My Father Die is an angry little debut for Sean Brosnan, and thankfully for papa Pierce Brosnan, not with biographical intent. It’s true that Brosnan keeps revenge in the family, but only by way of fictional bayou country folks. Pierce is safe from Sean’s bullet-ridden bite of familial revenge, unlike some characters who find themselves caught between not-so-friendly fire and the struggles of living up to (or denouncing) parental pedestals. It’s pulpy, fur-wearing, country fried fury, following a darker path that’s guided by stellar direction from the man with the golden camera. It’s not perfect, but stylish and provocative enough to erase any notion that “first-timer” is synonymous with “amateur.”

With Jurassic Park being rereleased in 3D this summer and another trip to the island of dinosaurs set for next summer, it really shouldn’t come as any surprise that b-moviemakers are already gearing up with movies like Jurassic Attack for the return of the cinematic dino craze.

Dead Man’s Shoes
Directed by Shane Meadows
Screenplay by Shane Meadows, Paddy Considine & Paul Fraser
UK, 2005
The revenge thriller, where a morally dubious protagonist avenges the wrongs of the past in bloody and retributive fashion, is as much an institution in cinema as romantic drama and hard boiled noir, whether in the form of big name blockbuster or straight to DVD exploitation gorn. From Charles Bronson and Death Wish to Arnie flicks and into the realm of Western, it is a plotline well trodden to the point of cliché. This is one of the reasons why 2005’s Dead Man’s Shoes provides such a welcome breath of fresh air, a unique take on the formula from a filmmaker with a very different focus.

The Girl From the Naked Eye (2012) Former martial arts competitor turned action star Jason Yee beats the shit out of a lot of people, shoots a few dozen more, and generally makes a menace of himself in director David Ren’s “The Girl from the Naked Eye”, a moderately budgeted action movie dressed up as a noir Detective story. The hero is one Jake, a driver for an escort service who falls (and vice versa) for his latest charge, the sweet Sandy (Samantha Streets). After Sandy is murdered, Jake makes it his mission to find her killer (or killers). This pits him against his buddy Simon (Ron Yuan, who also doubles as the film’s fight choreographer) and Simon’s slimy cop partner Frank (former Brit middleweight Gary Stretch, though disappointingly he never throws down). After a slow first 20 minutes, “The Girl from the Naked Eye” picks up noticeably, offering...

Title: The Girl From the Naked Eye Director: David Ren Starring: Jason Yee, Ron Yuan, Samantha Streets, Sasha Grey, Dominique Swain, Gary Stretch A pulpy, low-budget slice of film noir cross-pollinated with a martial arts flick, the curiously titled “The Girl From the Naked Eye” will certainly win no awards for great originality, but nonetheless serves as a stylish and engaging little vehicle for the surly charms of star Jason Yee, as well as its filmmaking team. The sophomore effort of director David Ren (“Shanghai Kiss”), the movie is a case of style over substance, to be sure, but boy is that style impressive on what must have been a shoestring budget. We warned you it was coming, now behold the cheesy goodness (?) that is the UK trailer for Mega Shark Vs Crocosaurus. Synopsis: In the Atlantic Ocean, the unsuspecting battleship USS Gibson is viciously attacked and destroyed the beast. The sole survivor is Lt.Terry McCormick (Jaleel White), a man experimenting with a sonic shark-repelling device. Meanwhile deep in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigel Putnam, an English hunter (Gary Stretch – Dead Man’s Shoes / Alexander) successfully captures a giant crocodile out to devour him whole. After loading the highly sedated crocodile on to a cargo ship, with its eggs intact, the ship is suddenly attacked by the vicious Mega Shark, waking the crocodile from its sleep and unleashing hell as the terrifying ancient beasts clash. Together McCormick and Putnam joined by Special Agent Hutchinson (Sarah Lieving) must pool their resources to save the world from the gigantic beasts and their killer offspring.

Director: Lek Kitaparaporn. Review: Adam Wing. “There must be something funny about your cock.” No irony. No fuss. We’re talking about a genuine cock here. One that is quite clearly ‘a little bit funny’. Fernando De Gama (Gary Stretch), a young Portuguese soldier of fortune, sets sail for the Orient seeking the man who killed his father. Shipwrecked, captured and sold into slavery, he’s rescued by a beautiful woman only to discover that she’s linked to his father's murder. When Fernando is pressed into military service, his heroics on the battlefield gain him the distinction of ‘celebrated personal guard’ to the King of Siam. It’s not long before he uncovers the Queen’s devious plan to replace the King with her lover, ensuring that he will do battle to prevent the very plot in which he’s incriminated. It’s all very exciting. As for the cock,...

Fernando too finds himself fighting for the king and after proving himself to be a strong warrior, enlisted in the king’s personal guard. Soon, it becomes apparent that the king’s life is in danger; unbeknownst to Fernando, it is the queen (Yossavadee Hassadeevitchitt) behind the assassination attempts,...

Based on the true story of a murderous queen, who, in 16th century Siam, plotted the murder of her husband so her lover could accede to the throne, the historical action epic The King Maker, which stars Gary Stretch, John Rhys-Davies and former Miss Thailand Cindy Burbridge, is released on DVD next week courtesy of Anchor Bay.

Back in early December of last year, I read a newspaper article in which the author bemoaned moviegoer's lack of interest in serious cinema.
Rather than flocking to The Hurt Locker or The Green Zone, people seem more interested in lowbrow popcorn crunchers than an "important film." Never mind that attendance is down across the board, and even expected hits like (*shudder*) Little Fockers didn't drawing in the expected crowds. And the author didn't anticipate the success and staying power of both True Grit and Black Swan.
Nope, this writer's overriding concern was that until our socioeconomic situation improves, serious films will continue being shunned by the public. With such a brilliant summation, that it's no surprise that the author is syndicated, while I just post on a blog.

After an apparent victory over the previous film’s giant octopus (oops, spoilers), Mega-Shark has gone and done it again – this time landing itself in battle with Crocosaurus.
Shamelessly plagiarising the hallowed heights of Alien vs. Predator with the tagline “whoever wins…we lose”, Asylum’s Mega-Shark vs. Crocosaurus stars Jaleel White (TV’s Family Matters) and Gary Stretch (Dead Man’s Shoes) alongside Star Trek: Voyager’s Emh, Robert Picardo – previously seen in Looney Tunes: Back in Action.
Should you find the sequel, on the cards since Mega-Shark vs. Giant Octopus’ trailer set the internet alight, a suspension of disbelief too far, just keep in mind the fanciful foes originally touted by the previous film’s star Deborah Gibson.
“I haven’t seen the final edit, but we did do a version that leaves the door open for a potential sequel, because God knows what else is in the ocean.
