The Machine is loud, gross, obnoxious and overbearing. It’s also disarming, quick-witted, fast moving and becomes increasingly funny as it ends up in, of all places, Russia for its payoff scenes.
Presided over, if that is the right term, by the irrepressible Bert Kreischer, the big-gutted comedian who goes by the name The Machine and prefers to appear without a shirt on whenever possible, has landed his first big feature film at age 50 and continues the same comic shtick he’s been doing for years. Lo and behold, it’s still pretty funny stuff. This is a big picture for a big guy, and Kreischer is so persistent, and persistently off the wall, that it’s finally far easier to enjoy the party than to carp and resist.
Kreischer makes a point of performing with his shirt off when at all possible, something that becomes a tad strange in...

Plot: Set 23 years after the original story which inspired it, The Machine finds Bert Kreischer facing familial crisis and the arrival of his estranged father when the ghost of his booze-soaked past arrives: a murderous mobster hellbent on kidnapping Bert back to the motherland to atone for his crimes. Together, he and his father must retrace the steps of his younger self in the midst of a war between a sociopathic crime family while they attempt to find common ground.
Review: This weekend boasts two theatrical films featuring stand-up comedians with dedicated fanbases in stories about their relationship with their father. Both Sebastian Maniscalco and Bert Kreischer have performed elements of the stories at the core of their big-screen adventures, but the results could not be further apart. While About My Father is a wholesome bromance centered on the culture clash of two families, The Machine is a balls-to-the-wall action...

Comedian and star Bert Kreischer’s The Machine will laugh its way into theaters on May 26, the beginning of the long Memorial Day weekend. Legendary Star Wars actor Mark Hamill co-stars opposite Kreischer.
Sony and Legendary announced the film’s release date on Wednesday. The two companies recently announced a multi-year distribution deal.
The film is an adaptation of a story Kreischer told onstage about getting involved with the Russian mob while studying abroad in college. The tale of Kreischer’s exploits quickly went viral and has been viewed more than 85 million times, according to Legendary.
Peter Atencio (Key & Peele, Keanu) is directing The Machine from a script by Kevin Biegel and Scotty Landes.

After watching his comrades be hunted and torn down by an alien hunter, the human prey is ready to fight back. To throw off the hunter’s heat vision, the human has stripped off his shirt and smeared mud over his muscled body. He stands in the center of a trap, ready to lure the hunter into one final showdown.
“Do it now!” he bellows, taunting the hunter. “Kill me!”
For most people, the above description recalls an iconic scene from Predator, the 1987 action horror classic directed by John McTiernan, but the human I’m describing is not Major Dutch Schaefer, the hulking special forces agent played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Rather it’s Royce, the decidedly lither mercenary played by Adrien Brody in the 2010 sequel Predators.
Some may argue that this callback captures everything wrong with the later movie. Half of the original’s fun involved watching meatheads like Arnold,...

"In two months - if you still feel the same, come find me in Saint Petersburg." Vertical Entertainment has released a trailer for an indie romance titled See You Soon, described as a modern day "Cinderella" story about a soccer star falling in love with a single mother from Russia - an homage to Leo McCarey’s An Affair To Remember. A U.S. soccer player suffers a career-threatening injury in an accident in the run-up to the World Cup, and during his recovery embarks on an epic romance. Liam McIntyre stars, with newcomer Russian actress Jenia Tanaeva as his love interest, plus a small cast including Harvey Keitel, Poppy Drayton, Oleg Taktarov, and Carla Abruzzo. This looks as cheesy and as cliche as you might expect, but the globe-spanning scope of it makes it worth a watch. And that bridge jump shot at the end is also worth it.

A few weeks ago, in anticipation of Guardians of the Galaxy's theatrical release, I wrote about the Curse of Tor Johnson, named after the old-school wrestler (and Ed Wood muse) who may have also been responsible for 50 years of terrible performances from professional wrestlers.
Since I wrote for WWE's Monday Night Raw for about six months, I wondered if the presence of Dave Bautista, a former champion, would jinx Guardians' box-office mojo. Three weeks into its theatrical run (and more than $175 million in receipts later), it's safe to say the Curse has been broken.

