In the middle of August this year, three legends of the music industry died within 72 hours of each other: founder of A&m Records Jerry Moss; music lawyer Abe Somer; and my father, the “Black Godfather” himself, Clarence Avant. These three men helped define the recording industry of the past six decades, and what’s more, they were inseparable best friends.
Somer, Moss, and Avant met in New York City in the early 1960s, and in the six decades since, never left one another’s side, never once let their “soul contract” expire.

Jerry Moss, co-founder of A&m Records, has died. He was 88.
According to Variety, the record exec — who along with his business partner, Herb Alpert, turned A&m into one of America’s leading independent record labels — died Wednesday at his home in Bel Air.
“They truly don’t make them like him anymore and we will miss conversations with him about everything under the sun. The twinkle in his eyes as he approached every moment ready for the next adventure,” his family said in a statement to the Associated Press.
Dionne Warwick, who wasn’t an A&m artist, but had been close to Moss ever since he helped promote her music in the early 1960s also released a statement, calling him one of the “kindest gentlemen” and her “dear friend.”

It’s been 15 years since Stephen Colbert debuted his Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor, Americone Dream. To celebrate the milestone, the late-night host tapped singers Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban to perform an original song in honor of the sweet treat.
“Before you came along, life was such a rocky road,” Groban croons in the clip, filmed in the style of a cheesy romantic music video. “Scoops of smiles and scoops of tears/Your sweet and chunky mixture made my heart explode/A dream I’ve had for 15 years.

Jerry Moss, the co-founder of A&m Records, doesn’t like to dwell on regrets and missed opportunities, but that doesn’t mean that there haven’t been promising things that have slipped through his fingers. “I think we had the opportunity to sign Neil Diamond and we couldn’t afford it at the time, but to see Neil flourish the way he has is very heartwarming,” he says during our recent webchat (watch the video interview above). He does enjoy looking back on some of the great music the label produced and singles out albums by Sting, Peter Frampton and Joe Cocker as being his personal favorites that A&m put out.

So, travel venues are finally opening up just in time to escape those sweltering Summer temps. Someplace with a beach sounds ideal, though you may want to get some sand between your toes virtually while waiting for the world to get a tad more stable. Last week Israel was our getaway in Sublet. This weekend we’re headed to sunny Italy for a “va-cay” put together by some incredible travel agents (yup there are some left) out of Emeryville, CA. Yes, those titanic talents at Pixar are whisking us away to the Italian Riviera for a magical adventure. But how does it stack up against their excursions to Ireland (Brave), France (Ratatouille), and Mexico (Coco)? Well, to find out you’ll be introduced to a young lad. To borrow from the Nat King Cole classic “Nature Boy” (rather than the obvious Suzanne Vega ode to a second-floor dweller), “There was a boy.

Black Pumas needed one more song. At a festival in Austin a few years ago, the then-new soul-rock band had plowed through every number in its repertoire and had been called back for an encore. Thirty years have passed since the release of "Pretty in Pink" (on February 28, 1986), and yet we're still bewildered by the teen romance's climax.
Maybe we need to think of the John Hughes-scripted film as Gen X's own "Casablanca." The ending makes more sense if you think of Duckie (Jon Cryer) as Humphrey Bogart, letting the woman he loves (Molly Ringwald's Andie) go off with the dull-but-decent guy (Andrew McCarthy's Blane) because he's finally admitted to himself that he's a chivalrous romantic who values her happiness above his own. Yeah, it's a stretch, but it's just one of many interpretations to spin out of this Hughes classic.

Jon Batiste gets off the elevator and doesn't say a word to the percussionists already tapping out rhythms for a rooftop soundcheck at New York's NoMad Hotel — he just plops down at the white Steinway and joins in. Anyone ever put Suzanne Vega and Britney Spears together? Not until this very moment, when a leaked track from Giorgio Moroder's upcoming album featured Spears doing a cover of the '90s classic. How does it sound? Well, both offensively blasphemous and undeniably catchy: And if you're wondering if Britney Spears has ever been to a diner before, the answer is yes, duh, she used to work at one: ...

