When he woke up to the Emmy nominations on July 12, Mike Yurchuk wasn’t necessarily shocked to see the musical comedy game show he executive produces along with Jimmy Fallon and Jim Juvonen, “That’s My Jam,” nominated for Best Game Show. As he points out, “There were 25 eligible contenders in the category, so we had a 20 percent chance.” It was when he saw his four fellow nominees that the enormity of what his show had accomplished in its second season became clear. “We’re in the same category with ‘The Price is Right,’ ‘Jeopardy!’, ‘Wheel of Fortune’ and ‘Family Feud,” he marvels. “It’s like all of these legacy shows. It’s the best game shows of all times – and us. I feel like we’re the Bad News Bears of our category. We’re up against shows that all originated between 1956 and ’76. We came on in 2021. So we’re...

Keith Richards and the rest of The Rolling Stones were an early inspiration to Bruce Springsteen. The American artist taught himself to play Richards’ guitar riffs and dreamed about performing onstage with the band. When Springsteen rose to fame, he crossed paths with The Rolling Stones multiple times. Richards, who he’d admired so greatly, liked him as a person. He wasn’t as big a fan of Springsteen’s music, though.
Keith Richards liked Bruce Springsteen but had problems with his music
Richards and Springsteen had crossed paths several times by the late 1980s, and the former enjoyed each of their interactions.
“I’ve met Bruce two or three times,” Richards told Rolling Stone in 1988. “We’ve had several good chats, usually at some release party or premiere, and we just end up in the corner talking. He’s a sweet guy, a nice guy.”

Paul McCartney Wanted The Beatles’ ‘Got to Get You Into My Life’ to Sound Like American R&b and Soul
Paul McCartney wanted The Beatles‘ “Got to Get You Into My Life” to sound like an American R&b and soul song. The song is Paul’s ode to pot.

In 1964, Bob Dylan introduced The Beatles to marijuana, and they fell in love with it. After that, it was always around. Paul loved marijuana so much that he made “Got to Get You Into My Life” an ode to pot.
In The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, Paul wrote that he thought it would be a good idea to write a song with “Got to get you into my life,’ and only he would know he was talking about pot.
Years later, Paul told people what the song was about.

Jackie Shane, a soul singer and transgender pioneer who had been all but forgotten for decades until her reissued catalogue sparked renewed attention in 2017, has died at the age of 78. Douglas McGowan, the Numero Group A&R scout who had tracked down Shane and was responsible for her rediscovery, confirmed the news to Rolling Stone. Shane died at home in Nashville, where she lived with her cat, Sweetie.
“I’m devastated to report that our friend and hero Jackie Shane passed away peacefully in her sleep earlier this week,” McGowan said.

Buddy Miller & Jim Lauderdale Thursday, February 21, 2013 The Bowery Ballroom, NYC
Some music needs to be heard in concert to be fully appreciated. No amount of spin doctoring by journalists or peer pressure from fanatical fans can justify an act unless one catches said act live. Best to let the music do the talking in a live music venue and judge said act accordingly. And so it was, again, last night at Bowery Ballroom where Jim Lauderdale and Buddy Miller performed a well-crafted, expertly executed set of Americana music that was exhilarating, entertaining, and well, just plan fun.
I first met the Grammy-award winning singer-songwriter Jim Lauderdale back in the early '90s, around the release of his second solo CD, Pretty Close to the Truth. And I discovered Buddy because he played guitar on Jim's records. I was struck by how effortlessly Jim spun gold with his brand of authentic,...

Jefferson Airplane: After Bathing at Baxter's (RCA)
This was the Airplane's second LP of 1967, and on it they took the studio freedom their two huge hit singles had earned them and went wild and unsupervised, making a real psychedelic album rather than the carefully contrived simulation of psychedelia that had been Surrealistic Pillow. The result had more avant-garde weirdness than hit singles (RCA had unrealistic hopes for "Watch Her Ride"), but the album actually coheres far better; for all the stylistic disjunctions and studio effects and Jorma Kaukonen's often-abrasive guitar sounds, and for that matter the nine-minute instrumental trio improvisation "Spare Chaynge," it flows organically, creating its own logic.
Cream: Disraeli Gears (I'm not even a Cream fan and I still have to acknowledge the brilliance of "Strange Brew," "Sunshine of Your Love," "Tales of Brave Ulysses," and "Swlabr")

Let's get this straight up front: The Weather Girls' classic disco song "It's Raining Men" is not included in the "Magic Mike" soundtrack (maybe in the film?), but there is a cover by modern R&B singer Countre Black, so at least that's something. A coming of age dramedy based on the real-life experiences of actor Channing Tatum, "Magic Mike" centers on an experienced stripper (Tatum) who takes a younger performer called The Kid (Alex Pettyfer) under his wing and schools him in the arts of partying, picking up women, and making easy money.
Featured on the soundtrack are Foreigner ("Feels Like The First Time"), Win Win's "Victim" (featuring Blaqstarr) which can be heard in the trailer, and co-star Matthew McConaughey, who evidently sings something called "Ladies of Tampa." That'll likely be worth the price of admission alone. Tatum told MTV earlier in the year that his character dances...

In 1987, the iconic filmmaker John Waters was sent by Playboy magazine to interview his all-time hero – Little Richard. It was a surreal, almost religious experience for John who had been a lifelong fan of the godfather of rock'n'roll. So why did it almost end in a fistfight?
Little Richard scared my grandmother in 1957. I was 11 years old, on the way to her house for dinner with my parents, and had just shoplifted a record in the five-and-dime. Mom and Dad hadn't even noticed. Easy pickings – the 45rpm of "Lucille" on the Specialty label. My favourite tune. I felt happily defiant in the back seat of the car with the sharp edge of the single jabbing my stomach beneath the sweater. Once inside Mama's (as we called Stella Whitaker, my mother's mother), I made a beeline to her out-of-date hi-fi and let it roll. "Lu-cille! You won't do your sister's will!

The Alamo Guide
for January 21st, 2010

We’ve got a whole buncha goodies coming up this week! First of all, A Town Called Panic finally opens this Friday, and we’ve been waiting for the day every since we saw it at Fantastic Fest. It’s a great time so def check it out if you can. Also, if you’ve been following this whole Leno vs. Conan debacle, you may be interested to know that we’re showing the Final Episode Of The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien. We’re definitely Team Coco. Our Valentine’S Day Feasts are selling strong,...
