Chicago – Is there a script doctor in the house? ABC is in dire need of one. How could the network possibly greenlight “Combat Hospital” in light of its recently botched, strikingly similar effort, “Off the Map”? Both shows fail to mine the potential drama in their inherently dramatic premises. Medical clinics in the South American jungle or an Afghanistan war zone should have no time or patience for melodramatic soap opera.
That being said, “Hospital” is a slight improvement over “Map,” despite its generic title and lack of colorful locales. Set in a Nato Role 3 Multinational Medical Unit at Kandahar Airfield (reportedly modeled after a real-life clinic), the show has genuine potential to explore an assortment of intriguing conflicts. The premiere episode, “Welcome to Kandahar,” only hints at the possible directions that the program could take in order to prevent itself from becoming a standard medical drama destined for cancellation.

ABC has announced the original programming it will be featuring during the summer of 2011. If you're a fan of reality TV, you're in luck, because the alphabet has new episodes of Wipeout, Bachelor Pad, and The Bachelorette coming down the pipeline, as well as a new show about karaoke, two Amazing Race-ish challenge shows, a new Extreme Makeover spinoff, and a game show built around people exiting a game show. Joining the mostly unscripted line-up, which can be found on Tuesdays and Thursdays, will be the second season of Rookie Blue and military hospital drama The Hot Zone.
There is no word yet on what reruns ABC will be airing or what canceled shows they'll be burning off, but until then, you can check out the press release below that gives detailed descriptions of each show as well as premiere dates/times.
What will you be watching this summer on ABC?...

ABC had been in negotiations for a 13-episode order to a medical drama set at a military hospital in Afghanistan to run in the summer. The deal for the Canadian/UK co-production has now closed with Daniel Petrie Jr. as executive producer/showrunner. The project, previously known as Combat Hospital, is of now untitled. It is being done with the same Canadian network partner, Canwest, and under the same low-cost financial model as ABC's cop drama Rookie Blue, which surprisingly became last summer's top-rated new broadcast scripted series and has been renewed for a second cycle. The new medical drama had already been greenlighted by Canwest with a 13-episode order. The series is being produced by Sienna Films and Artists Studios, along with Look Out Point. It was created by Douglas Steinberg (Psych) and Jinder Chalmers and is set to air in Canada on Global Television, the network that also carries Rookie Blue.

Exclusive: ABC is finalizing a deal for a 13-episode order to a medical drama about a military hospital in Afghanistan to run in the summer. The new medical drama had already been greenlighted by Canwest with a 13-episode order under the title Combat Hospital, but that name is expected to change now that ABC is picking up the show much like Copper became Rookie Blue after ABC got involved. Also upon closing the deal for the medical drama, Daniel Petrie Jr. will come on board as executive producer/showrunner. The series is a Canadian/UK co-production, with Sienna Films and Artists Studios producing alongside Look Out Point. It...
