In the world of television, a “pilot” episode is the one chance you have to make or break your show getting to air. If it doesn’t make the cut, it’s consigned to the film vault of history, never to be seen. It’s extremely unheard of for a franchise to get two pilots. Star Trek: The Original Series being one of those rare second chances.
Bafflingly it’s been assumed for years that Mighty Morphin Power Rangers had three pilots. As Tony Oliver, co-writer and developer of the Power Rangers pilot, first revealed at Power Morphicon in 2007, “the pilot episode, which turned into the first episode [“Day of the Dumpster”], they actually did three times.”
That means they shot three separate pilot episodes, right? Well, yes, but also no. It’s very complicated so we did the biggest deep dive research on the Power Rangers pilot ever. What we uncovered changes everything...

"Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always" is the anniversary special "Power Rangers" fans have been dreaming about for years. While we've had many special episodes throughout the decades, including massive crossover battles involving most Red Rangers (of the time), or different Rangers teams fighting together, this is the first time the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers team has come back, and for a special that is specifically about them. That is, the franchise's first iteration, before it started adapting a different "Super Sentai" show with an entirely different cast, team, and theme song every season.
"Once & Always" pays homage to fallen Rangers, with a lovely and rather emotional tribute to Jason David Frank and Thuy Trang. Trang's character Trini, in particular, is central to the story of the special, with the death of Trini forever impacting the team, and inspiring her daughter Minh to pick up the mantle of the Yellow Ranger.

"Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always" is everything fans could have hoped for in a celebration of 30 years of "Power Rangers." This is a special that is full of fanservice, Easter eggs from even the deepest of deep cuts from across "Power Rangers" lore, and all sorts of cheesy jokes and cool martial arts moves — including Hip-Hop kido.
"Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always" takes place after the death of one of the Rangers, with the rest mourning a loss of one of their own as Rita Repulsa returns in a new robot body to wreak chaos across the globe. Meanwhile, a new Ranger rises to take the mantle of the old generation, because Power Rangers are forever.
This is a special full of cool moments and loving homages to the franchise, including a rather emotional coda that pays tribute to two fallen rangers, Jason David Frank and Thuy Trang.

This post contains spoilers for "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always."
It should come as no surprise that "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always" is completely filled with nostalgia. Unlike most other anniversary specials for the beloved tokusatsu franchise, "Once & Always" does not feature several iterations of Power Rangers meeting, like "Forever Red" or "Once a Ranger." Instead, this is entirely focused on the first series in the franchise, the multi-season "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" and its two generations of Rangers.
The special focuses on the return of Rita Repulsa, who has got herself a new robot body and brings tragedy to the Rangers. When Repulsa's armies start attacking Rangers around the world, new heroes will rise and the Power Rangers will see their legacy and their abilities tested. "Once & Always" sees the return of Zack Taylor (Walter Jones) and Billy Cranston (David Yost) from the first team, as...

This Power Rangers: Once and Always review contains spoilers.
Power Rangers: Once and Always, with a brisk hour-long runtime, does the impossible for a nostalgia focused special. It isn’t concerned with playing solely to cheap memories and easy jokes for casual fans, and isn’t obsessed with deep fan lore, either. Its primary focus is instead on just being the next entry in these characters’ lives. It’s doing something new and not just playing the hits.
The special most closely follows Blue Ranger Billy (David Yost) and Black Ranger Zack (Walter Emanuel Jones). We check in on their lives and see them in new situations. After the death of Yellow Ranger Trini, Zack takes on guardianship of her daughter, Minh (Charlie Kersh). It’s a wonderful new side of Zack that still highlights the character’s familiar warmth and charm. His interactions with Minh are the best part of the special,...

Let's get something out of the way first. "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always" is not where you want to start as a newcomer to the "Power Rangers" franchise. It is also not a wildly different reimagining of the '90s juggernaut — so don't expect a gritty reboot like the Joseph Kahn and Adi Shankar short film. Instead, what this offers is a nostalgia-filled special that is not particularly different from the many, many, many other anniversary crossover specials the franchise has done over the years.
What does make "Once & Always" different and notable is that it is entirely focused on the original "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" iteration rather than trying to tie in the past with the future. And even if this is still as cheesy as the original '90s show, it does have some edge to it that makes it stand out — plus a loving tribute to fallen Rangers.