Are we alone in the universe? Pondering upon the vastness of the universe, we'd have to be incredibly self-centered to think we are the only life form in existence. And although we haven't seen proof of our intergalactic brethren, there have been plenty of films and TV shows about their clandestine (and more demonstrative) visits to Earth.
Now we have an entirely new horrific vision about one of those alien visits and the havoc they cause in Dark Skies. Keri Russell and Josh Hamilton star as the married couple whose life becomes derailed by mysterious happenings caused by a disturbing malevolent force…and it isn't a domestic disturbance by any means. This one is imported. Way imported.

There have been a lot of cool stories to come out of Hollywood in the last couple of years, but for our money one of the coolest is the sudden and unexpected career resurgence of Dolph Lundgren, who came out of nowhere (aka Europe) to reclaim his action star title with his turn as the despicable Gunnar Jensen in 2010's "The Expendables."
Now, Lundgren is kicking it into even higher gear with "Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning," which reunites him with his "Expendables 2" co-star Jean-Claude Van Damme for the sixth (!) installment of their long-running sci-fi series.
All of which got us wondering: What is it about Dolph Lundgren that makes him so cool?
Well, after doing a little research, we discovered the answer: Pretty much everything. With that in mind, we thought we'd present the top 10 Things You Didn't Know About Dolph Lundgren and help reveal the mysteries of the...

Given the law of averages, it’s fairly common that as film fans we’re far more likely to run into a stinker than we are a new classic, or worse still a underwhelming slice of anti-climax that promised so much more. Quite often that leaves us deciphering a mess and hanging on to small morsels of consolation from an ultimately wasted couple of hours.
The end result of this is that you, on occasion, may stumble across a disproportionately good turn from the only actor in the movie who seemed to be taking their work seriously. You could make a legitimate claim that this is far more worthy than excellent acting in Oscar bait, but such feats are so often ignored and dismissed along with its mediocre surround.
Here is a run down of ten such performances, a rare moment...

Adrien Brody is perhaps the most unlikely successor to Arnold Schwarzenegger one is liable to imagine. Brody is best known for offbeat and intelligent indie fare, such as Wes Anderson’s The Darjeeling Limited or Roman Polanski’s The Pianist, so it is somewhat of a surprise to see his name on the cast list in this latest installment in the Predator series. Less surprising, though no less welcome is Robert Rodriguez’s role as producer. Rodriguez’s name is something of an indicator of quality; generally, he makes good, fun films, ideal for Saturday night viewing and Predators is no exception.

Chicago – Perhaps it’s because it is so clearly inspired by a retro style of action but Nimrod Antal’s “Predators,” now available on Blu-ray and DVD, plays better at home than it did at the disappointing theatrical screening in the middle of summer 2010. It’s still a bit of a disappointment, but it’s one of those films that’s nowhere near as bad as it could have been and features a few strong set pieces, especially in HD.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
The opening act of “Predators” is its most accomplished. Antal literally throws us into the action as Royce (Adrien Brody) plummets toward the ground. At the last minute, a parachute opens and slightly softens his landing. Royce is getting his bearings when another body lands to his right and then his left. It’s a human air drop into what resembles the Amazon Rain Forest.

A once proud franchise had basically fallen apart. Now it returns again with something more akin to the original. It may not exactly be better than it, but it at least scores points for not being as terrible as the other sequels. Royce (Adrien Brody) wakes up to find himself falling through the air and not knowing how he got in the situation. He.s about to splat when his chute opens and he finds himself in a lush jungle. He finds he.s not alone as drug enforcer Cuchillo (Danny Trejo) is in the jungle and just as confused as he is. They.re nearly killed by Russian solider Nikolai (Oleg Taktarov) but also find soldier Mombasa (Mahershalalhashbaz Ali),...

The number of home video releases on October 19th is not as abundant as in recent weeks, and fewer re-released titles means those that are available are much more special. In this batch one Adrien Brody flick competes with another, and at least two independent horror titles are making a splash. Two beloved classic films return in Blu-ray where one is supplemented by a documentary treatment of it.
Also, don't forget to strum & drum out with some tunes from Rob Zombie on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Finally, foreign horror gives us an over-the-top Japanese gorefest, a British zombie flick where the $70 budget was spent on tea and biscuits for the zombies, and Norwegian black metal.

