As unlike as my mother and father were-she was always gay, he always stern and introspective-they had in common the most rigid sense of integrity. They taught all of us to respect the rights of all people; they taught us to respect the rights of the underdog; they taught us that all people come from God and are destined to go back to God, and they agreed that every race or creed has its shameful parts.
