Hateful Eight' and ostensibly repurposed it as a three-part series. It's almost the best of both worlds.
"You have the cinema experience that exists, but you can actually put more content into the series format."

Quentin Tarantino’s bittersweet intersection of fact and fiction in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” takes a creepy turn when introducing the hippie Manson Family, who lived at the rundown Spahn Movie Ranch during the lead up to the infamous Sharon Tate murders in August, 1969. Naturally, Tarantino couldn’t resist riffing on “Night of the Living Dead.”
“What’s neat — and I can’t truly take credit for it — is just the mise-en-scene,” Tarantino told IndieWire’s Anne Thompson. “It’s the production design [by Barbara Ling]. One of the best sets I ever had of any of my movies was rebuilding the Spahn Ranch. And we did a wonderful job casting those gals. It’s scary and it is creepy. We’re not doing anything to make anything scary or creepy, it just is. It’s a wonderful alchemy we captured and I didn’t break the mood.”

Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, the latest epic from Quentin Tarantino, is not, as you may already know, a historically accurate depiction of the Manson Family murders. Given the director’s work, it’s not all that surprising; as evidenced by Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained, revisiting historical atrocities and making sure the good guys win (and in as badass, comically violent a fashion as possible) is kind of his thing. The “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” Bruce Lee fight scene may be getting all of the attention in the wake of the film’s release, but another scene in Tarantino’s latest almost caused a similar level of controversy. One of Tarantino’s biggest set-pieces in “Hollywood” takes place at the Spahn ranch, a former production location for many Westerns that served as the home for the Manson Family cult in 1969. Brad Pitt’s stuntman Cliff Booth visits the ranch after driving the hitchhiker Pussycat (Margaret Qualley) home. Cliff intends to say hello to ranch owner George Spahn (Bruce Dern), an old friend from the movie business, but Pussycat and the Manson Family complicate what should be a simple reintroduction.
In an interview with HuffPo, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” production designer Barbara Ling reveals that rebuilding the Manson Family caused some panic among Los Angeles area locals.

While the Bruce Lee fight sequence in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” continues to stir up controversy, the director has revealed that one of the sequence’s defining lines of dialogue was actually written by the late Burt Reynolds. Speaking to Sight & Sound magazine (via Uproxx), Tarantino revealed it was Reynolds who came up with the insult Bruce Lee says to Brad Pitt’s character Cliff Booth. As tension grows between the two on the set of “The Green Hornet,” Lee tells Cliff, “You’re kind of pretty for a stunt guy.”

Quentin Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson are good friends, but that doesn’t mean they can’t nitpick one another’s work. During a recent appearance on The Ringer podcast, Tarantino detailed the one flaw that’s impossible to overlook in Anderson’s 1997 breakthrough drama “Boogie Nights.” The flaw concerns the character played by Burt Reynolds, who was set to play ranch owner George Spahn in Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” before his death.
“I think Burt Reynolds is fantastic in the movie,” Tarantino said. “Me and Paul have talked about this, though. I actually think there is a slight flaw in ‘Boogie Nights,’ and the flaw is the perception of the Burt Reynolds’ character. Paul can say he’s not based on the director Gerard Damiano, who directed ‘Deep Throat,’ but he obviously is. He looks exactly like him, and Damiano has a very unique look.

Minor spoilers for “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” below.
There’s a moment midway through “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood” where Rick Dalton, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, finally loses it. While describing the plot of a book he’s reading to his young co-star, he breaks into tears as he realizes that the book’s story of a past-his-prime gunslinger hews too close to his own life. All the missed opportunities, bad decisions, and regrets that have plagued him since the film’s start finally overwhelm him.
Bruce Dern knows exactly how that feels.
“That moment where he freezes and chokes up…I’ve been there,” Dern told TheWrap. “I was there much earlier in my career because I had such a hard time getting out of TV and into movies, and I was by no means a TV star.”

Turning back the clock 50 years in Los Angeles was no easy task for the crew members behind “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”
False fronts were created, vintage dishes were resurrected and historic movie posters were reprinted, but it was the use of actual locations that help make the film a truly immersive experience for the audience.

The Regency and Village Theaters

False fronts were created, vintage dishes were resurrected and historic movie posters were reprinted, but it was the use of actual locations that help make the film a truly immersive experience for the audience.
Here’s Variety‘s guide to the legendary locations from “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” that you can still visit today.

(Spoiler alert: Do not read on if you haven’t seen Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.”)
In Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” we get a glimpse into the lives of the Manson family, including what TV shows they liked to watch (“FBI”), and their tranquil days offering riding tours around Spahn Movie Ranch.
Wait: Did members of Charles Manson’s cult really take people on horseback trail tours?

Yes. Yes, they did.
Vincent Bugliosi, author of “Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson Murders” and prosecutor in the 1970 trial of Charles Manson, said the horses were “the main business” of the ranch. Western movies, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, wouldn't have been the same without the infamous ranch owned by George Spahn.
Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood attempts to take back stolen potential via the kind of fantasy fulfillment that's made only possible on celluloid. As with the Beatles' song "Helter Skelter," Sharon Tate, and the peace and love generation as a whole, the icons of hope in the 1960s were all tainted by mere association with Charles Manson. None of these needed to be linked to the murderous narcissist. Tate, magnificently captured Margot Robbie in the film, would have continued the rising trajectory of her film and modeling career; "Helter Skelter" would be remembered as the song that invented heavy metal, when it was just Paul McCartney trying to make as much noise on vinyl as possible; peace and Love would...

Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood was difficult to write about. That's what happens with dense movies. Naturally, then, my review left out something major. It was only after publishing it that I realized I hadn't even mentioned the extended scene that is the movie's most impressive on a filmmaking level. I'm talking about the significant detour when Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) visits Spahn's Movie Ranch. He used to shoot a TV show there a decade earlier but it's now Manson Family territory, thanks to the retired and now blind George Spahn (Bruce Dern)...

Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time . . . in Hollywood” is a mad, wild romp through a film geek’s mind—a hallucinatory homage to America’s dream factory. It’s also a funny/sad farewell to a time when people believed in the dreams the factory once delivered on a regular basis. Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) is an actor who once had a popular TV western series called “Bounty Law.” The series got canceled and he’s making a living playing villains in guest star roles in other TV series. His agent Marvin Schwarzs (Al Pacino) advises him to go to Italy to make spaghetti westerns lest he finally fade into bad guy oblivion. Dalton’s friend, stunt double, and confidence booster, Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), thinks it would be a great idea, especially since Dalton’s drinking is beginning to impact his career.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood almost featured James Marsden as a young Burt Reynolds.
Though Marsden’s casting in the film was announced last year, the final cut of Quentin Tarantino‘s highly-anticipated 9th film doesn’t feature the Westworld actor playing the screen legend. According to Collider, Marsden’s scenes as Reynolds were cut from the film, which features actors embodying several Hollywood icons, including Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate.

James Marsden was announced as a cast member in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” back in June 2018, but he’s nowhere to be found in the theatrical cut opening July 26 from Sony Pictures. Marsden is one of several actors who filmed scenes for “Hollywood” that got cut in the editing room; others include Tim Roth and Danny Strong. Collider has revealed that Marsden’s role in the movie was that of Hollywood icon Burt Reynolds. There are several scenes in the film where actors pop up as Hollywood legends, be it Mike Moh as Bruce Lee or Damian Lewis as Steve McQueen.
The casting of Marsden as Reynolds would’ve been an extremely meta one for “Hollywood” considering Reynolds himself was originally cast by Tarantino. Reynolds joined the project in the role of George Spahn, the ranch owner who rented out his property to Charles Manson and his followers.

On a hot August night in 1969, four murderous members of Charles Manson’s cult “family” invaded the Los Angeles home of pregnant actress Sharon Tate. Her husband, director Roman Polanski, was in Europe on business. What happened next made headlines and, for better or worse, history. You might not remember everything the way that Quentin Tarantino remembers it in Once Upon a Time in . . . Hollywood. But you won’t forget a second of what the writer-director puts onscreen. It’s Tarantino’s ninth film, and he claims it will be his next-to-last.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is set in Los Angeles during the summer of 1969, and it follows the lives of actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) as they make their way around an industry they hardly recognize anymore.
Charles Manson and his cult also play a role in the story and it seems like Pitt’s character is enticed and lured into the family. It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out,...

Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” has been added to the competition lineup of this month’s Cannes Film Festival, general delegate Thierry Frémaux announced Thursday.
“We were afraid the film would not be ready, as it wouldn’t be released until late July, but Quentin Tarantino, who has not left the editing room in four months, is a real, loyal and punctual child of Cannes!” Fremaux said in a statement.
“Like for ‘Inglourious Basterds,’ he’ll definitely be there — 25 years after the Palme d’or for ‘Pulp Fiction’ — with a finished film screened in 35mm and his cast in tow. His film is a love letter to the Hollywood of his childhood, a rock music tour of 1969, and an ode to cinema as a whole.”

Whenever Quentin Tarantino directs a film it usually generates Oscar buzz anticipation. For his upcoming “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” it has had unfortunate news among its slated cast. How will the deaths of both Luke Perry and Burt Reynolds affect the ultimate version seen by the audience?
SEECelebrity Deaths 2019: In Memoriam Gallery
Tarantino has chosen a story that rocked and terrified the Hollywood community: the murders of seven people, including actress Sharon Tate, by followers of Charles Manson. The film is led by an all-star cast with Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Al Pacino, Dakota Fanning, Kurt Russell and more. The death of Reynolds last September caused the director/writer to recast that role with Oscar nominee Bruce Dern (who then suffered an accident while jogging). Perry suddenly and shockingly died a few weeks ago at the age of 52 from a massive stroke and had already shot his scenes.

Here it is! The first trailer has been released for the ninth film of director Quentin Tarantino, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and it looks awesome! As you’ll see, it’s classic Tarantino.
The movie is set in La in the summer of 1969, it follows a time in the lives of an actor (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double (Brad Pitt), and then, of course, there’s the Manson Family who is part of the haunting backdrop of the story, along with their potential victim Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie).
This is a lively and upbeat trailer and one of my favorite aspects of it was actor Mike Moh, who seems to perfectly play Bruce Lee. We even get to see a little sparing between he and Pitt’s character. It’s a great little scene!
This movie has such an incredibly impressive cast, and I can’t wait to see it!

The trailer for Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” is finally here.
We’ve already seen Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie look stunning in vintage ’60s threads, and we even saw DiCaprio do the twist, but now we see the full picture of Hollywood in 1969.
Tarantino has teased that the film would include real life luminaries in the peripheries, but did anyone anticipate Brad Pitt fighting with Bruce Lee? Or a smirking, sinister Charles Manson?

Bruce Dern is back at work on Showtime’s new series Black Monday after fracturing a hip during a jog at the Silver Lake Reservoir in Los Angeles in October.
A tweet from Dern’s account went out today noting, “Can’t keep a good man down. Back at work on #Black Monday.”
The 82-year-old Dern, who recently finished filming on Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood in the role of rancher George Spahn, was hospitalized briefly in October following the jogging accident.
In addition to Tarantino’s Charles Manson-era Once Upon a Time, Dern co-stars in Focus Features’ The Mustang, set for a premiere at Sundance.

A tweet from Dern’s account went out today noting, “Can’t keep a good man down. Back at work on #Black Monday.”
