When Adam Scott was cast as struggling actor and cater waiter Henry Pollard on the Starz comedy “Party Down” back in 2008, there was a bit of art imitating life. Up to that point in his career, Scott had appeared on countless shows and in supporting roles in major films, but hadn’t yet broken through to mainstream success and name recognition.
“I connected very directly with the character in a lot of ways,” Scott tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview of getting cast on the series. “I think for everyone in the cast, we all had this connection to the predicament all these characters were in – it’s part of what bonded us to the show and to each other so intensely back then: This show about this specific thing made us feel better about that specific thing. And it was really good and super funny, and so fun.

1. “The Fall” Season 3 (available October 29)
Why Should I Watch It? The official follow-up to “The X-Files” was released earlier this year, when the ill-fated Season 10 debuted and managed to, at best, somewhat resemble the groundbreaking original series. But its true successor — one worthy of the Fox drama’s elite status — came even sooner. Gillian Anderson picked up a new badge and started going after baddies once more when “The Fall” debuted on BBC2 in the summer of 2013. Since then, we’ve only gotten one more season. But it was an absolute doozy, making the wait for Season 3 utterly unbearable. If somehow you haven’t watched yet, get on it. This is peak Gillian Anderson, peak cop drama and peak TV — period.
Best Episode: I hate picking finales — it just seems so easy — but “What is in me Dark Illumine” marks the culmination of everything that came before. [Spoiler alert] Stella (Anderson) finally...

Rob Thomas, a rock star best known for fronting the band Matchbox Twenty, has apologized for making a joke on stage in Australia that many perceived as racist. “I did not intend to make a joke About race,” Thomas wrote on his Facebook Sunday. “I have seen people comment that after coming here for so long I should know that there is a connection between the indigenous peoples of Australia and a stereotype involving drinking. Embarrassingly, I truly didn’t. The joke I made was meant to be at no one’s expense but my own. I made a comment about drinking so much.

Executive producer Rob Thomas (not the guy from Matchbox Twenty) recently sat down with DC Comics’ official website to tease what’s to come.
The emergence of Max Rager executive Vaughn Du Clark, brilliantly played by Steven Weber, as this season’s big bad was the first thing that needed to be addressed. After all, his tainted product was partially responsible for the zombie plague.
“The world is getting bigger,” affirms Thomas. “There are more moving parts this season. Last year, Blaine was really the sole big bad.

Welcome to the tenth installment of our summer trip through "The Sopranos" season 1. When I revisited early seasons of "The Wire," as well as the whole run of "Deadwood," I did separate versions of each review for newcomers and veterans, but over time realized that the newcomers weren't commenting much, if at all, and that it therefore made sense to simply do one review. Any significant spoilers for episodes beyond the one being reviewed will be contained in a separate section at the end of the review; so long as you avoid that, and the comments, you should be fine. Thoughts on the tenth episode, “A Hit Is a Hit," coming up just as soon I've recorded in Denmark... Welcome to another "American Idol" night with a confusing theme. Per Fox, "the finalists will perform two songs – one connected to the judges’ hometowns, and the other a song that defines their 'soul.'" So the first theme means anything from or related to anything related to New York, New Orleans or Whangarei, New Zealand? Or are we pretending still that Keith Urban's hometown is Nashville? And the second theme means... Absolutely anything, right? Fair enough, I guess... Let's get to blogging! 8:00 p.m. The "American Idol" Top 5 singers finished last week's show and immediately they were whisked off to Nashville in Scott Borchetta's private jet. The "Idol" finalists got to visit Borchetta's studio and then they even found a part of Nashville were civilians recognized them! 8:03 p.m. Jennifer Lopez Fashin Show Time! Before VH1′s I Love the 2000s special began on June 17, I polled my roommates (whom I forced to watch with me) about their favorite pop culture moments from the year 2000. For about three minutes, everyone was stumped—what’s actually from the year 2000, instead of just under the umbrella term “the 2000s”? It turns out that remembering specific years is a lot harder than you think.
That’s why there’s a saving grace to VH1′s nostalgia-bait series, a 10-part anthology spread out over five days this week. It’s hugely entertaining to hear no-name comedians praise specific...