Power Rangers has been running nonstop for 30 years. Since its debut in 1993 on Fox Kids, the superhero series has grown and changed, introducing team after team of Rangers and creating a legacy that’s tough to match in pop culture. The franchise will be celebrating its big 30th anniversary in style with a Netflix special which will take things back to the beginning.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always is bringing back a large chunk of the original Mighty Morphin Rangers and will give us a look at where they’ve ended up after all this time. We have no doubt this special will be filled with answers to questions fans have had for a long time along with callbacks and Easter eggs galore. Amy Jo Johnson is shutting down rumors about the reason she opted not to take part in the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers reunion movie for Netflix.
“Please stop saying I didn’t do reunion because of money Simply not true,” the former Pink Ranger tweeted.
Johnson continued, “Maybe I just didn’t want to wear spandex in my 50s or couldn’t go to [New Zealand] for a month. Or none of ur beeswax. [Jason David Frank] & I both chose not to for our own reasons. They filmed before he passed.”
The Felicity alum added that she was “excited to see [her] pals” Davis Yost and Walter Jones “rock it” in the movie playing the Blue and Black Ranger, respectively.

The original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers return for the 30th anniversary of the American series on Netflix. While favorites like David Yost (Blue Ranger) and Walter Emmanuel Jones (Black Ranger) will return, so will the evilest villain. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once and Always will bring back the vile Rita Repulsa (Barbara Goodson), but her return is questionable based on how the character exited the franchise.

"Power Rangers" is one of the biggest franchises to come out of the '90s. Based on the Japanese franchise "Super Sentai," the "Power Rangers" series follows a group of teenagers chosen to fight evil with the help of super suits and giant robots that morph together to make an even bigger robot.
When it premiered, the series was the closest '90s kids got to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You got a team of superheroes fighting cartoonish villains by punching the hell out of them, with a more diverse team than even the current MCU has.
And just like the MCU, the "Power Rangers" franchise has an expansive universe with a couple of different timelines, and stories that go to space, and travel to different galaxies, yet they all somehow have the same technology as our timeline. The last Power Rangers film failed to resonate with audiences, but now the franchise will be getting another reboot with some significant changes. The lineup will be pretty different this time around and though no casting has been announced just yet, Paramount is reportedly interested in a black actress taking on the role of the Yellow Ranger.
Fans of the long-running franchise have seen the members of the team change several times, of course. Every new chapter calls for some fresh talent, and Paramount’s upcoming Power Rangers reboot will look to start over after the less than stellar 2017 film from Lionsgate.
For the upcoming reinvention, our sources – the same ones who said Jim Carrey’s Mask will cameo in Space Jam 2 and a new Scream movie is in the works, both of which are now confirmed – tell us that Paramount is reportedly eyeing a black actress to play the Yellow Ranger.

Paramount is pushing forward with a new Power Rangers reboot. As revealed by THR back in December, director Jonathan Entwistle is helming the movie, which will sport a unique Back to the Future-like spin on the franchise. Expect it to follow a bunch of modern-day Rangers being sent back into the past – the 1990s, to be exact – where they’ll attempt to return to their own time.
The chosen period setting obviously piqued fans’ interests as it suggested the film could crossover with the original Mighty Morphin TV series that ran from 1993-96. We Got This Covered’s own intel has already pointed to this, with our sources – the same ones that told us Paramount was working on a Transformers reboot and Disney was developing a Beauty and the Beast spinoff for Gaston, both of which we now know to be true – saying that Mmpr stars Jason David Frank...

The original Yellow Power Ranger was going to make a cameo before the new generation of Rangers took over.
"Passing of the Torch Part 2" was the end of an era for Power Rangers. Taking place in the series' fifth season, Power Rangers Turbo, it featured the biggest cast change yet. Previous seasons had only switched out one to three Rangers at time but now it was finally decided for a whole new team to be brought on. The final remaining member of the classic Mighty Morphin team, Tommy, left the series along with three other Rangers who had all been around for at least a season and a half.

As Power Rangers rides high at the box office, a look at what led to this point...
Lionsgate’s new Power Rangers film, out in cinemas now, is not a film which assumes any prior knowledge of the Power Rangers franchise. But that doesn’t stop it from containing a number of sly nods for long-term fans, and perhaps the slyest of these comes early in the movie, when Kimberly (Naomi Scott) is confronted in the school toilets by her frenemy Amanda. In a heated exchange, Amanda tells her:
“You shouldn’t have sent Tai that picture of me.”
Either this line is an extraordinary coincidence, or its middle words combine, Megazord-style, to form a tip of the hat towards Sentai - or rather, Super Sentai - the Japanese franchise from which the Power Rangers TV show has always taken the bulk (no pun intended) of its action footage.