It's not often that you'll find films as extremely opposite as the two main theatrical releases heading to home video this week. First up is the testosterone-pumping sci-fi action adventure reboot 'Predators,' starring Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Walton Goggins, Oleg Taktarov, Laurence Fishburne, Danny Trejo, Louis Ozawa Changchien and Mahershalalhashbaz Ali as mercenaries and murderers transported to an alien planet where they're hunted down as prey. It's action -- action -- action. At the other end of the spectrum is 'Please Give,' a gentle comedy of human proportions about life on this planet, starring Catherine Keener, Oliver Platt, Rebecca Hall and Amanda Peet.

The DVD and Blu-ray release of Robert Rodriguez's much-anticipated reboot, Predators (Read: Movie Review: Predators), doesn't come until October 19, but details on the discs and what features they will offer have been released by 20th Century Fox to allow you some insight into which you'll want to pick up when the time comes.
The movie takes place on a Predator inhabited planet, where a group of Earth's most-deadly and dangerous killers -- soldiers, murderers, crime lords, special forces -- have all been brought there as worthy prey for the ultimate hunter species. It returns us to the fun we had watching in the 1987 original Arnold Schwarzenegger film, which had since been lost in Alien vs. Predators and AvP: Requiem.
The Nimród Antal directed movie stars Adrien Brody, Danny Trejo, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Oleg Taktarov, Walt Goggins, Louis Ozawa Changchien, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, and Laurence Fishburn.

Film: ‘Predators’; Director: Nimrod Antal; Cast: Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Walton Goggins, Oleg Taktarov; Rating:**1/2
When the first ‘Predator’ came in 1987, there was no money to be made on selling computer games based on films. Movies were purely made for the pleasure of cinema or to make money purely from the film rather than the various spin-offs it could generate. Twenty-three years down the line, ‘Predators’ forgets this and ends up becoming nothing but a platform to launch as many possible sequels and computer games.
Comparison with the original is but.

Los Angeles, Aug 5 – Brazilian actress Alice Braga was teased by her ‘Predators’ co-stars when she landed on the sets wearing a dress on the first day of shooting.
‘The first day I came to set wearing a dress and (co-star) Oleg Taktarov looked at me and said, ‘You can’t wear a dress (for this film)’. I said, ‘What do you mean? I’m a girl. You better be careful what you say because I’m carrying a gun!” said Braga.
She added that being surrounded by men all the time on the sets made her.

Rumor has it that three follow up films, a sequel and two crossovers with the “Alien” franchise, to John McTiernan’s 1987 sci-fi thriller, “Predator,” exist somewhere out there in the ether. I’m convinced this is nothing more than a legend, an old wives’ tale. I don’t believe it. There is only one sequel to that testosterone-filled, suspense-riddled Arnold Schwarzenegger classic and it is Nimrod Antal’s “Predators.”
Royce (Adrien Brody), an ex-us special forces soldier-turned mercenary regains consciousness while hurtling toward a thick blanket of trees below. He has no idea where he is or why. Moments after his parachute springs open he crashes into a dense tropical forest. Gathering himself he discovers a half dozen others that have arrived just as he has. They manage to pull their parachute cords, land somewhat safely in the forested terrain, and immediately ask the most pertinent questions - where are they, who in the hell knocked them out and dropped them out of an aircraft, and how do they get back home? They realize one obvious thing most of them have in common - they are all experienced killers of varied sorts - and then find that something else is lurking in the forest and is trying to kill them for the mere sport of it.

Some spoilers for Predators below.
If you saw Predators this weekend, you witnessed the adventures of one of my new favorite action movie characters: Nikolai, a Russian Spetsnaz soldier played by former Ufc competitor Oleg Taktarov.
There are a number of reasons why I think Nikolai is basically the greatest thing since Arnold Schwarzenegger told Bill Duke that right now, he's very hungry:
- He's played by an actual Russian. So depressingly often supporting characters who are supposed to be Russian are played by American actors who have to phonetically torture the language. Not so here. Taktarov is an honest-to-goodness Russki, and his muttered asides and exclamations in the mother tongue sound authentic. Bonus: his big last line in the film is not only in Russian, it's untranslated! (It's also difficult to translate, but it's basically a very literal version of "in your face").