This July 5th marks the 25th anniversary of the "Seinfeld" series premiere. The sitcom is considered one of the best shows of all time and its contribution to comedy, pop culture, and the TV landscape as a whole since its inaugural episode is pretty much unparalleled over the past few decades.
We all remember phrases like "yada, yada, yada," might recall Jerry was a Superman fan, and know that the show was filmed in La and not New York City, where it took place. But there are some little-known tidbits even the biggest fans of the series might not be aware of.
Here are 25 facts you should know about "Seinfeld":
1. "Seinfeld" wasn't part of NBC's 1989 fall lineup. The show got a summer premiere date -- July 5, 1989.
2. It was originally titled "The Seinfeld Chronicles," but got "the old switcheroo" because ABC was already planning a series called "The Marshall Chronicles.

Welcome to a special edition of Comic Execution. As you may have read in the preface of last week’s column, I planned to spend this week’s column discussing, in depth, not just the latest issue but the entire run of Larime Taylor’s A Voice In The Dark. But, on the off chance there are some complaints about your weekly dose being subverted for such a malevolent purpose, let me reassure you that I had already checked to see what would be on the shelves this week before I planned this and, as luck would have it, there’s no ongoing series or debuts to write about anyway.
So why, you might ask, A Voice In The Dark? The reasons are numerous but Larime Taylor’s interactions with me on Twitter barely factor into it. No, what spurred my desire to write so lengthily on the series is...

The Grammys are on Sunday, so let’s investigate its most bizarre category: Best New Artist. Both Christopher Cross and Esparanza Spalding have one. That’s real. And that’s why we’re counting down the ten best winners and the five worst losers. Because maybe we’ll learn something! That’s what I’ll go with.
10. Rickie Lee Jones
Rickie Lee may not have had as gigantic a Billboard career following her Best New Artist win as some of the other stars here, but her debut album is such an assured, unpretentiously poetic, rich listening experience. “Chuck E.’s in Love” and “Young Blood” are whimsical and catchy while “Night Train” and “The Last Chance Texaco” are crackling, despairing portraits. She was also so rad, and that made her bohemian folksiness so much fresher than you’d expect.

Seinfeld fans rejoice! On Jan. 13, 2014, the popular sitcom's stars Jerry Seinfeld and Jason Alexander were spotted outside of Tom's Restaurant on the Upper West Side in New York City. The diner's exterior was used for the gang's favorite coffee shop, where they often met to discuss the day's events. The hot spot also inspired the popular 1981 Suzanne Vega song "Tom's Diner." Seinfeld, 59, and Alexander, 54, were captured entering the restaurant by Brooklyn, N.Y. resident Ali Phil. The picture-taking fan said the duo was filming at [...]...

It's alway fun to revisit Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction! The movie never seems to get old. I know this is old, but I hadn't watched it until recently, and there are a few interesting little bits of info tucked away in it that are pretty cool. For example John Travolta's Vincent Vega reveals that he's actually the cousin of singer Suzanne Vega. Tarantino not only shows off the deleted scenes he couldn't fit in the film, but he also excitedly explains and sets up each of the scenes. Thanks to The Playlist for bringing this to my attention. It really is quite entertaining. ...

What's the occasion for 24 minutes of deleted scenes from "Pulp Fiction" that you've probably already seen on DVD? Nothing really, but we're still in the early winter wasteland of moviegoing, and the new TV shows for 2014 aren't kicking off until this weekend (with both "Girls" and "True Detective" arriving), so here's another opportunity to revisit them or if you haven't watched them, diving right in. Presented by an animated Quentin Tarantino, this 24-minute reel (via Panic Dots) is pretty good fun for fans of the director, who takes the time not only to show off the material he couldn't fit in the picture, but explain and set up each scene. And there are lots of good nuggets in here including John Travolta's Vincent Vega revealing he's actually the cousin of singer Suzanne Vega. Ha. The world building of Tarantino apparently crosses over into real life too. Meanwhile, if you...

Here's the trailer for a new documentary called Tom's Restaurant, which focuses on the New York diner that became famous thanks to the hilarious TV series Seinfeld. The exterior of the restaurant was used to represent Monk's Cafe in the series. The doc will take us through the history of the diner, which has been owned and operated by the Greek-American family of Minas Zoulis since the 1940s.

