The imaginative and groundbreaking prison drama "Oz" is getting a short sequel from its original creator, according to series star Kirk Acevedo. The actor who played inmate Miguel Alvarez for six seasons of the HBO series took to X/Twitter this week to spread the word about "Zo," a YouTube short film from series writer-creator Tom Fontana. According to Acevedo, the short is set to star Dean Winters, who played ultra-violent prisoner Ryan O'Reily in the show's original run, and Lee Tergesen, who played Tobias Beecher, an attorney-turned-inmate who was forced to adapt to harsh prison conditions. Christoph Shrewe, whose credits include "Mr. Robot," "Criminal Minds," and "Fear the Walking Dead," will direct the upcoming short.
Acevedo notes that "Zo" will be about "Oz after prison," and an accompanying promo image includes the phrase "What happens once you're free?" What's more, the actor noted that if the film gets "good buzz,...

Before The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Six Feet Under, The Wire, or any of the other popular HBO shows, there was Oz. The one-hour drama chronicled the lives of the staff and inmates at the Oswald State Correctional Facility, a maximum security penitentiary home to the most violent offenders in the state. It’s been over twenty years since the series concluded, but creator Tom Fontana is back with an Oz short film starring Lee Tergesen as Tobias Beecher and Dean Winters as Ryan O’Reily.
Titled Zo, the short film actually premiered at the Atx Festival in 2021, but few people were able to see it. Thankfully, Zo will premiere on YouTube on May 1st, giving fans around the world the chance to finally see it. According to Kirk Acevado, who starred in Oz as Miguel Alvarez, it could even lead to a sequel series if the short film gets enough buzz.

Both on the awards circuit and in the public consciousness, HBO is widely regarded as among the first Hollywood heavyweights to recognize that television, as a medium, had the power to deliver sprawling, large scale stories on a smaller screen. From HBO’s ascent in the late 1990s through its dragon-aided roar across the 2010s, the network’s original series tackled universal stories, stretching across continents and decades.
The network hasn’t been without controversy, though. HBO faced questions about its lack of diversity in flagship series, including “Game of Thrones” and “Girls,” throughout the 2010s. And, unshackled from the restrictions of broadcast TV, the various steps the network took to push the limit of what’s allowed on screen garnered a fair share of pearl-clutching headlines; see “The Sopranos” in the ’90s and “Euphoria” just a few years back. And since the Warner Bros. and Discovery merger, there’s...

If you were a kid in the early 1990s, you were probably a fan of Mike Myers and Dana Carvey in the "Saturday Night Live" sketch "Wayne's World." Myers played Wayne Campbell, a metal fan who shot a cable access show in his mom's basement with his buddy Garth Algar (Dana Carvey). The bit spawned a whole lot of catchphrases like the self-explanatory "schwing" when they saw a pic of a beautiful woman. Not every "SNL" sketch can support an entire movie, but "Wayne's World" not only managed one but two. In fact, it was the second "SNL" sketch to become a film after "Blues Brothers" and the first to get a sequel.
"Wayne's World," directed by Penelope Spheeris, infamously gave rise to a lot of rumors about Myers being difficult to work with during filming. In an episode of The Hollywood Reporter's "It Happened in Hollywood" podcast, Spheeris spoke about the experience,...

After almost passing up No One Lives and mistaking it for something generic, Ryūhei Kitamura set out to make a fun and exciting horror movie. And he more than succeeded without sacrificing the fear and personality found in the original script. With Robert Hall’s bloody practical effects sweetening the pot, this movie ends up being a delightfully gory action-slasher.
The initial setup of No One Lives is both familiar and misleading. The cold open shows an imperiled young woman (Adelaide Clemens) running through the woods. It is only when she is caught by her unseen pursuer does the audience learn her name: Emma. Using a broken piece of glass, she desperately scratches her name, while upside down, in a nearby tree before presumably dying off screen. Several months later, the story shifts to Luke Evans and Laura Ramsey’s characters, who pause their road trip and stop at a motel out in the sticks.

“I’m starting to feel like this is my funeral,” Oz creator Tom Fontana joked, while sitting down for an Atx retrospective on Monday, celebrating his series’ enduring impact.
During the lively, foul-mouthed conversation, moderator Eric Deggans of NPR noted that the prison drama was the first one-hour drama series ever to air on HBO, paving the way toward a Golden Age in small-screen storytelling.
In Fontana’s opinion, Oz was groundbreaking in just one way. “HBO trusted me, as the writer and producer, to make the show I wanted, as opposed to the show they thought they wanted. I thought that gave permission to do [shows like] Sopranos and Six Feet Under,” he said. “I think…we took a chance, and it has allowed other people to make TV shows that take a chance.”