Chicago – Good films deliver on their promise. Great films up the ante even more. In this version of the long “Predators” franchise from director Nimrod Antal (“Control,” “Armored,” “Vacancy”) and more-known producer Robert Rodriguez (“Grindhouse,” “Sin City”), we merely see more of the same: just enough to get us by but not nearly enough to make us care.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
The curiously cast film stars the I’m-trying-to-be-badass Brody as he attempts to fill the more authentic shoes of Arnold Schwarzenegger from 1987’s “Predator”.
The battle-hardened and mercenary-turned Brody is self-elected as the team leader of the humans as they wage war against alien predators out of necessity. While the humans are fighting for their lives, the predators are simply butchering for sport. The aliens merely want to improve their abilities as the harbringers of death and they use humans as their guinea pigs.

Topher Grace, Predators Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson’s Eclipse to Cross $250m Milestone: Box Office Nimród Antal‘s adventure/thriller Predators, starring Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Oleg Taktarov, and Laurence Fishburne was a good surprise for distributor Twentieth Century Fox on Friday, but turned out to be a disappointment of sorts by Sunday. Predators performed better than expected on Friday, grossing an estimated $10.45m. Could the 2010 reboot of the 1987 John McTiernan-Arnold Schwarzenegger effort gross $30m over the three-day weekend? Would Predators make Academy Award winner Adrien Brody bankableish? Well, if studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo are accurate, the answers are a) no b) who knows? Predators took in an estimated $25.3m, after dropping an alarming 18.9% on Saturday and another 24.8% on Sunday. A Saturday drop usually isn’t very good news for a movie’s longevity or overall popularity. Much to the contrary. For comparison...

Predators Directed by: Nimrod Antal Written by: Alex Litvak and Michael Finch Starring: Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Walton Goggins, Oleg Taktarov, Laurence Fishburne, Danny Trejo, Louis Ozawa Changchien, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali Predators is a movie that hates surprises. It teases the viewer with mysteries and potential twists only to explain them away minutes later, ensuring that both the characters onscreen and the audience know exactly what's coming next. Consider the opening scenes, perhaps the most original element of the film. The first shot is of an unconscious Adrien Brody in freefall. He comes to, panics, and then his automated parachute opens just before he crashes into the trees. One by one he encounters the other humans, fresh from their own drop from the sky. When they find a broken corpse smashed on the jungle floor, he helpfully surmises, "Looks like his parachute didn't open." You think? Much of Predators...

The Predators don’t need no stinkin’ aliens! In fact, the Alien vs. Predator cross-overs have been dragging our predatory protagonists down. The Predators are a lot more fun on their own. Happily, the latest installment in the Predator series makes no mention of their frequent acid-blooded opponents. This new entry, directed by Nimrod Antal (Kontroll, Vacancy, Armored) and produced by Robert Rodriquez (From Dust Till Dawn, Sin City, Grindhouse) is a direct sequel to the 1987 original, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers and Jesse Ventura. And it’s probably the best installment in the franchise since then.
The film, written by Alex Litvak and Michael Finch from a plot by Rodriquez, flips the premise of the first movie. Instead of them coming here to hunt us, they bring us to them so they can stalk us on their home turf. The Predators are back in the jungle, as we first saw them 23-years-ago.

Nimród Antal and Robert Rodriguez have resurrected a dying bread. For almost 23 years now the Predators have slowly been fading away from an onslaught of mediocrity to down right awfulness– yes, I’m looking at you AvP’s. A once great monster got turned into a goofy one. Now it’s back and in full swing.
Predators may not be as wonderful as the original testosterone-filled spectacle, but it’s not too far behind in terms of delivering on the B-movie goods. It’s extremely self-aware and does nearly everything you’d expect and want from a picture like this: well done action, a compelling ensemble, and plenty of standout cheesy (in a good way) one-liners.
In the promising opening we’re immediately brought to Royce (Adrien Brody) who’s in a free fall and has no clue why or where he is. The same goes for the others that...