Two more newly picked up broadcast series are undergoing recasting. NBC comedy Bad Judge is recasting two roles, played in the pilot by Mather Zickel and Arden Myrin, while the CW drama iZombie will be replacing Alexandra Krosney. Related: Georgia King & Sarah Baker Exit ‘The Odd Couple’ The two characters on Bad Judge are expected to undergo reworking. The project just-enlisted Liz Brixius as showrunner. Written by Chad Kultgen, Bad Judge, from Universal TV and Gary Sanchez, stars Kate Walsh as wild child Rebecca Wright, who knows how to have a good time but she also happens to be one of L.A.’s toughest and most respected criminal court judges. Zickel played Gary, a psychiatrist who has an on-again, off-again relationship with Rebecca, often is called into her courtroom as an expert witness — and often winds up necking furiously with her in chambers. Myrin played Jenny, Rebecca’s best...

It doesn’t seem possible that it was around 30 years ago that A Flock of Seagulls ran so far away or Modern English melted with us, but it was. The story behind those acts, their biggest hits, and dozens of other New Wave acts are captured in all their ‘80s bad hairdo-ed, brightly colored-glory in “Mad World: An Oral History of New Wave Artists And Songs That Defined The 1980s.” Written by Lori Majewski and Jonathan Bernstein, with a forward by Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes and an afterward by Moby, the book examines the New Wave era through the filter of 36 songs associated with the time, such as Gary Numan’s “Cars,” Duran Duran’s “Girls On Film” and The Smiths’ “How Soon Is Now.” Each chapter deals with one act and, while not limited to the group’s biggest hit, explores the story behind that tune and the...

Daniels, repped by Elizabeth Wierderseim at Gersh and Hamilton Hodell in the UK, will star as the volatile and brilliant artistic director Paul Grayson. Breathe in, y’all. This is the real American Idol with its 70-second performances and glib-ass judge comments. (I’m already starting to grit my teeth whenever Harry brings up “intonation” in a condescending way.) The theme of this live episode’s performances was, essentially, “Be yourself!” So as you can imagine, there were tons of disasters. Being yourself + being interesting = apparently difficult. Let’s rank ‘em.
13. Kristen O’Connor, Kelly Clarkson’s “Beautiful Disaster”
Here’s my impression of Kristen O’Connor and her brilliant Moneyball-style strategizing: “I need to prove my worth since I’m a wild card. My strategy is to choose Kelly Clarkson‘s most forgettable song. See you in the finals!” Billy Beane in the hooooouse. Weirder yet, she somehow intended the song — which is very much addressed from a woman to a man — to be about herself? She’s the beautiful disaster? Or this competition is?...

American Idol presented the top 13 singers on Wednesday with the theme of “This is Me.” Although the performances in front of the live audience still proved a little rough, a few of the Idol hopefuls looked poised to make it into the Top 10.
First up on Wednesday was country crooner Dexter Roberts, who picked Chris Young’s “Aw Naw” to sing. Though Roberts gave a confident, solid performance, the judges wanted more from him. If he wants to last in the competition, he’s going to have to put his own spin on the songs he chooses and loosen up a bit on stage.
Energetic teen Malaya Watson followed Roberts with “Run Away Baby” by Bruno Mars. There’s no doubt that Watson is at ease in front of a crowd, but her vocal control needs some work. Basically, the judges want her to focus on her intonation as much...

The exciting shows are finally here, "American Idol" fans. It's the Top 13 finalists, with a theme of "This Is Me." Could you vague that up for us, "Idol"? That is akin to my all-time favorite theme, the Season 6 episode that was like "Songs Gwen Stefani Has Heard Of (Maybe)."
Just as an Fyi, we're not going to recap all the video package shenanigans. Let's get down to business with the performances.
1. Dexter Roberts, "Aw Naw," Chris Young
Terrible song choice. This is a song trying to so hard to be a dirt-kickin' country rock number, but Dexter does not have the swagger to pull that off yet. He's just standing there. His voice isn't bad, but there are a few bum notes and the entire performance lacks energy. He'll stick around, I'm fairly sure, but he's going to have to step that up.
If this is what defines who he is,...
