In celebration of its 100th anniversary, the American Society of Cinematographers has released a list of the 100 best shot films of the 20th century.
This list was released to "showcase the best of cinematography as selected by professional cinematographers.” Here's how the list was put together:
The process of cultivating the 100 films began with Asc members each submitting 10 to 25 titles that were personally inspirational or perhaps changed the way they approached their craft. “I asked them — as cinematographers, members of the Asc, artists, filmmakers and people who love film and whose lives were shaped by films — to list the films that were most influential,” Fierberg explains. A master list was then complied, and members voted on what they considered to be the most essential 100 titles.
Here's a little sizzle reel that was cut together showcasing some of the films on the list:

Frank Tidy, the veteran British cinematographer who shot Ridley Scott's The Duellists and five films for director Andrew Davis, has died. He was 84.
Tidy died Friday at a nursing home in Kent, England, after a battle with dementia, his son Patrick told The Hollywood Reporter.
Tidy served as Scott’s cinematographer on hundreds of commercials for Rsa, the director's U.K. production company with his brother Tony Scott, starting in the 1960s. Tidy's first feature credit came on the war drama The Duellists (1977), which starred Keith Carradine, Harvey Keitel and Albert Finney.

The Duellists Blu-ray I first saw Ridley Scott's The Duellists last April and I enjoyed it enough to write up a three-page feature. What stood out most was the cinematography from Frank Tidy and the DVD came with a fantastic audio commentary with Scott and a "Duelling Directors" featurette with Scott discussing the film with Kevin Reynolds (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves). This new Blu-ray comes with both of those features as well as a new interview with star Keith Carradine. Visually, the Blu-ray is a definite upgrade from the DVD and this is one title I certainly recommend you consider. You can get a lot more on the story and my thoughts on the film in my three-page feature right here, but there are some spoilers so be warned.
Seven Psychopaths I found this movie to be more about telling jokes than telling a story. As a result,...

I watched Ridley Scott's debut feature The Duellists for the first time earlier this year and it resulted in me writing a three-page exploration of the film based on Scott's fantastic commentary on the DVD. In the piece I also featured several of the amazing shots captured by cinematographer Frank Tidy. On January 29, 2013, Shout Factory will re-release the film on Blu-ray with the previous Ridley Scott audio commentary included and a featurette with Scott and director Kevin Reynolds included along with a brand new interview with co-star Keith Carradine. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there has been any remastering done so I'm not sure how much of an upgrade we'll be looking at from a visual and audio perspective, but I suspect even without remastering there will be a significant improvement. If you're unfamiliar with the film I urge you to read my write-up on it. It does contain...
