- Outfielder with the the New York Giants (1946-1953 & 1957[end]), Milwaukee Braves (1954-1957[start]), Chicago Cubs (1958-1959), Boston Red Sox (1960[start]), and Baltimore Orioles (1960[end--3 games]).
- Hit the famous "Shot Heard 'Round The World" - the ninth inning three-run home run in the Polo Grounds' left field bleachers which allowed the New York Giants to rally and defeat the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1951 National League playoff series.
- Was selected to the National League All-Star team three times (1948, 1949 and 1952).
- Made major league debut on 9 September 1946.
- In 1952 led the National League in triples with 14.
