"Santa Baby" has been covered by Madonna, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Faith Evans,
LeAnn Rimes, Ashanti, Kylie Minogue, the Pussycat Dolls, Gwen Stefani, and even Michael Buble.
In the 1980's, Phil Springer bought out Joan Javit's co-ownership of
music rights to their 'Santa Baby' composition. At that time, the holiday
song's popularity had diminished, but the song experienced a resurgence
in future years.
It took Phil Springer just 10 minutes to craft the "Santa Baby" melody, and three weeks for
partner Joan Javits to perfect the lyrics.
In many cities it (Santa Baby) was a hit. But in some cities it was banned and there was a lot of talk against it.
I ask myself, 'How come?' I've written so many songs that, to me, musically are much better than 'Santa Baby,' and they're not popular. The answer has to be that 'Santa Baby' has a magic that goes beyond a composer's plans.