It's most famous as the subject of Suzanne Vega's song "Tom's Diner" and as the exterior of the restaurant on "Seinfeld," but the history of New York City's Tom's Restaurant goes back much further than that. The eatery's storied past and continuing importance as a part of pop culture and a neighborhood staple is told in a new film, "Tom's Restaurant: A Documentary About Nothing Everything."
The trailer -- which is a mini documentary itself, clocking in at more than five minutes -- gives a brief synopsis of the restaurant's past and present. It was opened by a Greek family in the 1940s and is still owned by the same clan today.
In addition to serving as the exterior of Jerry, Elaine, Kramer, and George's favorite hangout spot on "Seinfeld" in the '90s (the interior scenes were shot on a soundstage), it also welcomed a slew of famous guests over the years,...

Since the 1940s, Minas Zoulis and his family have owned Tom’s Restaurant on the Upper West Side of New York City. The eatery has been the subject of numerous pop-culture homages, including Suzanne Vega's 1987 song "Tom's Diner,” but the corner spot was made famous thanks to Seinfeld. The series used the real-life exterior of Tom’s to represent "Monk's Café” in the series, but the interiors were shot on a soundstage. That’s why director Gian Franco Morini and his crew wanted to explore the real-deal diner and get to know the people inside. There, they met a slew of interesting characters — many people who have been coming there for decades. Bob Rose worked with David Lynch on the soundtrack for Twin Peaks, played...

There are no good arguments against the MP3, only sentimental ones in favor of alternatives: the warmth and crackle of vinyl, the possibility-rich canvas of the 7-inch sleeve, the character-building exercise of making a mix tape, that impulse-purchased CD with the eye-catching cover art that became the soundtrack of your sophomore year. For most Americans over the age of 30—for those who relate the size of an iPod to that of a cassette tape or think the idea of a laptop with no disc drive is insane—there is still something futuristic and unreal about MP3s and the limitless possibilities they suggest. But for those who have come of age in the past decade or so, there is no argument for the MP3. It doesn’t require one; it is just part of the natural landscape, like music itself.

Music can make an average ad great. So why, Robin Hicks asks, is music the last thing a creative thinks about when writing an ad?
My favourite TV ad of the year so far is the Let Yourself Go spot for Kangaroo Island.
When it didn’t win Mumbrella’s Ad of the Month for March (it came third) I felt aggrieved for the agency that made it. But less so a week later when it emerged that the agency had paid celebrities to tweet nice things about its work.
Let Yourself Go is a stunning spot with lots of pretty images. But it would probably have had a similar effect on me if I’d watched a blank screen for 60 seconds.
John Baker of Adelaide ad agency Kwp!, which made the ad, told me that the music (Rise by Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder) “is 50% of the communication”. For me,...

If there are any filmmakers who’ve worked their way through record stores as much as folks like Quentin Tarantino or even Wes Anderson, it would have to be John Hughes and Allan Moyle. So perhaps it’s no real surprise that on annual Record Store Day, where you can come out and support your local independent record stores on April 21st this year, there will be soundtrack reissues from both filmmakers.
First is Hughes’ “The Breakfast Club,” which will surely find many record enthusiasts doing some Judd Hirsch-style fist pumping as they pick up their all-white 12-inch vinyl pressing of the album. It’s hard to capture an entire mood of a film with a single soundtrack, especially when that film lingers on a dreary Saturday spent in detention with a few high school students looking to find themselves like in “The Breakfast Club,” but between the seminal...

Tuesday was already the traditional album release day in the U.S. by March 31, 1987. Music fans' choices among the new releases that day included Close to the Bone by the Thompson Twins, The Circus by Erasure, and the two albums I refer to in the headline: Prince's Sign o' the Times and Suzanne Vega's Solitude Standing. Both of the latter artists had proven their talent by that point, and these releases were eagerly anticipated.
Sign o' the Times (Warner Bros.) was a double LP (barely under 80 minutes), always a major statement (discounting live doubles). It is to Prince what There's a Riot Goin' On was to Sly & the Family Stone: an album of schizophrenic swings between dire warnings of social disaster, personal darkness and confusion, and seemingly desperate attempts to stave it all off by often-lascivious partying -- and also an artistic peak.

Carson McCullers is a literary icon, an author whose work was important for many reasons, but largely because she was a great storyteller about the South. Her novels, short stories and plays have inspired many of today's contemporary writers, and she was also the inspiration for a play about her that Suzanne Vega put on in New York this past year.
Now she'll be immortalized on screen by Jena Malone in the biopic Lonely Hunter.