USA Network appears to be exiting the scripted market.
The latest casualties at the cable network are Treadstone and The Purge.
They are both spinoffs of wildly popular movie franchises, but neither set the ratings alight upon their launches.
Treadstone is ending after just one season.
The series explored the origin story and present-day actions of a fictional CIA black-ops program known as Operation Treadstone — a covert program that uses a behavior-modification protocol to turn recruits into nearly-superhuman assassins.
The series follows sleeper agents across the globe as they’re mysteriously 'awakened' to resume their deadly missions.
The program breaks down these assassins' personalities, erases their memories, and eliminates their moral code so they can effectively kill targets around the world. Treadstone's legacy was present and begins in an East Berlin incident that transpires in 1973.
This involves John Randolph Bentley (Jeremy Irvine), one of the program's agents, who escapes his Soviet captors.

After years of making a name for himself in New York theater, Mark Ruffalo was on the cusp of breaking in to high-profile movie roles when television came calling.
In 1999, Tom Fontana and Barry Levinson had been handed a 13-episode order from Upn for a cop drama “The Beat.” Fontana and casting director Alexa Fogel had been impressed by Ruffalo’s work on stage and recruited him to co-star in the series as the hotheaded ladies-man New York City beat cop Zane Marinelli.
Fontana and Levinson’s track record with NBC’s indelible “Homicide: Life on the Street” and HBO’s arresting “Oz” lent credibility to “The Beat.” The show promised to be envelope-pushing, if only because nobody was watching Upn anyway. The pilot was directed by Levinson. Ruffalo had more than a few shirtless scenes in the early episodes.
“Tom had seen me in plays and was a fan.

Though “The Plot Against America” took its time to get going, it’s full steam ahead for David Simon’s Philip Roth adaptation by Episode 4 — but to what end? With just two episodes to go, the drama has certainly flared up: The Levin familial bonds are being pushed to the brink as Sandy falls increasingly under Lindbergh’s spell, with the help of Aunt Evelyn and her new boyfriend Rabbi Bengelsdorf. The lines have been drawn, and it’s not looking good for either side. While this was by far the most exciting episode so far, it still feels as though Simon is obligingly following Roth’s outline rather than forging his own path.
In both the novel and the series “The Plot Against America,” there’s an unmentioned but implicit rhetorical question reaching out from beyond the page and screen. To borrow from the musical “Cabaret,” one of the...

In adapting Chelsea Cain’s novel “One Kick” into an episodic drama, Matt Lopez had a tall order on his hands.
The protagonist of the book, Kit “Kick” Lannigan is a survivor of a childhood abduction and child pornography ring, who, despite never fully healing from her formative years’ trauma, works with the FBI as an adult to help solve present-day missing persons cases. The 12-episode series Lopez titled “Gone” was co-produced by an American entity (NBCUniversal) and an international one (France’s TF1), which meant adhering to different decency standards when it came to how much violence against children could be shown on-screen. But Lopez also wanted to build the story out to focus more on Kick’s present-day cases, with the larger mystery of the network behind Kick’s abduction to be a season-long arc. The balancing act for the show became not only about when to unravel more of the longer arc,...

While some cable networks strike gold with hit TV series, usually cable shows just don't draw the same sort of audience the big broadcast networks do. Although USA Network originally ordered the new TV show, The Purge, the thriller is also going to be rerun at times on its sister-station Syfy. Will running it on two NBC-Universal owned networks help it draw a larger audience, or at least minimize the cost to one network, or will viewers just be confused? Will The Purge be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. *Status update below.

Bruised egos lead to murder in a world where all crime is legal for a day, and The Purge gets uncomfortably close to real life.

The Purge Episode 8
Having been writing about television for a decade at this point, I've seen a lot of “previously on” and “next week on” montages designed to fire up viewers about upcoming events, or remind viewers of pertinent past information. The opening reminder segment in “I Will Participate” has to be one of the best ones I've ever seen. Throughout this season, we've seen Joe riding around in a big Purge van, being a hero and saving lives, until last week he broke into the sealed home of the Betancourts and kidnapped Rick and Jenna. It was an abrupt change in the character, the kind of hard left turn that can throw a character's previous actions into question,...