New 'Predators' movie delivered lots of action, thrills & suspense. 20th Century Fox released their new action/thriller flick "Predators" into theaters this weekend. I just got through watching it,and I must say that it was quite entertaining. The top critics gave it pretty average rating reviews, but I thought it was a little above average. It stars: Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Walton Goggins, Laurence Fishburne, Danny Trejo, Oleg Taktarov, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, and Louiz Ozawa. "Predators" revolved around character Royce (Adrian Brody) who gets dropped on an alien planet, and eventually meets up with a couple of other strangers who had been dropped there like him. After a bit of a slow start with the hellos and trying to figure out where the hell they are, the movie quickly picks up when predator pit bulls start hunting them. Director: Nimrod Antal.
Writer: Alex Litvak, Michael Finch, Jim Thomas, and John Thomas.
Producer: Robert Rodriguez.
The latest film in the Predator franchise is centrally from the minds of Nimrod Antal (Vacancy) and Robert Rodriguez (Grindhouse). Other writers have participated and this latest film is being distributed by 20th Century Fox, while being partially produced by Rodriguez's Troublemaker Studios. This alien hunter franchise spans twenty plus years and Predators goes from man vs man, or alien, in the original, to squad vs squad on the Predator's home, or at least an alien-made turf. The film adds many more plotlines than the original, with an ensemble cast outmatching a much larger Predator in this newest film compared to the first.
The story begins with character Royce free-falling from the sky, or as movie critic Roger Ebert says via "deus ex machina (falling from the heavens)." Thankfully,...

As it turns out, Kirk Lazarus' first immutable law of film doesn't only apply to those grabbing for Oscar glory; "never go full retard" is equally applicable to action films. The Robert Rodriguez-produced, Nimród Antal-directed reborquel to Predator should've heeded the advice of Lazurus. For the first three quarters of the film, it's a perfectly serviceable, half-retarded action film, with an Iq humming at around 80, which is right where you need to be for a decent summer blockbuster. Unfortunately, a couple of dumbasses -- let's call them Alex Litvak and Michael Finch -- got it into their tiny, tiny brains that what Predators was missing was a twist that would make poor M. Night blush with embarrassment, a twist -- combined with the Schwarzeneggering of Adrien Brody -- that pushed Predators around the retard bin and into full-on territory.

Predators
Directed by: Nimród Antal
Cast: Adrien Brody, Alice Braga, Topher Grace, Laurence Fishburne
Running Time: 1 hr 47 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: July 9, 2010
Plot: Soldiers, including Royce (Brody), fall from the sky and land in a jungle. They soon learn they’re being hunted by an alien race.
Who’S It For? Fans of the original 1987 Predator film, and fans of the sci-fi, action genre will be very pleased. Ladies, realize that’s what you are getting if your boyfriend tries to drag you to a movie starring Adrien Brody and Topher Grace.
Expectations: I avoided all previews and trailers, including a sneak-peak that was all the rage at SXSW. I thought it was hilarious that some geeks were upset about Brody and Grace getting cast, without seeing one second of footage.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Adrien Brody as Royce: Those who thought Brody couldn’t be tough enough … get over it.

Predators featured an exemplary who’s who of walking clichés under Dutch’s command which lent itself to the film’s charm and magnetism. Likewise, Predators features a similar though less memorable collection of fleshy fodder for the intergalactic hunters to track down and pick off. There’s Robert Rodriquez favorite Danny Trejo playing a mirror image of himself; Adrien Brody as surly tough guy loner who channels Christian Bale’s Batman voice and his beefed up body; Walter Goggins as a motor mouth serial killer coward; Lawrence Fishburne as the guy with a trippy sanity; Oleg Taktarov as the mild-mannered big gun; Louis Changchien as the silent assassin; Alice Braga as the Latino macho warrior; Mahershalalhashbaz Ali as the clueless guy most likely to die quickly; and Topher Grace as the sniveling dweeb with questionable loyalties…read more [TheHDRoom]

Adrien Brody and Alice Braga in Predators
Photo: 20th Century Fox The Predator franchise began in 1987 as a standalone feature starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as one of several commandos dropped into the jungle of Central America for a bit of anti-guerilla warfare. Along the way they encounter an extra-terrestrial proficient in killing, skinning and spinal cord removal. The film was an excellent bit of horror meets thriller meets sci-fi and it has since spawned a shoddy 1990 Los Angeles-based sequel starring Danny Glover and a spin-off of sorts combining the Alien and Predator franchises in the lackluster Alien vs. Predator in 2004 and its even worse sequel in 2007 . In my eyes all three were failures and seem to suggest this is a franchise best left in the '80s.
Nevertheless, under the tutelage of producer Robert Rodriguez (Sin City), Fox is still attempting to prove this is in fact a viable franchise and...