I walked into this one preparing to roll my eyes at another politically correct "controversy." But this here...this one's actually pretty interesting.
So Lionsgate tweeted a poster of the Yellow Ranger for their upcoming cinematic reboot of Power Rangers. It depicts the character Trini, who'll be played by Becky G, standing on her Zord and the tweet carries the caption "Driver's Ed not required." This is meant to be cool and funny, right? She's a teenager, and while most teenagers have to worry about taking their road tests, Trini has been chosen to be a Power Ranger and will be operating a giant robot and she's just that damn good.
Turns out, that was a really crappy caption. Here's why:
In the original Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers TV series, Trini was played by Vietnamese actress Thuy Trang. Trang tragically died a couple of months short of her 28th birthday.

Saban Entertainment has debunked a rumor from earlier this week and confirmed that the upcoming "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" cinematic reboot will also use the same names as the original heroes from the popular 1990s TV series - Jason. Kimberly. Zack. Billy. Trini.
Those were the names of the most popular team of Power Rangers who were portrayed by Austin St. John, Thuy Trang, Walter Jones, David Yost, & Amy Jo Johnson in the classic series. The report earlier this week indicated the new set of Rangers would be brand new characters with different names, but the film's official Twitter account has debunked that.
Dacre Montgomery (Jason The Red Ranger), Naomi Scott (Kimberly The Pink Ranger), Ludi Lin (Zack The Black Ranger), Rj Cyler (Billy The Blue Ranger) and Becky Gomez (Trini The Yellow Ranger) will star as the new team, and the confirmation also seems to indicate the film will...

Jason. Kimberly. Zack. Billy. Trini. For anyone even remotely familiar with the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television series, those five names will certainly ring a bell as those were the names of the most popular team of Power Rangers, the original "teenagers with attitudes," who were portrayed by Austin St. John, Thuy Trang, Walter Jones, David Yost, & Amy Jo Johnson. Throughout its many iterations, no subsequent series has ever managed to recapture the mass hysteria caused by the original '90s series and likely never will. It was long-rumored that Lionsgate's upcoming Power Rangers film reboot would also utilize those same names, however, ever since a recent report suggested the new set of Rangers would be brand new characters with completely different names, there's been quite a bit of confusion amongst fans and critics alike... well, up until now, that is! In a tweet sent yesterday afternoon, the official...

And, that makes five! Lionsgate & Saban Entertainment have just revealed who will be playing the fifth and presumably final Ranger in their upcoming Dean Israelite-directed Mighty Morphin Power Rangers reboot. Singer/songwriter Becky Gomez, better known as Becky G., has been cast as the Yellow Ranger. She'll likely utilize the "Saber-Toothed Tiger" dinozord powers in battle and will follow in the footsteps of the late Thuy Trang, who portrayed Trini Kwan on the original series. Gomez now joins an intriguing young cast, which features newcomers Dacre Montogomery (Betrand The Terrible) as the Red Ranger, Naomi Scott (The Martian) as the Pink Ranger, Ludi Lin (Marco Polo) as the Black Ranger, and Rj Cyler (Me And Earl And The Dying Girl) as the Blue Ranger. Rumors have circulated about their character names, but nothing has been set in stone just yet. A previous description of Gomez's character described her as such: Trini – 17 years old,...

With an early 2017 release date, it was only a matter of time before production kicked off on Lionsgate's upcoming Mighty Morphin Power Rangers reboot and now, thanks to YVRShoots, we know exactly when the film should officially commence. The site is reporting that the Dean Israelite-directed film, which has a script from X-Men: First Class & Thor scribes Ashley Miller and Zack Stenz, is expected to begin filming in Vancouver on January 18th and then wrap sometime around April 12th. The co-production between Lionsgate and Saban Entertainment will shoot under the working title "Shirt." The cast has yet-to-be finalized, but based on this latest report, it's probably a safe bet to assume that we'll start hearing about which five young actors will portray the iconic Rangers much sooner than later. The original '90s phenomenon starred Austin St. John, Thuy Trang, David Yost, Amy Jo Johnson, & Walter Jones as the...