The Purge Episode 6
From the opening of "The Forgotten," it's established pretty strongly that one of the forgotten figures in the episode is Joe. When he's not hiding behind a faceless metal mask, he's living a faceless existence. His father is dying. He works in a factory, a dying industry in America's dying manufacturing sector. He's divorced, eating bologna sandwiches out of a lunch box. He's well-liked among his coworkers, but his most recent date stood him up. In short, Joe is anonymous, as blank and plain as the steel mask he manufactured himself.
Except on Purge Night. During the Purge, Joe is a hero, saving those who can't save themselves. He travels around in an anonymous van, wearing his anonymous mask, but playing the role of the masked savior,...

Things are ramping up in the third episode of “The Purge.” People are murdering each other for promotions, the frightening pro-Purge cult is dropping people off to their deaths, and we’re getting a taste of the backlash and insurgency that is resisting the government and its yearly night of murder.
Episode 3 of the USA Network series, “The Urge to Purge,” also teases something new, though. The final moments of the episode bring fans an installment in the story of a man wearing a metal mask who heads out on Purge night in an unmarked van. The man, named Joe (Lee Tergesen), looks scary, but the episode upends expectations – instead of going on a joyful murder spree, the man in the mask rescues a woman from her attackers.

“The Purge” is coming to takeover your TV screens, but first some the actors and producers of the series stopped by San Diego Comic Con to talk everything Purge and much more. The series will be premiering on the USA Network on September 4th for a ten-episode run.
This will be the first time that the franchise, made famous in the movie theaters, will be making its debut on network television which will give the viewers a chance to get into the depths of the characters and the story arc of and consequences of “The Purge”!
The premise of the series revolves around a 12-hour time period when all crime, including vandalism, murder, arson and theft, is legal. This is set in an altered United States ruled by a totalitarian political party. The series follows several seemingly unrelated characters living in a small city.

For those fond of some (fictional) purging, 2018 heralds a tantalizing double bill from Blumhouse and Universal.
On the one hand, we have The First Purge, a movie prequel set to deep dive into the New Founding Fathers of America and explain how (and why) they authorized that 12-hour window of ungodly mayhem in the first place. And then comes The Purge, a spinoff TV series that chronicles the story of four people who experienced Purge Night and lived to tell the tale.
It spans 10 episodes in total, and as you’ll see from today’s thrilling teaser trailer, director Anthony Hemingway calls upon flashbacks to journey beyond the madness and explore the goings-on of a future America that allows for 12 hours of annual anarchy – not only that, but it encourages it.
Among the cast for this one are Gabriel Chavarria, Jessica Garza, Hannah Emily Anderson, Lili Simmons, Amanda Warren, Colin Woodell,...

The Purge is hitting USA this fall.
USA Network has announced that its adaptation of the harrowing film franchise will premiere Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 10/9c. Both the premiere and the 10-episode season’s finale will be simulcast on sister network Syfy.
Watch a teaser trailer above.
Based on the movies from Blumhouse Productions and penned by film franchise creator James DeMonaco, TV’s The Purge revolves around a 12-hour period when all crime, including murder, is legal. Set in an altered America ruled by a totalitarian political party (don’t say it!), the series follows several seemingly unrelated characters living in a small city.

The Yellow Birds director Alexandre Moors on Kevin Powers' novel adapted by David Lowery and Ronnie Porto: "The book is beautiful. A beautiful piece of English literature." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
The Yellow Birds, shot by Sundance award-winner Daniel Landin (Jonathan Glazer's Under the Skin) and edited by Joe Klotz with a a terrific score by Adam Wiltzie, Adam Peters and Marc Ribot, stars Alden Ehrenreich and Tye Sheridan with Jack Huston, Jennifer Aniston (also an executive producer), Toni Collette, Jason Patric, Lee Tergesen, and Olivia Crocicchia.
Alexandre Moors joined me for a conversation on his second feature (after Blue Caprice with Isaiah Washington and Tequan Richmond). The first time I heard about Kevin Powers' novel The Yellow Birds was from the director of Augustine, Alice Winocour when she was in New York for her film Disorder (Maryland) during Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in 2016. Matthias Schoenaerts played Vincent, a soldier returning from.

In our current decade, there aren’t too many new horror franchises that have impressed me, but one that I feel is worth mentioning is that of The Purge. If you’re unfamiliar, it’s set in the not too distant future where all crime is legal for one night each year. Basically, the elected officials see this as a way of keeping the crime rate down – and we’re given the impression that it’s actually working.
What allows for this concept to resonate is that it not only produces much in the way of tension, but it also feels very “real,” forcing us to consider if society could ever go to this extreme. Furthermore, it also serves as a social commentary of sorts, with the sequels more so feeling like the proper realization of this idea.
Quite surprisingly, the franchise will be spilling over to TV, which I...
