The dusty and evil 18-wheeler of Duel (1971) cast a large and ominous shadow across the TV landscape; some kid named Spielberg showed that the medium could come across as cinematic with even the simplest of stories: truck chases guy in car. Six years later the Valerie Harper vehicle Night Terror (1977) pulled up to a similar station; and while it’s no Duel, it is an effective thriller that manages to reach its destination before running out of gas.
Originally broadcast on February 7th, Night Terror was part of the NBC Monday Night at the Movies, and was roundly trounced by The ABC Monday Night Movie (and you can forget about The Sonny and Cher Show on CBS); no matter, those who stuck by the Peacock were treated to a suspense-filled show with Harper put through the wringer.

This quirky family comedy conceived as an antidote to blaxploitation pictures was adapted from a play that claims no goal beyond feel-good entertainment — and a little preaching about black solidarity. Broad humor, simple characters and thin dramatic conflicts can’t blur the fact that this comedy has its heart in the right place. A game group of talented actors assures us that we’re gonna be glorified, unified and filled-with-pride!

It’s the one saga of the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral that puts Western legend into proper perspective as to the nature of money, power and the law: Edward Anhalt’s vision is of a gangland turf war with sagebrush and whiskey bottles. James Garner is a humorless Wyatt Earp, matched by Jason Robards’ excellent Doc Holliday. It’s one of John Sturges’ best movies.

The Enforcer
Written by Martin Rackin
Directed by Bretaigne Windust (and Raoul Walsh, uncredited)
U.S.A., 1951
Assistant district attorney Martin Ferguson (Humphrey Boggart) has worked tirelessly to see the day when notorious gang mastermind Albert Mendoza (Everett Sloane) is convicted for his most dastardly crimes and sentenced to rue his errors for a hellishly long time behind bars. That career defining moment is but hours away when key protected witness and former associate of Mendoza’s, Joseph Rico (Ted de Corsia), is brought to the police station to spend the night. Events quickly spiral out of control, leading to Rico’s unceremonious demise right under the police noses, prompting Ferguson and police captain Nelson (Roy Roberts) to make haste and study the many archival documents relating to the events and charges pressed against Mendoza in the hopes of finding further damning evidence…

Latest McQueen directorial effort gets a North American release date Twelve Years a Slave, Steve McQueen's drama based on real-life events, will open in North America on December 27, 2013, Fox Searchlight Pictures has announced. (Pictured above: Chiwetel Ejiofor, this year's Best Actress Oscar nominee Quvenzhané Wallis, and Kelsey Scott in TYaS. Please scroll down to check out the film's late-year competition.) Based on the autobiography of a man forced into slavery in the mid-19th century, Solomon Northup, Twelve Years follows the story free man Northup, kidnapped in Washington in 1841, only to be sold as a slave at a Louisiana cotton plantation where he was kept for twelve years.
