Exclusive: Mexican-American author Sandra Cisneros’ coming-of-age novel The House on Mango Street is to be adapted into a TV drama by Gaumont, the producer behind Netflix hit Narcos.
The House on Mango Street is made up of series of vignettes about the characters that populate a blue-collar Chicago neighborhood, seen through the eyes of a Mexican-American teenager, who acts as narrator for the reader.
Regarded as a classic of Chicana literature, the 1984 book has been described as a telenovela of sorts by The New York Times and has made its way on to the curriculum in some U.S. schools and colleges.
Cisneros has previously declined offers to adapt the book for film and TV, according to Gaumont, but she changed her mind amid the explosion in streaming services and the ongoing dialogue about immigration in America.

French studio Gaumont (“Narcos”) is collaborating with Indian producer Dina Dattani (“The Ashram”) on a series adaptation of Preti Taneja’s debut novel “We That Are Young.”
A re-imagining of William Shakespeare’s “King Lear” set in contemporary India, the novel follows the tumultuous lives of the aging patriarch of a business empire, his three daughters and their vassals. The novel made it to several “book of the year” lists and won the $13,200 Desmond Elliott prize for new fiction in 2018.
“‘We That Are Young” is a work of epic scope and depth, providing a deep insight into today’s India, and the clash of tradition with modernization, as well as nuanced sexual politics,” said Gene Stein, president of television for Gaumont U.S. “We intend to shoot this series on location in India with the highest degree of authenticity while creating an elevated dramatic storyline with true global appeal.”

I blame Lost for most of the problems with Dig, USA‘s new investigation thriller, but frankly, I blame Lost for a lot of things.
The show is the latest entrant in the limited-run mystery genre, and revolves around Peter Connelly (Jason Isaacs), an FBI agent working in Israel, finding himself caught up in a bizarre conspiracy that spans the globe. Having caught sight of a redhead, who sticks out like a sore thumb among the crowds in Israel, Connelly follows her to the dig she’s been working on. It’s a massive archeological exploration of caves under the city. They stumble on an odd religious rite being performed by people who aren’t supposed to be there.
It isn’t as odd as it might seem to viewers, because we’ve already been introduced to some very “old school” Jews (no, really, really old school) who are fantastically...

Horror heavyweight Eli Roth is best known for spine-tingling flicks like Hostel and Cabin Fever, but he’s dabbled in the world of television before. Last year, Roth executive-produced all 13 episodes of Netflix’s Hemlock Grove, a show that, despite its mixed reception, has been renewed for a second season (due to drop this July). Now, with his long-anticipated The Green Inferno primed to hit theaters in September, Roth is jumping back into the small screen for South of Hell.
Roth will direct the pilot episode of the horror thriller, which is set to premiere on We tv sometime next year. It will premiere its first scripted series, legal drama The Divide, in July.