Following its debut in 1993, Saban's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers quickly became a global phenomenon and after 22 years and numerous cast changes, the Rangers are still kicking - recently launching the twenty-second season of the long-running franchise. The original series starred Austin St. John, Thuy Trang, Walter Jones, Amy Jo Johnson, and David Yost as the five teenagers with attitudes that were chosen by Zordon and Alpha 5 to defend the Earth as the Power Rangers. Director Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) recently sat down with IGN to share a progress update on Lionsgate's upcoming Power Rangers reboot and while he obviously doesn't reveal anything about the film's plot or how it potentially ties into the original 1993 series, he does seem genuinely excited about getting started on the upcoming project. He describes an early draft of the script as "mature but still playful" and says the series is being updated in...

In 1993, Jason David Frank put on a green suit of spandex for the first time ... and now, over 20 years later, he's still proud to call himself one of the original "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers."But when toofab's Brian Particelli caught up with the Green (and later White) Ranger at Comic-Con in San Diego over the weekend, he made it clear not all of his former costars feel the same way."A lot of them now are obviously jumping on board, but I've been in there from the beginning," he says of convention appearances. "You see a lot of them now, a lot of people trying to jump up, it's almost like "Now I'm a Power Ranger,' but where were they like 5-6 years ago? I was doing this for a long time, supporting it and happy and proud of who I was for many years and still am."With...

David Yost (Blue Ranger/Billy Cranston)
David Yost landed the role of Blue Ranger Billy Cranston just three months after moving to California in 1993. In an intriguing piece of trivia, his character was named after Bryan Cranston, who at the time was doing voice work for Power Rangers producer Haim Saban.
Yost appeared in more than 200 episodes of Power Rangers, making him the only Ranger to appear in every episode of the original series.

It’s happened: the Power Rangers are heading back to the movies. And with luck, this time around Ivan Ooze won’t be anywhere within a twelve-mile radius of the theater.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers remains one of the last glorious bastions of my childhood. Somewhere deep in my bedroom back home, there’s probably at least one expensive action figure (I got the kind that morph, because I was spoiled) hiding away. Although the brand has survived dozens of tinkerings and reboots over the years (Jungle Fury? Really?), the original three-season series is unsullied — in my mind, at least.

Twenty years ago a bizarre, action-packed kids series called Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers premiered and garnered a fast, rabid following. For the 12-and-under set, the show served as a bridge between Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Saved By the Bell: Yes, there were cartoonish fight scenes and giant robot villains, but the show also exalted cool teenagers and made you feel like part of their Angel Grove-protecting posse. You could feel like a kid and a tolerable preteen among their ranks.
If you didn’t watch Power Rangers from at least ’93-’95, you were nothing to me. I got my Power Rangers action figures from the soon-to-be-bankrupted Venture department stores in the Midwest, and I became obsessed with dinosaurs because of the Power Rangers “roll call” (“Mastodon! Pterodactyl! Triceratops! Saber-toothed tiger! Tyrannosaurus!”), and not because of Jurassic Park. That’s what separates kids born in 1981 from kids born in 1986, Fyi.

It's morphin' time! Twenty years ago today, on August 28, 1993, "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers" premiered.
The kids show featured five teens (later six when the Green/White Ranger was added) being called upon to protect the world from Rita Repulsa. It originally starred Austin St. John as Jason Lee Scott, Thuy Trang as Trini Kwan, Amy Jo Johnson as Kimberly Hart, David Yost as Billy Cranston, Walter Emanuel Jones as Zack Taylor and Jason David Frank as Tommy Oliver.
When they transformed into the Power Rangers, the teens got a variety of weapons, including giant machines called Zords.
The Power Rangers fought a variety of monsters, some of them voiced by some of today's hottest TV stars, including "Breaking Bad" leading man Bryan Cranston. His last name was also used to name the Blue Ranger.

Two types of people might take interest in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Power Rangers complete series boxed sets: the diehard fans and those nostalgic for a piece of childhood. In this scenario, one of the parties will likely find huge disappointment waiting for them, while the other will simply be taking advantage of a spiffy consolidated set to streamline their collection. Can you guess which is which? Anyone who grew up with the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and never checked in with the series after its run in American primetime might do well to not look back, because the memories they have of Austin St. John, Walter Emanuel Jones, David Yost, Thuy Trang, Amy Jo Johnson, and Jason David Frank are best left as such. The series only achieved that same quality once again in the series (in Power Rangers in Space) and beyond that you have an...
